Hopeful for a #1 debut, Damian Marley & Nas‘ Distant Relatives project began its run on the charts at #4. The Universal Republic/Def Jam Records collaborative release fell behind The Black Keys, Justin Bieber and a new addition of Glee music. The Africa-inspired project did clear 50,000 units, with its rich commentary on the parallel relationship between Hip Hop and Reggae. Lil Wayne, K’Naan, Dennis Brown and Joss Stone appear on the work produced by Damian and brother Stephen.
The other major debut was the anticipated reunion album of Talib Kweli & Hi-Tek as Reflection Eternal. A decade after their acclaimed and commercially successful Rawkus Records debut, Train of Thought, Revolutions Per Minute has been met with a new dose of rave reviews, as the duo finds themselves on Warner Brothers/Asylum Records. With co-executive production by Sha Money XL, R.P.M. features appearances from Bun B, J. Cole, Mos Def and Jay Electronica, among an assortment of Pop/R&B appearances. The album debuted at #17, moving over 20,000 first-week units.
As usual of late, Usher‘s Raymond v. Raymond maintained its #7 place. B.o.B. Presents The Adventures of Bobby Ray also held at #13, as the Rebel Rock sensation has the strongest commercial debut in Rap thus far in 2010. Another genre-bending Georgia talent, DXnext alum, Janelle Monae‘s sophomore album, The Archandroid debuted at #16. With strong cosigns from both Big Boi and Diddy, the Bad Boy/Atlantic Records starlet furthers her ascent to the mainstream.

Trina‘s Pop-inspired album, Amazin’ sits on the cusp of 50,000 units sold. The Diamond Princess’ independent release boasts backing by EMI Records, similar to releases by Raekwon and Twista last year.
Another Warner Rap release, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony‘s Uni5: The World’s Enemy slipped to #82. The radio-friendly album features a reunited cast of Bone brothers, who have shot an assortment of videos to support the DJ U-Neek-produced effort.
Once kin to the same Ruthless Records family that spawned Bone Thugs, 8Ball & MJG remained in the Top 100 with Ten Toes Down. Distributed through E1 Entertainment, the Grand Hustle project is executive produced by T.I., and features an extensive guest-list of contemporaries and newer artists influenced by the Memphis mainstays.
Another comeback act, Cypress Hill, may be bidding the Top 200 farewell, with their Rise Up. The Priority Records release features production by Pete Rock and Alchemist, as well as high-profile appearances from Tom Morello and Pitbull. The reunion of B-Real, Sen Dog and DJ Muggs has yet to pass the 40,000 mark, though it remains close.

WTF is wrong with hiphop fans? Distant Relatives and RPM only sold a combined 70k. Both albums are amazing, yet hiphop fans don’t seem to want to go out and buy albums these days. Everyone talks a good game when the announcement for a classic album comes out and fake fucks claim they’ll cop it, but here we go again.

I’m from the dirty dirty and it aint about NY groupies R any of that dumbness. Its about music that you can relate to, music that can inspire you. I’m not saying that Lil Wayne isn’t hiphop but his “Type” of hiphop is oversaturated in the market place and it is NOT the essence of hiphop. Hiphop is about overcoming the struggle, joy, hope, the grim nature of reality, and finding some happiness in the midst of darkness. And in my opinion Lil Wayne shouldn’t even be mentioned in the same breath as Nas when it comes to being the better MC. Wayne and his young money click can’t even get past ONE member of Slaughter House soooo I don’t think he’ll have much chance at Nas. But that’s my take on the subject. Young Money and Wayne has the “machine” churning for them right now so of course there’re going to sell more. Nas and D had no were near the promotion that Wayne(YM) has and they aren’t going AGAINST the grain. I mean ask yourself…”Why do I like Young Money?” Chances are its because you can put one of there songs on and see some big booty females shaking that thang and might have a chance of getting laid. If you play a Nas track you’ll have to rewind it a few times just so you can catch all the similes and methaphors…not to mention if your education level isn’t too high you might need a dictionary too. Sadly, this generation doesn’t like to read or rewind so….Wayne(YM) sells more.

Why are people so surprised the Nas/Marley album didn’t sell??
1. Collaborative albums NEVER do well
2. This album had no promo until after it dropped (I only started seeing banners and interviews after it came out)
3. They only put out one single, and it wasn’t even the best single choice or video they could have dropped. (“My Generation” as a single alone would have given them sales over 200,000)
4. They kept pushing the damn album back and people got confused about when it was coming out
5. Nas and Damian Marley’s name’s aren’t on the front cover of the album (Which is retarded)
6. This CD wasn’t in all the stores… I checked and people online have complained about this also
7. Some places actually just got this on the 25th (Yesterday)
8. Nas’ last album (Untitled) wasn’t promoted well and it came out 2 years ago.
9. Damian hasn’t really been popular since Welcome to Jamrock in 2005….
10. Every time they do performances they use a live band which makes their songs sound terrible and they only perform “As We Enter” which isn’t appealing to every audience.
The label and both Nas and Marley made MANY mistakes…. If they had fixed 7 out of 10 of those things, it would have worked out differently.

