Aaron McGruder Announces The Boondocks Season Three

After a lengthy two-year break from the small screen, Aaron McGruder‘s animated series The Boondocks is finally preparing to return to Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim lineup for its third season. According to McGruder’s sparsely-updated Twitter account, a new season is in order. Other sources confirmed the comic strip-turned-contentious cartoon will air on Sunday, May 2 at 11:30 P.M. E.T.

The series received flack in its earlier episodes for its use of the N-word, the portrayal of women, and the deification of gangster rappers, drug dealers, and pimps. According to a press statement, the series will continue to provide satirical, and often-times controversial commentary on politics, media, social norms, and popular culture.

Actress Regina King will return to voice primary characters Huey and Riley Freeman, while John Witherspoon will also return as the voice of Granddad. In the past seasons, artists Snoop Dogg, Mos Def, Xzibit, Busta Rhymes, and Lil Wayne have all lent their voices to the show. While a few rappers have been featured on the show more than once, McGruder has not announced whether any artists will be featured in the upcoming season.

    1. Thats great! Its eff’ed up because you got Family Guy, which will make all kinds of racist jokes but everyone lets that rock. As soon as we have something to say about our own cultural its a problem.
And on another note if you watch any episode it always trying to bring awareness to the sterotypes of African American culture. Huey (as in Huey P. Newton, leader of the Black Panters????) is playing the role of the intelligent african american who is looking to enlighten his brother, Riley, who is the sterotypical nigga who is funny as hell. Great show..

      1. good point. i hadn’t looked at it that way. i cant wait for this show to come back. i also find it funny that many of my non-black and black friends find Family guy hilarious but are hesitant to watch the Boondocks which is a much more enlightening show and funnier show.

    3. Im really happy for you, and im gonna let you finish…but The Boondocks is the GREATEST show of ALL time…ALL TIME!

i can relate to EACH and EVERY episode (from R.Kelly supporters to laughing at DOWN LOW gangsta rapperz!)

    4. Definitely can’t wait for the new season. A whole lot has happened between the two years, so I can’t wait to see what topics they touch on the show.

    5. Its been a loooooong wait.

I thought the second season was nice but the first season was a lot better.

Some of the second series episodes got a little repetitive and boring
(The Story of Thugnificent, Ballin’, Invasion of the Katrinians, The S-Word, The Story of Gangstalicious Part 2″)

The only classics for me in the second season were Stinkmeaner Strikes Back (that 9th beat was crazy), Home Alone, The Story of Catcher Freeman AND DIE TRYIN!!!!!!!!!

Also it felt like the episodes were not enough about the Freemans.

All the episodes were great on the first.
But it also had a lot episodes with different topics, chilled out episodes which made you think
(Riley Wuz Here, The Itis, A Huey Freeman Christmas, Return of the King, The Block Is Hot, The Passion of Reverend Ruckus).

In two years since the last series a lot has happened in the world.
If someone just got out of a coma and they asked me what the biggest world headlines were, the first two stories I would tell them would be about black men (and I aint even talking about T Woods) so McGruder has got a lot of ammo to make his best series yet.
