Big Boi‘s contributions to music with both OutKast and as a solo artist have put him in a rare stratosphere of fame, but it’s his care for the artists he’s mentored, like Janelle Monáe, that really stands out.
During a recent interview with The Bootleg Kev Podcast, Monáe chatted with the host about some of the life lessons she’s learned from her peers. Monáe noted that while Diddy helped her career flourish, none of it would be possible without Big Boi.
The singer recalled doing background vocal work with OutKast, as well as her time on his label, Purple Ribbon Records, and her appearance on the group’s Idlewild album.
“He was really, really promoting me,” she said, before then explaining the most significant lesson she learned from him. “He taught me the importance of staying with family.”
Monáe — whose new album The Age of Pleasure is out now — also gave praise to Prince and Diddy during the chat. As well as discussing who was the better party animal out the two. Check out the interview in full below.
In other related news, Big Boi has been tapped by Hulu for a new unscripted series titled Big RV Remix which is scheduled to premiere on July 21. The show will feature Big Boi and his business partner Janice Faison as hosts.
The pair owns Celebrity Trailers, a company that specializes in extravagant and luxurious do-overs for large vehicles. The upcoming series will follow the pair as they help their clients reimagine their transport devices.
“From trailers and campers to sprinters and school buses – if it has wheels, Big Boi and Janice are ready to make their clients’ vehicle renovation dreams come true,” the show’s official summary reads.
The show’s format is reminiscent of Pimp My Ride, which was hosted by another prominent figure in Hip Hop, Xzibit. With Big Boi now taking on the role of the rapper/host who brings lavish visions to fruition, the tradition carries on.
Though the Atlanta spitter has previously appeared on television shows such as Law & Order, Animals and Celebrity Family Feud, he has never hosted a series before.
