Fall Fashion 2002

This season, it’s all about keepin’ it real, real simple. With designers revamping those tried and true favorites like denim, track suits and leather, the theme seems to be go for what you know. According to J. Alexander Martin, Vice President of FUBU the Collection, “Fall is all about the re-birth of denim. The focus is on dirty denims and washed denims that feature complex treatments and textures. Retro also makes a comeback with vintage throwback jerseys.”

With the “back to basics” vibe that is everywhere these days, it’s no surprise that black is emerging once again as the hottest hue for fall. Like that worn out sweater or old pair of jeans, black is the color that you just can’t let go of. And with good reason it’s always stylish and looks good on everyone anytime, anywhere. So how do you breathe new life into this old favorite? Mix it up with a bold, vivid color like shocking red or set it off with an earthy neutral like pale khaki. (see example 1)

Trend or no trend, wearing black every single day can get old, not to mention a little depressing. Luckily there’s another option, brown. As the often overlooked cousin to black, this warm, rich and surprisingly versatile shade is getting its share of exposure in fall collections and I must say, brown has never looked better. For a look that’s casual but fly, try a hoodie in toffee, chocolate or cafe au lait. (see example 2)

Whether your style is rough and tough or clean and classic, it’s all about the details. Stand out by sporting basic pieces with a twist. Eye-catching accents like embroidery, patches and leather are the next wave. Avirex executive Jacky Clyman says, “Leather and leather trim will be very important for Fall and we have used it on denim, knits and sweaters. We’re also bringing back more military inspired leather jackets and will have an updated version of the traditional A-2, MA-1 military styles.” The bottom line? Fall must-haves are easy, familiar and totally wearable. Looking good this season is a no-brainer. (see example 3)
