Hip Hop Album Sales: Drake, YG & The Game

This week, Drake sits at the top spot of Billboard’s Top 200 albums chart for the eighth week in a row. YG and The Game debut on the charts repping Compton. Red Hot Chili Peppers sneak in front of Beyonce for the #2 spot in the debut week for Getaway. Chance The Rapper still charts strictly on streams with Coloring Book.

Drake’s “VIEWS” Are Still Higher Than Everyone Else’s

Drake’s reign continues as VIEWS charts at #1 for the eighth week in a row. According to Billboard, the LP is the fourth Hip Hop album to have this streak, tying Eminem’s The Marshall Mathers LP, and joining Vanilla Ice’s To the Extreme, which spent 16 weeks and M.C. Hammer’s Please Hammer Don’t Hurt ‘Em with 21 weeks at the top spot.

    YG’s Album Sales Are Brazy

For his sophomore effort, Still Brazy, YG lands at the #6 spot on the list. His debut LP, My Krazy Life, beat this position when it jumped out the gate at #2 when it was released in March of 2014. The Compton, California rapper pushed almost 40,000 units of Still Brazy as compared to 61,000 copies that My Krazy Life sold in each project’s first week.

The Game Holds It Down For Compton

The Game stays working as he released the soundtrack for the A&E documentary series, Streets of Compton. The project features many of the city’s finest including AD, Boogie and Problem. This album debuts at #24 with 15,519 units sold. A little less than the numbers for his The Documentary 2 or 2.5 projects, but still counting that paper.

    1. I think its safe to call fifth harmony a hiphop group. They do jazz hiphop like worth it to electrohop like work from home (second best song with work in its title, only behind the drake song called work). They also collaborate with dope artists like ty dolla sign, kid ink, and fetty wap.

      1. No, they’re a pop group period. They don’t do jazz hip-hop or electro pop, Worth It and Work From Home are all pop shit (both the latter song and Work, which is Rihanna’s song, not Drake, are ass), and they only work with wack artists (there’s nothing dope about Ty Dolla Sign, Kid Ink, or Fetty wap, who are all trash).

      2. Uhh, no. Hip-hop IS rapping and rapping is hip-hop. You bringing up Eminem is wrong since he’s a hip-hop artists only making hip-hop songs, not pop songs. Get your genres right.
Hip-hop: “Hip hop music, also called hip-hop or rap music, is a music genre formed in the United States in the 1970s that consists of a stylized rhythmic music that commonly accompanies rapping, a rhythmic and rhyming speech that is chanted.”

    2. Kevin Gates been doing 20-40k consistent for a minute whats his overall sales tho? Not 1 person cares bout streaming numbers but every week i see ppl asking for the total sales on here

    3. Not taking anything away from drake, its not the same thing…the MMLP would have been number 1 for literally 2 years under the current circumstances…getting credit for the same people streaming an album every week is lame. They need to fix the system.

      1. Not taking anything away from Eminem, however, if he wasn’t white, his album sales wouldn’t have been so strong. That system needs to be fixed.

    4. So in other words Hip Hop is so dead that the only nigga that can sell over 2 mil is Drake? Without Drake there is no hip hop…I know, I know you cats disagree but damn nigga’s cant even go gold anymore but this cat is number one for 9 weeks? He controls the game, rather you like it or not!
