New Orleans, LA

Ab-Soul has seemingly teased that something big is going down during Kendrick Lamar‘s Super Bowl halftime show.

In a cryptic post on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday (January 29), the TDE rapper wrote: “LISTEN… I HAVE NEVER GOTTEN A FT FROM FREE,” referencing Kendrick’s longtime manager Dave Free.

“SMFH. I JUST SHED A TEAR. DEAD HOMIES. SUPER BOWL LIX. HISTORY!!! @pgLang x @TopDawgEnt.”

Many fans interpreted the post as a hint that Ab-Soul — and possibly also his Black Hippy brethren ScHoolboy Q and Jay Rock — would be making an appearance during Kendrick’s highly-anticipated performance on February 9.

One fan replied to his post, saying: “Black Hippy in the Super Bowl?”

Another excitedly asked: “Yooooooo… Does this mean what I think it means???”

“AB DASH SOUL IN THE SUPERDOME???” a third user commented, referencing the venue of Super Bowl LIX which takes place in New Orleans.

It wouldn’t be the first Black Hippy performance we’ve been treated to in the last year. The foursome reunited in June 2024 at Kendrick’s historic Pop Out: Ken & Friends concert in Inglewood following his rap battle victory over Drake.

Excitement for the Super Bowl halftime show has also been fueled by Kendrick’s former label boss, Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith.

The TDE founder shared a picture on Instagram earlier this week of him and Dave Free overseeing a rehearsal for the big performance, which is expected to be watched by over 100 million people worldwide.

The duo didn’t dish any details about what fans can expect from the show, although Top Dawg promised “it’s about to be a movie.”

One thing for certain is that Kendrick will be joined by special guest SZA for the halftime show, which will mark the first time a rapper has headlined the coveted gig by himself.

The announcement was made last week in a new trailer for the halftime show released by Apple Music.

In the clip, K. Dot makes a phone call on a football field and as he begins to say he’s been thinking about a guest performance, SZA appears from behind and dumps Gatorade on him.

It has also been rumored that Tyler, The Creator might pop out as a special guest during the show thanks to various clues in the aforementioned promo, including possible references to Tyler’s Chromakopia album and “Hey Now” remix.
