Cassidy Discusses State of Hip Hop Before “Ether” Battle

Cassidy is set to face Dizaster in the “Ether” battle tomorrow (December 6). In advance of the battle, he spoke on the state of Hip Hop with Doggie Diamonds for ForbezDVD.

The Philadelphia rapper says that Hip Hop has strayed from its roots of going against the grain and instead is being defined by mainstream radio.

“I feel as though now because they’re pushing the music so much,” he says, “that crowd that’s not really Hip Hop feel as though that’s what’s winning and people wanna fit in with what they feel as though everybody else like. And that’s why people liking this bullshit music that you hear getting put out nowadays.”

The Philadelphia rapper goes on to say that this desire to fit in is why radio ratings are down and why BET’s 106 & Park is ending. He says that people who are genuinely interested in Hip Hop, which goes against the fit-in mindset, are turning toward the Internet.

“For the artist that’s really being creative and really got talent, they can benefit from that,” he says. “And that’s why radio ratings is declining because they don’t really want to hear that bullshit they playing.”

He also says that Hip Hop has become oversaturated and in social media, the art form has lost its authenticity as it has started to blend with comedy. The genre has lost its definition, Cassidy says.

“If it’s all mixed together,” he says, “then it’s hard to decide what is what. I think like for this new music and this new style that these niggas is doin, it need to be categorized in a different category than Rap and Hip Hop.”

The Fresh Coast/FilmOn “Ether” event is scheduled to be at the Belasco Theatre in Los Angeles. In the build-up for the event, as Lush One called it “the most important battle ever.”

Cassidy said he was getting a $250,000 paycheck for his participation, but Dizaster denied the claim. Gillie Da Kid predicted it will be an easy victory for Cassidy.

    1. Dizaster wins 2-1 in a close call. But it’ll be a moral victory fore everyone, as they’ll say how it was great for hip hop in general.

    2. Cassidy definitely be talkin sense. I respect rappers like Cassidy. Rappers that have a genuine love for the art form.I agree with him 100%,the wack bullshit that’s getting put out nowadays should be put in a different category. Cos people that don’t know any better be hearing that wack corny shit and be Thinkin its real hip hop.if u want to hear the dope shit u definitely have to search for it.

      1. Cassidy the Taylor smith of battle rap?share with us some of ur favourite classic hip hop albums, and some of ur favourite lyrical rappers. Let’s see if u REALLY KNOW HIP HOP.if u don’t REALLY know hip hop, then u can’t really speak on it. If you don’t really know hip hop = your opinion isn’t valid. It doesn’t count.Go try and get a career in comedy!!people that really know hip hop,can read comments and they can tell who REALLY KNOWS HIP HOP!!!So if u don’t really know hip hop,you can’t even “act” as if u do.People that really know hip hop can read comments and they can tell the casual hip hop listeners from the “real” hip hop heads.Cassidy’s definitely speaking pure sense!!!

      2. I agree with Cass, rap has become such a non-talent producer driven genre. You can have cats that can’t rap to save their mommas life getting on the mic and talking about nothing.Simple rhyme schemes, imitated cadence…just an overall mimic of someone else. Rap was based on originality, story line concepts and aggressiveness. Now it’s about drinks, weed and clubs on almost every song. Where is the originality? I know the topic of most songs before they even spit the 1st 4 bars. On the radio, they play the same 8-10 songs ALL DAMN DAY LONG like there are only 8 artist that exist! I’m glad 106 & park is done, they help perpetuate the madness, I wish these radio shows would leave the air too. Real hip hop heads want lyrics mixed with good music. Not good music mixed with whack azz lyrics. Oh, and also the production in some cases is suspect. These producers remake the same beats that the last producer made that was a heavy rotation song. Hip Hop is no longer hip hop, it should be called “Fraud Music”

      3. 4. also true what he said about social media. its hurt and helped hip hop culture. Hurt by making much of the interaction so fake and needlessly dramatic.
