Hip Hop Album Sales: The Week Ending 10/2/2011

As projections stated, J. Cole cleared 200,000 units with his debut album, Cole World: The Sideline Story. The Roc Nation artist scored a #1, and with a margin of over 50,000 units. With Phonte and 9th Wonder also having impressive debut weeks on the chart, the last days of September, 2011 are undoubtedly the biggest ever, for North Carolina Hip Hop.

Cole World sold over 215,000 first-week units. Backed by Sony Records, Jay-Z’s Roc Nation flagship artist achieved a #1 debut at just 26 years old. Largely self-produced, the Fayetteville, North Carolina native’s album featured Drake and Missy Elliott, in addition to Jay.

Lil Wayne‘s Tha Carter IV slipped two places to #7. The platinum works features the likes of Tech N9ne, Andre 3000 and Nas, as the top-selling 2011 Hip Hop/Rap release.

Jay-Z and Kanye West’s Watch The Throne fell two spots of its own to #11. The Roc-A-Fella alumni’s first collaborative album features production contributions from 88-Keys, RZA and Lex Luger.

Jay’s wife Beyonce and her 4 climbed three spots. The pregnant Pop/R&B superstar’s fourth solo offering features an appearance by Outkast’s Andre 3000, along with production from Kanye West and his production team – including Jeff Bhasker, as well as a writing credit to former G.O.O.D. Music artist Consequence.

Royce Da 5’9 and Eminem (as Bad Meets Evil) and their album, Hell: The Sequel fell just one spot to #33. The album features production from Mobb Deep’s Havoc, Mr. Porter and Self Scientific’s DJ Khalil.

It was a historic week for fans of Little Brother. Emcee/singer Phonte delivered his solo debut, Charity Starts At Home. Self-released on Foreign Exchange Music, with E1 distribution, the thematic works was a creative reunion with former band-mate 9th Wonder, who produced much of the album. The independent effort also featured vocal appearances by Evidence, Elzhi and Big K.R.I.T. Charity very nearly cracked the Top 50, selling over 8,000 units.

Speaking of Evidence, the Dilated Peoples emcee’s first project with Rhymesayers Entertainment, Cats & Dogs, was within 500 units of his North Carolina collaborator. The Los Angeles, California rapper/producer’s latest solo effort sold over 7,500 copies, with production by DJ Premier, Alchemist and Babu, in addition to himself. RSE’s co-founder Slug also appears on the work, along with label-mate Aesop Rock.

Close behind, 9th Wonder’s long-awaited The Wonder Years album debuted at #70. The former Little Brother producer/deejay’s album was a carry-over from his tenure at Asylum Records. The latest carnation of the work has the Grammy Award-winning North Carolina mainstay in the lab with the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Warren G and Mac Miller, in addition to his own WWMG/Jamla roster of Skyzoo, Thee Tom Hardy and Rapsody. An iTunes edition boasted three additional songs.

Houston, Texas Christian Rap group the 116 Clique released their latest album, Man Up, in conjunction with Reach Records and Lecrae’s film. The effort landed the trio’s fourth album a Top 100 debut. Meanwhile, label-mate Lecrae’s Rehab also bounced back onto the charts in a major way, at #109. According to data, the 2010 Reach Records project has sold over 115,000 copies to date.

Another H-Town act, emcee/singer Z-Ro’s latest “drug” series album, Meth, sold another 2,500 units. The Screwed Up Click alum has previously released Crack, Cocaine and Heroin. The fourth album in the series, released by Rap-A-Lot Records, features Willie D, Yo Gotti and Slim Thug.

      1. Nig, when WTT and Carter4 did big numbers things started to look up for hip hop. You stanz are killing me with these fake azz posts.

      1. Um, we did what?? How about wait and see if he goes platinum before you try to brag. Petey Pablo already brought 2 gold albums home for North Carolina, so we got that already, now we need a platinum album. I hope he get there but it’s not looking too good with these low ass first week numbers. I blame Jay Z.

      1. He’s at 51. HHDX just has a habit of not reporting everything because they’re lazy. Check out the Billboard website. Idiot. And by the way, if your album makes #1 in its first week, its already made enough money to not be called flop. Go to business school.

