50 Cent’s “The 50th Law” Read During Missouri Senate Filibuster

There is a heated debate in the Missouri Senate about county sales tax. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that democratic Senator Maria Chappelle-Nadal enacted a filibuster yesterday (April 25) in order to prevent a proposal from being discussed.

To create her 40-minute delay, the representative read 50 Cent’s The 50th Law. The 2009 book was a spin-off of Robert Greene’s The 48 Laws of Power. Greene helped the rapper write his book.

“It’s an opportunity to inspire hope,” the G-Unit general said at the time of its release.

In St. Louis County, the issue at hand is whether an amendment should be added to current legislation that would allow voters outside of St. Louis County to implement a sales tax of a maximum of half a percent. The money from the tax would help fund law enforcement.

There is much concern over law enforcement after, in 2014, Michael Brown was shot and killed by a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri and riots ensued. The tax increase would provide salary increases for current officers, fund training and equipment and create resources to hire more officers. Chappelle-Nadal says that this proposal is not the answer to the problems in the community.

“I do not trust our current leadership whatsoever,” Chappelle-Nadal says. “The people I represent have no confidence in this leadership.”
