Chance the Rapper has joined the league of emcees decrying director Spike Lee for his forthcoming film, Chi-Raq.
“Let me be the one from Chicago to personally tell you we not supporting this film out here,” Chance the Rapper says in a series of Twitter posts published today (December 4). “That shit get ZERO love out here. Shit is goofy and it’s a bunch of ppl from NOT around here telling u to support that shit. The people that made that shit didn’t do so to ‘Save Lives.’ It’s exploitive and problematic.”
At the movie’s premiere in New York on Tuesday (December 1), Lee said, “this film is about changing lives.”
The movie is based on the Greek play Lysistrata where women abstain from sex in order to stop local violence.
“The idea that women abstaining from sex would stop murders is offensive and a slap in the face to any mother that lost a child here,” Chance the Rapper adds to his criticism of the director. “You don’t do any work with the children of Chicago, You don’t live here, you’ve never watched someone die here. Don’t tell me to be calm.”
Rhymefest, Lil Bibby, Lil Durk and other Chicago rappers have also expressed displeasure with the way their hometown is being represented in the film.
Last month, Chance The Rapper was named a Chicagoan of the Year by Chicago Magazine.

Chance the rapper is my favorite artist right now, but I believe that he should go see it before jumping on this hate wagon. Spike Lee is a legend also a grown man and notable for having films that you think than just being entertained. Im from Chicago and I’ve seen the movie…Chance says “Also the idea that women abstaining from sex would stop murders is offensive and a slap in the face to any mother that lost a child here” but the movie is filled with REAL mothers that have lost children in these streets….the movie is not a “how to stop the violence” manual but it touches on strong points that if you are from the streets not just Chicago you will get the message….

This movie might break some type of movie record based on all the hype. Who cares what this movie is about. It’s a movie you don’t have to believe it. It’s never coo when an artist critiques another artist based on personal virtues. If you listen to Chance the Rapper’s music you may be offended. You may think he doesn’t know what real Chitown women are like. You may think he’s a crazy drug addict. You may think he doesn’t know what it’s like to see someone Die from Acid (Acid Rap). I have not seen Spike’s latest flick, though reading people’s criticisms and reviews I get the impression Spike indirectly addresses America’s expanding and shameful *National Epidemic of Childhood Abuse and Neglect*, *Poverty*, that for more than two generations has deprived untold numbers of American kids from experiencing and enjoying a fairly happy American kid childhood with *Safe Streets* to travel and play on.
*Child Abuse and Neglect* that is primarily responsible for populating our prisons with depressed, angry, frustrated, undisciplined, unpredictable, sometimes suicidal teens and adults full of resentment for irresponsibly being introduced to a life of hardships and struggles.