      2. shiit yoo, Wayne is still practically doing Games first week numbers. Disappointing to see cuz R.E.D. was definitely the best major label release this year..Even worse to see 2 incredible releases by Phonte and 9th with such paltry numbers. But then again…I dont buy music that shits free! Why no news about Master of Ceremonies or 4TRK MIND? Ive been checking the site all week, come on hiphopdx u dropped the Jcole review like 2 days before he dropped, show other artists love im sick of seeing that dudes face all over my fave website

      3. dude drop the album with no other rap album droping on that date thats how he got the number one spot

if anything dude owe the label money from them numbers

      4. just cause it hit number 1 that dont mean its not a flop ask interscope did that shit flop when they have to pay for all those damn features and 95k in a week dosent make anybody any money GAME IS BROKE ASK THE REPO MAN AND THE JUDGE THAT HAD HIM PAY 90K FOR MONEY HE OWE ON JEWELRY STUPID FOOL

      5. Game already sold 10 million worldwide total, so damn a first week total for his 4th album. Chill out lil Stan.

      6. R.E.D. album was terrible and soft, trend-orientated pop music labelled as gangsta rap. This alone should disqualify it from any discussion.

    1. Im from Chicago Phontes ablum was grossly undershipped i dont even think Bestbuy on 87thst even have anymore there telling you to buying it online..Physical copies trump Itunes and buying directly from the record label.

      1. we? dumb ass, columbia ain’t even eating off of this album yet, because it hasn’t even turned a profit yet lol.

      2. @UK Dre 217k records sold (@10.99)= $2,384,830 revenue made off of this album thus far and thats in the US alone. I am not involved in this “we eating” statement but for damn sure J. Cole/Roc Nation/Columbia are “eating” right now lol

Dont forget that J. Cole produced 85% of the album…. The album is definitely in profits right now, I am sure they didnt spend 2 mill on this album… not even close. Minimal features and 85% production by J. Cole, if they were ever supposed to release the info I am willing to bet J. Cole’s album was one of the albums with the smallest budget.

    2. I’m a huge Cole fan…but still i will admit RED was slightly better…so RED was the best album put out this year…its jus my opinion so i don give a fuck what y’all have to say!!

      1. RED was absolutely terrible and should not appear in one best list of this year. It was label constructed, no substance, followed every single trends, elementary rhyming, tons of features and an unimpressive Game who struggled to amaze his closest fans and was outshined by every single guest appearance. Game gives whack a whole new meaning.

    3. in b4 da haterz. cole did great 4 a debut album. i no we wuz expectin 250k but 217k is just az good. most niggaz debutz don’t even get those numbahz nowadayz. big sean had potential but only sold 89k in da 1st week. i’m happy dat cole got sold dat much but da haterz gon come in anyway sayin he didn’t go gold or platinum and shit like dat. there favrite rappa (possibly undaground) would b happy to sell that much period. so let da haterz hate.

      RNGMB BITCH! COLE WORLD NIGGAZ!

      1. Big Sean sold 500,000 copies of his single before his debut, so they even because Cole couldn’t sell 3 seperate singles, even with Drake’s help.

Why Cole World on sale at Target for $9.99 minus $2.00 discount for a grand total of $8.50?? Tony Bennet going for $14.00 and even Lil Wayne’s mixtape Unbreakable going for $10.89, a fucking mixtape lol.

You know Columbia/Sony purchased 100,000 copies lol.

      1. but not hard enough. 2 years and hundreds of thousands spent in marketing by SONY (major label) and he didn’t even crack 250,000.= fail

      2. 2 years of touring…. doing shows making money for himself and the label.

Just do the math bro 217k (@10.99)= 2.3 mil. You said it yourself, hundreds of thousands of dollars spent on marketing (which I dont think it was in the high hundreds either) and the revenue after a week is 2.3 million dollars and climbing… Do u need me to continue? lol

    4. 7500 for cats & dogs?? Unfuckinbelievable!!! This shit is a masterpiece and trumps all the bullshit released this year. The sad part is these clowns selling are wack and won’t have a smidgen of longevity. So Fuck them!!! Keep putting out classic shit Ev!!

      1. Looks like Watch The Throne is struggling to barely hit platinum let alone double lol. Get up out of here, Stanley.

    5. Phonte and evidences albums should be gold status already based on album quality. Too bad america is filled with followers.

      1. ok, ross and sean had singles that were platinum as well, so their numbers still made more income. you are one crazy stan lol.

    6. A LIL OVER A MONTH AND RED IS DEAD NO MORE WACK SINGLES ITS OVER AND SK IS KILLIN SHIT RIGHT NOW KARMA IS A FUCKIN BITCH

    7. Cole man you did it, got that number one spot that you deserve so bad. Keep it up with the dope music and your gunna be one of the all time greats.

