Throwback Thursday: You Sampled It Wrong

Tribe vs. Main Source vs. CMW vs. Ice Cube vs. Freestyle Fellowship vs. Tim Dog

Tribe vs. Main Source vs. CMW vs. Ice Cube vs. Freestyle Fellowship vs. Tim Dog
    (Sample: Lou Donaldson “Pot Belly”)
Tribe gets a nod here for getting this one out there first, even though it was just on 12″ b-side. ’91 was obviously a big year for Lou’s sample, Cube and the Boogiemen has the most unique of the bunch, but not the best in my opinion. Main Source’s is easily the best here overall, with Extra P’s beat being extra crispy and the song itself being one of the all-time best tackling police brutality. CMW’s track, awesome title aside, is really sinister and would be my next choice. Tim Dog takes the L here, not because he was the last one to the party, or because “Timberlands” has one of the most unintentionally hilarious choruses, but he just didn’t flip it quite as nice. Not to mention, he also sampled “Pot Belly” on the preceding song “I Get Wrecked.”
I’m going to start doing “Who Sampled It Wrong” every week as part of our Throwback Thursdays, so be on the lookout folks.
A Tribe Called Quest “If The Papes Come Remix” 1990 (Produced by Hoods)
Main Source “Just A Friendly Game of Baseball” 1991 (Produced by Large Professor)
Compton’s Most Wanted “Driveby Miss Daisy” 1991 (Produced by DJ Slip & Unknown)
Ice Cube “Horny Lil Devil” 1991 (Produced by Boogiemen & Ice Cube)
Freestyle Fellowship “Respect Due” 1993 (Produced by The Earthquake Brothers)
Tim Dog “Timberlands” 1993 (Produced by Tim Dog)

    1. every time i hear some old ice cube, it never fails to amaze me how ruthless the guy was.
we may never see another like him….long live the cube.

      I’m Rick James BITCH!

    2. The beginning is Da Youngstas’ “Pass Da Mic.”

Anyway, I gotta go with Main Source on this one. “Baseball” is too dope.

Also forgotten with this sample is Da King & I with “Flip Da Script.”

    3. All the songs take you bact to the Golden Era all great songs.Cube and Tribe legends of the Era.We cant go back but we can listen to this great music forever.

      1. word…couldn’t of said it any better than that…one of the greatest eras of hip hop, if not, the greatest, period!

    4. do any new school cats even know what we are doing here? do they even know what samples are? an are labels understanding that samples opened a WEALTH of music to a generation that would have otherwise not known who the hell Lou was????
