JAY-Z-Produced Western ‘The Harder They Fall’ Gets 1st Netflix Trailer

JAY-Z is making major moves in the film industry. On Thursday (June 25), Netflix released the first trailer for The Harder They Fall, an upcoming Western movie that’s executive produced by Hov. The film boasts an all-star cast including Idris Elba, LaKeith Stanfield, Regina King, Zazie Beetz, Delroy Lindo and Jonathan Majors.

The synopsis reads, “When outlaw Nat Love (Jonathan Majors) discovers that his enemy Rufus Buck (Idris Elba) is being released from prison he rounds up his gang to track Rufus down and seek revenge. Those riding with him in this assured, righteously new school Western include his former love Stagecoach Mary (Zazie Beetz), his right and left hand men — hot-tempered Bill Pickett (Edi Gathegi) and fast drawing Jim Beckwourth (R.J. Cyler)—and a surprising adversary-turned-ally.

“Rufus Buck has his own fearsome crew, including “treacherous” Trudy Smith (Regina King) and Cherokee Bill (LaKeith Stanfield), and they are not a group that knows how to lose.”

No release date has been announced yet, but the movie is set to arrive in 2021.

The Harder They Fall director, Jeymes Samuel, previously directed JAY-Z’s 10-minute short film for “Legacy” off his 2017 album, 4:44. The pair also collaborated in 2013 on The Great Gatsby: Music from Baz Luhrmann’s Film, where JAY-Z served as executive producer for the soundtrack album and Samuel was music supervisor.

Known as The Bullitts as a musician, Jeymes Samuel featured on Jay Electronica’s “Run & Hide” off his long-awaited Act II: The Patents of Nobility (The Turn) album that was released in 2020 and later removed from TIDAL.

Elsewhere, JAY-Z is producing a Netflix thriller called Forty Acres that’s described as a cross between Get Out and The Firm. In addition, he’s executive producing six-episode ABC series Women of the Movement about Mamie Till Mobley, the mother of Emmett Till who devoted her life to seeking justice for her son after his 1955 killing in the Jim Crow South.

    1. When it’s an all white cast it’s racist though, right? I didn’t see one Latino, Arab or Asian in that trailer. I guess racism is OK?

      1. How about watch the movie first before bring up racism. Trailers don’t show the entire crew and cast….. duh

      2. Nobody calls movies like “The Assassination of Jesse James…” or “3:10 to Yuma” “racist”, so wtf are you even talking about? You just had to project your little inadequacies onto others, huh? Figures. That “white fragility” in full effect. You creatures can’t help yourselves. I get it.

    2. dude saw black leads and his brain froze .He completely ignored all the white people .There are at least 10 in the trailer

    3. Jay-Z is an ex-crack and heroin dealing a$$hole turned SJW/ He shot his own brother, sold crack to his Moms, and turned his back on all of his childhood homies and ex-Roc-A-Fella business associates.

      1. He’s married now with kids and moved on with his life. I wouldn’t say he turned his back on his homies. It’s hard to be around the same people constantly for 20 years, labels don’t last forever. Jay Z did what was best for him and Beyonce. He can’t control what happens to old friends their all middle aged now.

    4. I here people always talking negative about Jay. Not a fan of Jay, but I respect the hustler mentality he has. People who say he did his homies wrong I have to laugh at that, you have to move away from certain people to attain a certain level of success. Jay is playing chess not checkers, if that goes over your head that’s because you are playing checkers.. lol

    5. This looks wild. Should be pointed out for those who don’t know that these “characters” are all based on real people. Bass Reeves, Cherokees Bill, Stagecoach Mary–all actual, historic figures.

I’m guessing they’re gonna take some liberties with the facts considering this is a movie, but it’s pretty cool to see overlooked black legends getting their stories told through a major distributor like this.