      Cole World Boi

      1. Not just one single by itself. Jay and Kanye went on a nationwide tour to promote the hell out of that album as well. Their second single didn’t do that good and their album was expeted to platinum by now. It’s been 3 months and they still haven’t went platinum, so it’s a brick

      2. Thats funny because WTT’s tour hasnt started yet…. They didnt tour before the album dropped…. at all lol

      1. i just love it how the people who were screaming that he’d sell 50k now just wont accept it…

the nigga’s on some real shit, b happy for him. donald trump is not going to shake his hand for us…
(i dont like lil wayne but you dnt see me trash him, the nigga successfull)

      2. nigga, wayne went platinum back in 1999, so chill with that acting like he just starting being popular. you lil stans be killing me. don’t get mad because people aren’t impressed with your fav doing small numbers lol.

      1. Gold? Wtf? this nigga will be lucky if his album goes gold by the end of this year. Are you really that crazy or just a faithful stan?

      1. LMAO!!! u see that f*ckboi silent now! He brick on a major-powerhouse without no hit singles to recoupe that money!

    8. They talking like J Cole is a young man at 26yrs old going on 27 in a few months lol. That nigga a grown ass man trying to market himself as a 19 year old. Drake’s debut came out when he was only 23 and his second album coming on his 25th birthday, so he was young and still is. J Cole is an old head and ain’t nothing wrong with that.

      1. it’s not old like grand daddy, but it’s not young neither. 2 pac had just turned 25 three months prior to him getting killed and biggie was only 24, so j cole at 26 going on 27 in january, isn’t like some young prodigy.

      2. I dont blog but I gotta respond drake is a 86 baby cole is 85 they 1 year apart how the f*** is drake young and cole old? thats like sayin man that dude thats 60 is young but at 61 old cmon fool use ur f**kin stupid son ur point is dumb

    9. Damn Wayne still doing big numbers like that. I guess the haters are going to still act like Baby buying them. Congratulations to Wayne on selling 2.7 million copies worldwide so far, even with all the hate.

    10. TO THE PEOPLE SAYING THAT WATCH THE THRONE IS DOING CRAZY NUMBERS LMAO … JUST GIVE UP ALREADY, THE SHITS NOT EVEN PLATINUM YET LOOOOOL … KANYE BY HIMSELF WOULD HAVE WENT PLATINUM WEEKS AGO.

      1. yeah, people were acting like wtt was going to go platinum in it’s first week and now it’s been 3 months and it’s still not platinum lol.

      2. Check your facts…..

Blueprint 3 shipped and certified platinum after 2 months of release.

MBDTF shipped and certified platinum 1 1/2 months after release.

WTT shipped and certified platinum after 1 month of release.

Feel free to search RIAA’s Gold and Platinum database as I did the same.

        http://riaa.com/goldandplatinumdata.php?content_selector=gold-platinum-searchable-database

Not saying WTT is doing major numbers but you cant say Ye would have done more by himself because he released and album last Nov. that didnt do as good as this one is doing in the same time frame.

    11. What you guys fail to realize is, is that it’s not really about sales like that. It’s about the album itself and if it’s a good listen. in my opinion, i could listen to J.Cole’s much more than Drake, Nicki, Big Sean, and Wiz cause this dude speaks the truth

      1. last time i checked, all of those rappers probably speak the truth, because non of them are talking about killing or drug dealing, so stop with the stanning and hating. breathe lil nigga

      1. stop acting like you a lil wayne fan. you trying to get people to make negative comments about wayne because of your stupid undercover hateful comment. this is the new form of hate and everybody with sense can see right through your ass.

      2. Anon # 2 you’re a dumbass. It’s noot a “new form of hate.” It’s called sarcasm. Look it up idiot.

    12. I see that Lil Wayne is still in the top ten and that’s amazing. After all the talk about how he was going to fall out of the top ten after his first week, I would have never expected him to do this good. Wayne works hard and he doesn’t mind exposing himself on 100 songs per year. You got some of these so called best rappers, who haven’t even did 100 songs in their career, because they can’t create that fast.

    13. WTT wasn’t meant for teens, so just the fact it will still go over a million is impressive. J. Cole won’t see platinum… Maybe gold, and the album is pretty good, but people love shitting on the veterans, as if their track records suddenly don’t mean shit.

      1. ain’t nobody shit n on jay, we just speaking the truth. wtt is sitting on 930,000 copies after 9 whole weeks and that ain’t shit to brag about. jigga was the one talking all cocky and shit like his shit was going platinum because it didn’t leak. get the fuck out here with that shit, stan.

      2. You probably the same person comparing Cole World to R.E.D., when Game’s track record is 10 million sold worldwide.

    14. Take Care comes out in 2 weeks and so far it has had NO PROMOTION whatsoever other than one single … I bet it sells 600k-700k anyways based off of the fact that Drake can keep it 100 in his raps and still sound commercial.

