Benny The Butcher has fired back at online “nerds” for doubting his upcoming album Everybody Can’t Go.

Back in 2022, the Griselda rapper boldy declared that he’d drop the Hip Hop album on Def Jam since DMX’s It’s Dark and Hell Is Hot in 1998.

The quote has continued to follow Benny, with some critics using it as ammo against him in the run-up to his new album, which is set to arrive later this month.

After an X (formerly Twitter) account posted a graphic of Benny’s comments along with the caption: “Those are some big shoes to fill,” the Buffalo, New York native responded: “When blogs post shit like this they be tryna get a reaction outta yall and yall take they bait cuz yall love to banter on this app.

“I was speaking on creating a missing feelin in the Def Jam building [guitar emoji] cant wait to drop my shit on you nerds who gonna hate either way THE [Butcher] COMIN.”

Out January 26, Everybody Can’t Go serves as Benny The Butcher’s first major label album. He signed to Def Jam back in late 2021 during Snoop Dogg‘s tenure as an executive at the storied label.

The project is produced entirely by frequent collaborators The Alchemist and Hit-Boy, and boasts features from Lil Wayne (“Big Dog”), Stove God Cooks (“One Foot In”) and more.

To clarify how bold Benny’s “best Hip Hop Def Jam album” claim was, Spotify’s Head of Urban Music Carl Chery tweeted at the time that his album would also surpass every Kanye West project from College Dropout to The Life of PabloJAY-Z’s The Black Album and The Blueprint, and Jeezy’s Thug Motivation 101 and The Recession, among other classics.

As for It’s Dark and Hell Is Hot, the album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with over a quarter of a million first-week sales, solidifying DMX as a bona fide star.

Seven months later, he released his sophomore LP Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood to even bigger first-week numbers, making him the first living rapper in history to top the albums chart twice in the same calendar year.

During a November appearance on the Rap Radar Podcast, Benny The Butcher shed more light on Everybody Can’t Go and explained the meaning behind the title.

“[It’s called] Everybody Can’t Go because they not cut like that,” he said. “They not made like that. And you can’t dance to every song, you know what I’m saying? […] Everything is not for everybody. With new levels come new devils, and I want more. I want bigger for myself.”

He continued: “When you make that first cut — when you clearly see, ‘these people are not for me, they don’t need to be here’ — so the people who made that, who got past that cut, they think they’re safe. And what I mean by level up, you know, is my way of thinking. And of course, my way of making music.”