I’m not sure where your getting lack of promo from. I went to see Nas and Damian in concert LAST SUMMER when they first started touring. Plus they been on every hip hop site since announcing the album. Even with the pushbacks, the album still came out just over a year after it’s announcement. The album got released as people’s interest was peaked. Problem is the album got leaked a week early plus, teenage girls are in no hurry for real shit like this.
I think the label did a hell of a job for once. They been touring, the project wasn’t rushed, and 99.99% of the fans are more than satisfied, including this guy. I personally don’t care if I have the only copy on Earth, this shit is iconic and is light years ahead of anything else. I dope album from start to finish with no filler. Niggas need to take note.
The album had major promo dude, I also saw Nas & Jr. Gong last summer at Rock the Bells. But even before that, it was promoted, just pushed back of course.
When Distant Relatives came out, I went to Best Buy and they had them there (Plus, Revolutions Per Minute, copped both). Guess it depends on the demographics.
I would have liked to see much more sales, but it isn’t too horrible. Maybe they will pick up in a few weeks given that they are promoting the fuck outta it on Jimmy Kimmel and such.
I bought Distant Relatives and Roc Marciano’s Marcberg album. I’m happy with my $20 bucks spent. I’ll probably get Reflection Eternal’s album after I hear it.
Got all 3, satisfied with every one of them. Reflection Eternal not quite as good as Train of Thought, but dope nonetheless.
Considering promotion was basically word of mouth, and they had no single in rotation. I’d say they did pretty well. #4 on the Charts with 58,000…. given the landscape of album sales today. In the long run, with constant promotion, touring and possibly a couple videos off the album maybe the album will see decent sales

Janelle is an amazing entertainer. I would have liked for her to do a bit better first week out but I think as people hear about her more and see her perform, her numbers will rise. As diverse of a sound this album is I think she’ll have an international appeal if the label does her right.

To be honest, this is no different than when Nas released Illmatic. That shit wasn’t selling either and it’s been called the best hip hop album EVER by many in the music industry. I think as long as your goal is to make dope music, it’ll sell over the time. It’s well over a decade later and Nas still makes money off his first album. Soulja Boy won’t have those same results…count on it.
Whats really crazy is that the #4 album on the US Album Chart sold less than 60k copies…clearly people are not supporting the music…sad thing is this mostly affects Black music…Justin Beiber & Lady Antebellum don’t seem to have trouble putting up the big numbers. We just don’t support ourselves. The crazy thing is that as good as Distant Relatives & Janelle Monae’s music is, they both deserved to go over 150k at least first week. But thats just the climate of music these days
But one thing I can say about Distant Relatives…as we have seen with albums such as Illmatic, Reasonable Doubt, etc…is that classics sell over time & this will be no different. Props to those guys on making a phenomenal album.

The music business is scary and getting scarier. I am sure he is selling a gang load of digital singles, but B.o.B has two huge hits on the radio right now and has only managed to sell 170,000 units total. What is going on?!?
Nas is still the greatest, but he is slowly making himself irrelevant to all but his die hard supporters. He thought he was too big a few years ago and was turning away from people like AZ who he should have kept working with. His sales have been hurting and this does not help. Distant Relatives does get his name out there and if he his smart, there will be a Nas single in a couple months and an album in the next five.

The music industry is far from dead. You have to look at single sales, ringtones, digital sales and live shows. BoB’s single sold far more than his album, Luda’s single “How low can u go” sold over a million units. Now when it comes to album sales rap is selling the lowest compared to other forms of music b/c the albums are trash and the market is over saturated with garbage rappers.

i’ve been watchin the decline for a couple of years now and the problem is “albums.” Rappers don’t make good albums anymore. they focus so hard on a hit single that when it comes time to put the album out that single is the only thing worth buying, which is why singles still sell good. when i was a kid i was a cypress fan ,but now their music just sucks. it doesn’t inspire, it’s nothing new or something they haven’t done before. same wit Snoop Dogg, who is in my top 5, his last two albums were complete garbage. they expect us rap fans to go to the stores and buy whatever they put out. then call us out when we don’t support their garbage. we’re in the process of rebuildin rap. we’re just gettin past the age of ringtone songs and souja boy. which almost destroyed rap. cause niggaz was just makin catchy hooks to make a quick buck til the people stopped buyin it and the majors finally realized ringtone rappers can’t sell albums. now we’re gettin back to havin to really know how to rap to get on. you can see this by the new rappers coming out like drake, donnis, big sean, pill, laws, wiz, freddie gibbs, the cool kids and many more. once these new rappers come out and put out quality albums it will restore the confidence in rap fans to go out and buy albums again because it will feel like they’re gettin their moneys worth and not buyin an album that has only one or two jammin songs.