      1. When Take Care comes out and does good numbers, the haters will be talking about Baby buying it like they did Carter 4.

      2. Actually the fact that he sings and raps…bitches like singers…hes not all that as a rapper but he came out at the right time where he sounds good compared to the bullshit on the radio….but once people hear guys elzhi, kendrick lamar, pharoahe monch, and sean price, theyll forget drake even exists

      3. Buttt since they keep it real and dont conform to the radio they wont ever be heard unfortunately…at least cole made it big…hes actually lyrical and on top of the charts thats unheard of nowadays

      4. MonE i cosign that. people love to hate and make excuses for why an artist they dont like gets big numbers. FTH. (fuck the haters). peace

    15. People are acting like record sales don’t count and at the same time screaming “number 1”. I can’t stand hypocrisy and fake people. It’s either you glad that your artist is number 1 or it doesn’t matter that he didn’t do big numbers. You can’t have it both ways, because number 1 status is based on sales. Think about that you damn bastards lol. Out!

    16. Good for him if you like it support it and go buy if not stop talking shit
though im not a wayne or drake fan I didnt speak ill of there sales or talk shit bout them there doing there thing i just dont like there music and thats personal opinion just cus someone does not agree with u dosent mean u should bash them

    17. D*mn where da Dead album?…I meant red album?!?

Interscope is sick rightnow! not even 100k 1st-week now not even on da charts at all!!! Not even no hit-singles to try to recoupe the money wasted on all 20 featured rappers on that flop!

    18. Wild100:

      1. RED was terrible and soft, trend-orientated pop music marketed as gangsta rap. So, the low sales are more than deserved.

    22. Y’all niggas actin like game had michael jackson, or the beatles on the album. Rap features arn’t that expensive. He prolly only paid like 10k per feature. Seriouly get real. The 200k album sales is more than enough to pay for those features. He prolly didnt make money for himself, but im sure he aint broke dumbasses

      1. uhm repo man takes his car and a judge orderd him to pay 90k to pay for jewelry when you have to go to court because you owe money you broke

      1. ^^^^^^FOR THE LAST TIME THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS GOLD OR PLATINUM WORLDWIDE RIAA ONLY CERTIFIES A ALBUM FOR THE COUNTRY IT SELLS IN.GAME COULD SELL 500K WORLDWIDE BUT IT WONT BE A GOLD ALBUM

      5. ^^^^^^^game aint flop u dickwad, hip hop flopped, game has already outsold 95% of rappers this year (other 5% wayne, jay, yeezy, minaj, drake n wiz)..so i ask u this r u a real hip hop fan or a commercial fan. if you a real hip hop fan, then game most likely outsold your favorite rapper. if you a commercial fan, the you opinion doesnt mean shit homo

      6. nigga lloyd banks sold more than game point blank period
and he is not on a major, not to mention that BBB went gold
        game over deal with that

    23. I can be a man of my word and congratulate j.cole on his numbers. i was the first person to say that he wouldnt do big numbers. i said he would sell 4 copies in his first week and he proved me wrong. im man enough to admit when im wrong. J.Cole handled his business. I am now a big fan of J.Cole after he put up these numbers and on a second listen to his album the kid can flow so now im a huge fan and a big supporter. do ur thang Cole.

      ROC NATION bitches!!!

      1. Ur the reason this site gets no respect. Baseless ass nigga. How u gon hop on a nigga just because he sold 200k in the 1st week. Your opinion means shit. definition of a dick hopper, fuckin homo.

      3. Wow. You just confessed to being a dick rider. Good job & I guess there’s no mystery to how you become a Lil Wayne fan. Lol. Fucking front runner fags I tell ya.

      4. Wayne is Lord you are the most retarded person on internet. Is that all you check out music for, if it sells then its dope? You stink.

    24. Wild100:

      1. Cole sounds like he needed some artist development from some real stars. Jay Z set him up for failure once he realized his rep as an executive was on the line. J Cole sounds like a rookie with weak ass drum machine beats.

    25. im aftermaths heavyweight oops im not on the label and the truth is dre hasnt worked with me since the documentry thats why i get producers to copy his style

    26. u nigga’s love to hate game..he coo! i say that as a rap fan! so when nas and common drop albums their not getting close to 96K 1st week..not close! so do them niggas suck??? u niggas is clowning rappers for not selling as much as the top mainstream artist! enjoy the music bcuz sales dont mean quality! they mean popularity! food for thought!

