“Black Panther” Cracks Top 5 For Biggest Opening Weekend

Marvel’s Black Panther has proven to be a juggernaut at the box office. The Ryan Coogler-directed film scored the fifth-best domestic opening weekend of all time, raking in over $201 million.

The staggering numbers added Black Panther to a Top 5 that includes Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Jurassic World and Marvel’s Avengers. The film has been a strong performer globally as well, debuting at $370.5 million and surpassing $400 million based on Monday’s domestic estimates, according to Deadline.

The film, which stars Chadwick Boseman as the titular character, also made waves on Sunday (February 18) by grossing $60.1 million. The figure was enough to make it the second-best Sunday gross of all time, narrowly trailing Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ $60.5 million on December 20, 2015.

Black Panther has not only been a huge earner at theaters but also received rave reviews. Critics and audiences alike have showered the film with praise. It currently has a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Disney, which owns Marvel, didn’t expect Black Panther to rival the widespread success of The Avengers. But Dave Hollis, Disney’s President of Theatrical Distribution, noted how the film’s predominantly Black cast was able to attract an underserved market.

“Our goal is to make movies that reflect the diversity of our world because those are the stories that resonate everywhere,” he told Deadline. “To have the ability to show other people’s experience is part of the beauty of movies, but it also allows for rich storytelling, and for the people whose experiences are up on the screen, especially if they have not been showcased a ton. The meaningful nature of being able to see yourself represented, those things really matter to everyone, but in this case it matters even more to communities of color. Representation matters and the times we’ve leaned into it, we’ve had massive results.”

    1. When I heard they were doing this movie I thought it would go down like Ant-Man, just an obligatory installment in the Avengers franchise of a C-list comic hero that not many people would go to see. Somewhere in the process they injected a bunch of identity politics into it so now all the black people act like they have to defend it as a great movie at all costs (it was good, but not the masterpiece they are making it out to be) because showing an unrealistically advanced African nation is woke or something. It annoys me, but I have to admit it was phenomenal marketing for a movie that, in normal circumstances, would be relatively unnoticed.

          1. Dude stop it…u angry for wat???….even you White ppl came frm black ppl…shit, white scientists kno this…stop doin this to yrself..jus be happy u wite and u stl got yr privilege and we nt….ease up dude

      1. So anything that isn’t about yet another white guy is ‘identity politics’? News flash: Most of the world is made up of people who are NOT white guys. The ignorance and the arrogance of white male privilege is astounding.

        1. There is no such thing as white privilege, there is only rich privilege. The idea that there is a one size fits all in terms of racial privilege is absurd, what privilege do trailer park white kids in meth towns of Arkansas benefit from that Michael Jordan’s kids don’t?

      2. Speaking from a comic fan its was good I personally love it but I’m bias for so many others reason than it was black but just to see if I over made it great in my mind I sent my 60 year old mother to see it with out me lol mind you she not into comics or super heroes at all and she gave me the cutest example she told me in her words it was great the colors in the movie the plot I love that tribe that kept saying no I think the legend of Tarzan was better hahaha I love my mom but in her mind nothing will be better than Tarzan….now back to black panther for me it’s great as a origin story for the panther comic because it opens the door so many story that I read growing up like storm from xmen marrying black panther… I see potential so that’s part of the excitement coming from a girl who seen even super hero story which to me they all have the same plot black panther was really good it gave just enough action just enough of a great plot maybe the ending scene was a little off for me but I still wasn’t disappointed…..and marvel 1st big. Screen black super hero they did him justice… The first iron man I saw 3times love it the first avenger movie couldn’t get enough of it first transformer movie saw 3times …….justice league I was so excited but I felt the rush the stories…….I remember when Christopher Reeves came out with Superman omg I thought it was the best movie ever …….lol but looking back 20 years there was some boring scenes ….so maybe looking forward 20 years I will come come back and say what? Black Panther wasn’t all that..lol but for Now in this moment it was all that a fresh look at a new super hero …Wakanda forever baby !!!

    2. The movie was meh! Not saying it was a dud like Justice League, the graphics were top notch. I just wasn’t feeling the plot and the climax.

    3. Ffs get off this movies dick hhdx lmao… how many articles can 1 hip hop site publish on a non hip hop movie. Oh yeah coz it’s got the almighty Donald Glover in it and Kendricks on the sound track. This movie was average at best.

      1. go over to AllHipHop they definitely breaking the record. Thought for a second I was on a Black Panther Site

        1. Hey dumb fuck just cause you want something doesnt mean you get it doesnt that shitty ass studio apartment that smells like piss teach you that yet broke bitch

        2. I’m sorry, I retract my earlier comment. I googled it and you’re right. It is in the top 5! I had too much cum in my eye from blowing so many dudes I couldn’t read the internet correctly. Please accept my apology

    4. Nice! People this movie is a good conversational piece for African Americans and Africans in Africa and abroad and that’s why I like it, and was pumped to see it, and just like any other fictional action movie it didn’t disappoint, but yeah, they could have done more, Solid 8/10 for me!

    5. The movie was decent but do yourself a favor and check out the Black Panther animated series that aired on BET in the late 2000s…. Peace on the Internets y’all!

    6. Easy to do when you got all the black celebrities making power PR moves and laying down for all the hood boogers to go see the movie. Reasonable people see thru this bullshit. It’s a comic book movie like all the others, the race of the character makes it a blockbuster. Like if he took off the suit and it was a white guy, nobody would want to see this shit. Don’t people get offended when you’re treated like the retarded kid on the field at a game. Like you’ve done something that is not special at all and has been done plenty of times (yes there have been black comic book movies before this)…but everybody overcompensates and praises you cuz they think you’re not capable of doing things without their help or some sort of “movement”. That would aggravate me, and I say this seriously no trolling…its offensive imo. Like seriously, does the black community really need a bunch of pandering to succeed?
