YNW Melly Inserts Himself Into Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Like That’ Verse

YNW Melly has boldly alleged he was dissed on Kendrick Lamar‘s “Like That” verse.

On Friday (March 22), the incarcerated rapper took to his Instagram stories where he stirred up drama, alleging that K Dot took a direct shot at him on “Like That” — fresh off Future and Metro Boomin‘s new album We Don’t Trust You.

In a screenshot shared by DJ Akademiks, Melly highlighted a lyrical mix-up, pointing out a post displaying Genius’ lyrics to “Like That,” which mistakenly mentions Melly Mell instead of Hip Hop legend Melle Mel, the apparent target of Kenny’s verse.

“Wasn’t ready for this stray @kendricklamar [person talking and man facepalming emoji] you gone at least share my single today [man shrugging emoji],” Melly wrote in his post.

Taking to the comment section of the post, the “Murder On My Mind” rapper added, “@kendricklamar thought we was cool I sent you my vocals for your record [man facepalming emoji] come on OG I’m innocent [ pensive face and bruised heart emoji].”

On the verse in question the West Coast rhymer spits, “I crash out, like, ‘Fuck rap,’ diss Melle Mel if I had to/Got 2TEEZ with me, I’m snatchin’ chains and burnin’ tattoos, it’s up.”

Kendrick’s verse was sparked by Melle Mel’s critique in a March 2023 interview where he questioned Kendrick’s No. 2 spot on Billboard‘s 50 Greatest Rappers of All-Time list, citing his lack of street appeal. Mel expressed doubt over Kendrick’s club hits, suggesting they don’t align with his ranking.

“Even Kendrick Lamar being No. 2. I don’t know,” said Mel, during an interview with The Art of Dialogue. “Obviously, he made some good songs. But those songs don’t translate into the street part of hip-hop. That’s another level of hip-hop.”

“I don’t know what records that he made like that,” he continued. “I might know one or two of them. But I don’t think you hear Kendrick in the club like that. It might be a record that’s his record that I don’t know. It don’t translate into him being the No. 2 rapper of all-time. How does that happen? It shouldn’t. Because he’s fairly a new rapper.”

“When Kendrick Lamar does these songs, nobody wants to rap like Kendrick Lamar. Nobody wants to rap like Eminem,” Mel added.

Meanwhile, Kendrick Lamar has not responded to YNW Melly’s claim.

      1. That’s why a lot of rappers get pissed with sites like genious. Lyrics are taken out of context, and the people that submit stuff can’t spell or double check their spelling (as in this context). But seriously, dude thought he’s big enough to be mentioned lol

      1. He isn’t any better than the young rap illiterate fans today. You have dudes shitting on Melle Melle because he’s told the truth about Jay, Eminem, and now Kendrick. None of them have had the all around impact to the game, but white people put them in those spots in the latter two cases, and in Jay’s case, he got there because Pac and Biggie died. No rapper should ever have a bad word to say about him except to accept his constructive criticism like you do your elders in your family because he built this shit. The Message is the single most important song in hip hop history. There would be none of them without him.

    1. Melle Melle be spitting facts about these dudes. White people need to stop commenting on hip hop. Drake, J. Cole, nor Kendrick are top 50 in the history of this shit, and this is who these cornballs elevated to those spots because they destroyed our genre like they do everything else. Fuckers got Cardi B and Nicki Minaj as top 20 rappers, lmao. I don’t see any hip hop artists proclaiming who is better than the Beatles, so they need to stay out of our shit.