      1. LOOK HOW COMMON & NAS BEHAVE IN THE MEDIA AND THEN LOOK HOW GAYME ACTS!!! GAYME HIMSELF CLOWNED OTHER PEOPLE FOR LOW SALES, SO WHAT HE’S GETTING NOW IS COMPLETELY DESERVED!!!

      2. for the record, a male stripper is the one who takes all your wife’s money, cums in her mouth and sends her home to you. that’s called being a pimp and making a woman a trick. i would rather be a male stripper getting money from lame females than a lame ass man tricking his money on whores in a strip clum. good game for your dumb ass.

    27. really happy for j. cole…been watchin his grind for a minute and really respect his album, absolutely loved about half the songs and understand the rest.

      1. Sony/Columbia spending hundreds of thousand on promotions doesn’t count as grind.

Being an opening act for Rihanna and borrowing some her fans ain’t grinding.

Getting a Drake, Missy Elliot and Jay Z feature ain’t grinding.

Getting a high priced Paula Abdul sample to try and get spends ain’t grinding.

You ain’t shit put a crazy stan, who wishes Cole sold at least 300,000 in his first week. Negro please.

      2. seriously man all he said was he was happy for him. whyd you have to hop on his dick for that. How about grinding is producing over 85% of your own album when all the best producers in the game want your shit. J cole put out a very solid album, no classic, but a great debut.

      3. Cole Produced 80-85 percent of his albulm and has a ft by Jay-Z the man the signed him a Hook from Trey songz if you even want to call it a hook since cole is on 50% of the hook and hook from missy elliot she is old news and he brought her back and drake please the orginal in da morning is better than the verse with drake that was a song just to say there cool with all the who better than who…… this is drake albulm produced none of it and talk about features you herd more of other people than him

        1. Fireworks Drake & Alicia Keys
        2. Karaoke Drake
        3. The Resistance Drake
        4. Over Drake
        5. Show Me a Good Time Drake
        6. Up All Night Drake & Nicki Minaj
        7. Fancy Drake, T.I. & Swizz Beatz

    28. Anatomy of a hater: Insert “gay” into rap names (i.e lil gayne, kangay west, gay-z, gayme, eminhim, dr. gay, gay cole, angay 3000, etc.)

      1. hey, why would someone hate on 215,000 sold? now if he had done at least 250,000 then maybe a little hate, but not for 215,000 lol. his numbers is mouse food…..crumbs.

      2. Cole didn’t go gold so ain’t nothing to hate on. Boy you stanleys is working overtime trying to make it seem like he made history.

      3. I don’t even think J. Cole’s album is all that great – it was solid tho. I just had to comment here cuz yall niggas on here talking bout “215K is crumbs” and “he didn’t go gold” like selling that many in the first week is not an accomplishment.

Despite what you guys THINK you know about the music biz, going gold in the 1st week is not very common AT ALL when you look at how many albums are released every year. Maybe a handful of albums sell like Wayne did each year, so don’t be ridiculous and think that anything that falls short of that is a failure. You dumb fucks would know that if you really FOLLOWED music instead of getting all your info from fucking blogs.

      1. man, everybody in my city still got carter 4 in the disc player and that’s real nigga shit. you a hater with nothing but trash in your pockets lol…

    33. Bill – TRUE THAT . sells dont mean quality , it means popularity . lil wayne is a radio pop rapper diva . hes not hip hop or street to me

      1. pop means popular, dumb ass. that means you have become a freaking star. wayne was rapping like most of these new boys back in 1999. he got so many styles, he can be a group.

    35. This is pretty cool to see…his debut beat out a lot of guys who had more exposure that are in his same group of new artists….hopefully this a sign that guys who make good music will began to sell again.

I don’t know why people arguing on here though? We don’t get paid to argue for these dudes…lol

    36. HERBS ON BLOG SITES ALWAYS SAYING THAT THE CARTER 4 IS WACK BUT THAT’S THE ONLY CD YOU HEAR BUMPING.

NOBODY IS BUMPING COLE WORD EXCEPT FOR BROKE ASS BACK PACKING NERDS, NOBODY IS BUMPING WATCH THE THRONE … NOBODY AT ALL.

    37. Are we forgetting something? Nicki Minaj’s Pink Friday, which is still #78 on Billboard? You mention Z-Ro and 116 Clique, but not Nicki?

    38. Ended listening Phonte more than Cole… but I like both. No need to compare.

I suppose I’m more into Phonte’s content. Lyrically. You know, grown man shit.

I’m 13 tomorrow, so you know, gotta start paying them bills.
