Benzino doesn’t have the best relationship with his daughter Coi Leray these days, but there was a time when he tried to be a good father to the rising rapper.

The former Almighty RSO rapper, media mogul, and sworn enemy of Eminem is set to appear as a guest on an upcoming episode of The G.O.A.T.s and Underdogs Podcast, hosted by fellow music industry executive Ray Daniels.

In a preview clip of the episode, Daniels and Benzino (real name Raymond Leon Scott) discuss the challenges of being a parent when one comes from the entertainment industry, where drugs and alcohol seem to freely flow.

Benzino explained that when his daughter wanted to smoke some weed one time, he had to make a judgment call in teaching her a lesson.

“She’s about 15, 16, essentially,” he begins the clip. “And she’s smoking — I’m like, damn, I don’t want her to smoke. So it’s like, man, I don’t wanna be the bad guy.”

Daniels’s co-host, Tamira Smith, jumped in with a question of her own. “What age did you start smokin’?” she asks.

“Thirteen,” Benzino replies, before Daniels interjects with: “But you want your kids to be better than you!”

“You’re right,” the former Source editor says. “It’s called necessary hypocrisy.”

The relationship between Benzino and Coi Leray — who is the only daughter of the Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta star — has been rocky for years.

Back in March 2021, Leray admitted that she was “ashamed” to be her father’s daughter, and made it clear in a series of now-deleted tweets.

“I been posting and supporting, so idk where all this bs is coming from. That line in her song is [cap] my name and rep is very important to me and nobody is gonna tarnish that for story line u dig? I still love u very much coileray but this gotta stop,” Benzino said to his daughter in a now-deleted Instagram post.

The former Love & Hip Hop Atlanta star was referring to his daughter’s song “No More Parties,” in which she sings: “My daddy let me down, but I promise you I won’t let up/ I wanna say fuck that man, but that shit won’t make me better.

In response to Benzino’s plea, Coi Leray fired off a series of now-deleted tweets roasting her father.

“And this is why I NEVER WANTED ANYBODY TO KNOW!!!” she wrote in a since-deleted tweet. “I’M EMBARRASSED TO BE YOUR DAUGHTER. I should have been a boy your right cause I would have knocked you the fuck out already. NUMB TO THE PAIN!! I’m hurting right now but it’s all good. Ima be the one to PUT US RIGHT BACK IN THAT MANSION.”

More recently, in May 2022, Benzino publicly shamed Coi Leray for defending his sworn enemy, Eminem, after Slim Shady was inducted into the Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame.

Shortly after Benzino’s tweets, the Trendsetter rapper fired back: “I’m about love, equality, respect and forgiveness. I have nothing against Eminem, 25 years of my life all I know is he a very talented artist and actor! (8 Mile was great) Let’s build bridges and get over them before you burn the bridge and burn with it.”

Her father replied: “As far as the lil [parrot emoji] who keeps talking about love and forgiveness. Well there’s this word called ‘loyalty’ and a commandment that says ‘Honor thy Mother and Father’ As far as burning bridges, there no bridge bigger than the one you burnt with your own blood.”
