9th Wonder Defends New School Rappers Against Criticism From Old Heads

9th Wonder doesn’t see a problem with the new generation of rappers and he took to Twitter to defend Lil Yachty, Lil Uzi Vert and Kodak Black against recent criticism.

Lil Yachty has been the largest target lately as he was the butt of a joke from Pete Rock and also received criticism from the likes of Anderson .Paak after he said he wouldn’t be able to name five songs from Tupac or The Notorious B.I.G.

Kodak Black also received backlash after he named his recent mixtape Lil B.I.G. Pac, comparing himself to the rap greats.

“I ain’t trippin that some kid can’t name Biggie and Pac songs..u gotta check the kids background and upbringing before you judge,” the Jamla leader writes in a series of posts.

9th Wonder says that his experience as a college professor has helped him understand the generation gap that creates the perspective of today’s teenagers.

“Just have the conversation. It’s starts there. U can have that convo with a kid….” he continues.

    1. 9th wonder is a producer so I think his opinion is way more openminded then a MC. A producer can make a MC or break a MC and I think that’s what a lot of this “mumble” trill type of rap music banks on. 9th himself had a skit on the Little brother album highlighting this.

    2. Even though I’m not on the same page with 9th, he does have a compelling argument. On another note, did anyone notice how Bun B hasn’t co-signed any new rappers lately? I remember from the late 00s to the early 10s that he co-signed damn near every new dude that stepped on the scene, from Soulja Boy to Drake to Waka Flocka, wack or not, and even did songs with most of them. He hasn’t spoken about anybody from the recent wave of rappers or did songs with any of them. Kinda strange, or maybe he has somewhere, but I just didn’t see it.

    3. Hate to sound old but these new dudes are wack. Period! The reason why MC’s were great in the 90’s was because you didn’t want to be looked at as a wack MC. Your pen had to be sharp. Pushing each other is what pushed the genre forward. If these new dudes keep getting consigned by the greats then Hip Hop is going to continue to down the toilet.

      1. Mainstream Hip-Hop got colonized by major labels and thus skills got replaced by hype. That’s why you have so many disposable rappers nowadays: natural selection doesn’t work in the industry where everything is artificial and forced. Too bad I’m listening to the music, not the gimmicks or the profit. 9th Wonder’s most points are valid, though he’s wrong on one account: no matter the context the standard [of being a great MC / rockstar] has to be skill-based (and thus gatekeepers of a genre shouldn’t try to exchange their credibility to a quick buck by endorsing clearly sub-par artstis). Hence the uproar behind mumble rap: we reached a such low point where one can legitimately question if the outcome qualifies as basic human communication or not.

        1. “…relying on talent, not marketing and promotion” KRS-ONE (1997) Until skill equals profit don’t expect much to change

    4. AND thats why the game uunfortunatelyis wack , no diversity no creativity no classic songs or albums..never thought back in the day it would be this bad but it IS
      peace im out

      1. Kodak blacks “institution” is a classic. Dude can really rap it’s just that his mainstream songs that people listen to are catchy

    5. It’s not about old music vs. new music. It’s about good music vs. wack music. And these mumbling ass rappers have no talent.

      1. Dont listen then bitch, can YOU rap? Are YOU in the studio? Ok then, no one is forcing you to like someones music so stop complaining like a broad and listen to whoever you deem good.

    6. If you dont like the current rap dont listen to the radio just that simple. There are different ways to listen and discover artist that fit you musical taste. Take the time to do some research use the internet as a tool for learning and not just to look at funny videos. Just like Rock n Roll Rap has many subsets and styles find your lane and chill its gonna be aight.

    7. hip hop is like football, you need to have the best players on the field, this generation has no real game and we aint gonna take that lac of skill and pretend is ok just cause they belong to a new generation, step your fucking game up if you wanna be real

    8. blame it on the social media cause it creates buzz for diferent reasons that are not related to the music by it self, back inthe days to get the attention you had to have good music but in this days you can be talking shit and acting like a fool thru the social media and the people will follow you and your music even if it sucks

    9. Never knew someone could bitch about something they have complete control over. If yall dont like a certain type of music then DONT LISTEN! At the end of the day the kids you people think are trash are going places and getting payed while yall mfs complain about music that you have a choice to jam or not.

    10. He has a point. The majority of People listening to internationally known rappers does not understand what is being said. Therefor, the music industry has to focus on sound. Lyrics are not important to sell good, it’s all about the sound. You can call those dudes wack as much as u want, but the sound is what makes them. The way they carry their voice makes the track more interesting to the new generation. Things change, just like music does. Think of tracks as a piece of art. The way you carry your voice is part of the art.

      Don’t like it? Don’t listen.
