With his third studio album slated for release later this year, Detroit, Michigan rapper Big Sean spoke briefly on his first two albums during an interview with XXL magazine. The Motor City lyricist fessed up to releasing albums he says had their flaws, but also expressed optimism at the idea of one day releasing a perfect album.
Big Sean later declared that there isn’t “a lot of good rap music out there” and shared that it’s his responsibility to release good rap music.
“I feel like there are flaws on the first album [and] flaws on the second album,” Big Sean said. “I don’t know if I’ll ever drop an album that doesn’t have any flaws…I probably will drop a perfect album one day. I’m going to master that…There’s not a lot of good rap music out there. So I really feel like there’s big responsibility for me to make good rap music, because there are only a few people that make it. I’m a beast out here. I’m not going to front. When it comes to this rap shit, you really got to be on a high level to fuck with me.”
As part of his feature story in XXL’s Winter 2014 issue, the G.O.O.D. Music lyricist recalled meeting Kanye West at a Detroit radio studio as the rapper was promoting his Late Registration album. According to Big Sean, he was granted 16 bars by Ye, but ended up freestyling for 10 minutes.
“He didn’t have a lot of time, so he wasn’t trying to hear it at first. But he opened his ears and he opened his heart and listened,” the rapper said.
Although details remain scarce, Kanye will reportedly appear on Big Sean’s upcoming studio album.

He aint lying. The last hiphop album I bought was Nas Life is Good back in 2012. I’m only 26 and I hate all the new rappers my age, from J Cole, to Big Krit to Kendrick, even Big Sean himself, the shit is terrible. I’m hoping Nas or Kanye drop this year, to provide some balance.
Life is good is a great album but j cole and big krit, u don’t like them? Wow! They just dropped some pretty good albums but hey everybody got they on opinion. Like Kanye to me been losing me since 808 and heartbreaks. And I agree the game needs balance but yall looking in the wrong places, mainstream. You gotta go underground, satellite radio and the internet. Like good hip hop music is still out there but YOU have to find it. From Saigon, the lox, joey badass, action Bronson, skyzoo and others. And off course the industry is a big reason for the music of today. Its killing the artists creativity cause it got them focusing on the top 40, radio nonsense.
You’re an idiot and all those dudes are trash. Underground still live and kickin.
big Sean is right, unfortunately, he forgot to include the nonsensical music he releases as lambasts the genre generally
This nigga releasin trash ass music too. Only rappers dropping classics is Kendrick Ross Jay Kanye and Cole. All them other niggas releasing one hot track and filler.
Bawse!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Um, never heard of Joey Bada$$?
Please take Cole out the equation, and add Lupe.
This dude is concentrated garbage truck juice
Lol. oooh weeee that stinks.
I love making wack music for all my skinny jean fan
thanks yall
YOUR MUSIC INCLUDE LIL SEAN!
stay fuckin that malnourished J. Lo wannabe and keep your opinions to yourself. In 2014 there was at least 20 dope albums that never made it mainstream, and the year just begun and I’ve already found 3.
There us plenty of good hip hop out there, its just that cornballs like him don’t know anything about hip hop outside of the mainstream.
Couldn’t have said any better…. Co-sign!!
I double that motion clown!
big sean is a good rapper. he just chooses to follow mainstream content like drake. not a lot of rappers have the 3 qualification that made GOATS like PAC and biggie: Content, Flow and delivery.
All content is the same. Flows do not even compare to the 90’s compound syllable flows. AND delivery is too soft..
Not to mention all the dumb trap beats and Pop beats. SOUL is dead in hip hop. Kendrick is pretty good but in all honesty…there should be more lyricists. Ones who do not involve in social media in delivering their content. They should write it through a song which will last FOREVER
Underground is where it’s at all these mainstream niggas suck big Sean included. Last year was decent vets like mega, the Wu and mobb deep had good albums and new niggas like action, Joey, ransom and Freddie Gibbs got some shine. The battle scene is popular now and the bullshit is slowly fading away. Even though you’ll still have a few retarded kids clinging on to the garbage.
A few clinging? There is nothing but garbage music with simpleminded fans out at the moment. Anyone can make a trap song. You’ve just gotta have low self-worth.
Wrong, everyone in your lane fuckin blows. We got: Joey Bada$$, Action Bronson, Pharoahe Monch, Apathy, Ghostface, RA the Rugged Man, Your Old Droog, Crooked I, Royce, Blu, JMT / AOTP, iLL BiLL, Slaine, MF Doom, Freddie Gibbs, Reks, Chino XL, Roots, etc. etc.
the only ppl on your list that can put together a non snoozable album are…
JBA, AB, GHOST, ROYCE, BLU, DOOM, GIBBS, ROOTS
you can keep the others thats why mainstream cats dont fuck with you
Ironic. His music and his rapping is crap
