50 Cent Explains How “The Massacre” Became Game’s “The Documentary”

50 Cent is celebrating the tenth anniversary of his sophomore album, The Massacre.

The chart-topping album sold 1.14 million copies in its first five days and included four top 10 singles in the U.S. But according to 50, The Massacre that fans enjoyed was a second attempt, since the original content of the album was given to another member of G-Unit – at the time.

In a recent interview with XXL, 50 says that the pristine project he crafted was given to Game and eventually became Game’s debut album, The Documentary.

“The first record that I wrote that was supposed to be my second album, I did it so fast,” 50 told the Hip Hop publication. “It was like three days, over a weekend. I recorded 12 records, but they were all two verses. They were incomplete songs and I knew I had to go back to come up with something to bring the lyrics all the way to standard, but I got what I was trying to get out. The concepts where there. The choruses were playin’. The outline for the album was there. But it had happened so fast that I was like, maybe I should just keep writing.”

After flying to Los Angeles, Interscope founder Jimmy Iovine asked 50 to work with one of Dre’s newer artists, Game.

“They said, ‘The kid can rap, but he’s not a great songwriter,’” 50 said. “When Jimmy called for me to do it I was like, ‘Alright, cool, I’ll fix it,’ and I gave it [to Game]. I only worked with him for about, I think, four days.”

50 appeared on three songs off Game’s album: “Westside Story,” “Hate It or Love It” and “How We Do.”

The latter, Fif says Dre fell in love with.

“He [Dre] was in love with ‘How We Do’ and I was like, ‘Yo, I’ll give him that if you put it out right now,'” 50 recalled. “And we just put it out. Put it together. Sold about five million records for Game’s album [The Documentary] and then I came back.”

The final version of Game’s major label debut album consisted of 18 tracks and it has been certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America [RIAA]. 50 Cent was credited on the album as the executive producer.

      1. the beats on the massacre were banging but 50 wasn’t saying nothing on it. every song sounded like he was trying to recycle a concept from GRODT

      2. LMAO GTFOH. GRODT is a classic hands damn. massacre is forgettable.
grodt is up there with the greatest albums, only difference is 50 could never follow it up bc his lyric game is small.

      3. “50 wasn’t saying nothing on it. every song sounded like he was trying to recycle a concept from GRODT” aka 50 Cent’s career.

    1. You know what!! I honestly starting to think 50 is trying to get Game mad again. When are these clowns gonna let that shit GO…. why are they still talking about what happen 10 years ago. That shit OLD… how many times do we have to hear 50 wrote game’s hits….. We all know that by now. Talk something else…..

      1. “why are they still talking about what happen 10 years ago”.. Can you not read bro? It’s the 10th anniversary of The Massacre and he was likely asked a question about it.. and why did you click on the article if you already knew what he was gonna say

      2. BigBoi!!! I click on it to see what he had to say, and I do know its his 10th year Anniversary. I knew what 50 was gonna say….. Game had his 10th year Anniversary in Jan. and he didn’t say a damn thing about 50. 50 could have easy skip that question and don’t even have to answer it.

      3. of course Game wouldn’t mention that another nigga wrote half his album on the 10th anniversary of it, he wanna take all the credit but without those 50 songs he wouldn’t be shit.

    2. “50 Cent is celebrating the tenth anniversary of 50 Cent’s sophomore album, The Massacre.”… Couldn’t you have just said his sophomore album?

    3. 50 Cent just blatantly lies and misleads people. He only gave Game the beats and hooks for 3 songs, but he acts like he wrote the whole album. I think he does that because Game was the most successful member, and he wants to make it seem like Game only sold well because of him. 50 Cent was on 7 songs on Mobb Deep’s album, but you never hear him claiming that album, because it was a flop. lol I’m not impressed

      1. but Game did only sell well because of him. he would have no career without 50 coming in and saving him. he would be bishop lamont status (who can also rap better than game by the way)

      2. he wrote more than three songs, those are the three hits game was with dre before 50 they was going to drop game before 50 so yeah he sold because of 50, his first three singles had fifty on it who else from g unit did that .when fif was signed to Em he only released one single with em for all of his albums.

      3. G-Unit were never quite the same after ‘300 bars’. Even die-hard fans know this. I’ve never heard an MC rip a whole group to pieces like that. All of that ”I am Game, I wrote his shit” nonsense 50 was talking was just silly emotions.
I like both of them, but 50 cent is an average MC who really got his mass success from shady/aftermath association, everyone who knows about emceeing knows when it comes down to it, 50 is no match lyrically.

      4. Dude! You clearly don’t know anything about that time period or hiphop. Games whole album sounds like 50. That was at a time 50 was rolling. Game was an industry guy. He needed ghost writers.

      5. “50 cent is an average MC who really got his mass success from shady/aftermath association,” Game is a below average MC who got his mass success from 50 cent/aftermath association and never had as much success again after leaving

    4. You see kids, unlike ross, 50 doesnt give a crap about anyone on his label. Ross now outsells 50. 5 no.1 albums compared to curtis measly 2

      1. Ross dont got 1 platinum album, no one on MMG does, 50 made sure his team all got to release debut albums and they all got plaques for them, Gunplay (Ross most loyal team member)is still waiting to put out his first album at the age of 36 while Wale bitch ass comes in and puts out 3 albums on mmg before the main goon gets 1.

      2. Tony Yoyo sold like 900k while Meek cant even go gold and Gunplay will only sell 10k if he ever gets that release date.

      3. Yayo went weak platinum. Disappointing since he was aided by Curtis the pop star. Gunplay is now don Logan and his album comes out in may.

      4. Legal troubles held up meek and def jam doesnt give a shit about mmg meaning gunplay got screwed. He would have 3 albums out by now if he was allowed to sign with atlantic.

      5. No bullshit. 50’s third album, Curtis literally outsold all of Ross albums combined. Let’s be real now. Hell, the Get Rich or Die Tryin soundtrack outsold all of Ross albums combined.

Ross doesn’t even have an album that’s platinum. MMG goes gold lol G-Unit goes platinum PERIOD.

      6. 1. No such thing as weak platinum. You sell a million, that’s platinum, end of story. 2. Selling a million is good, not disappointing. 3. 50 ain’t a pop star, he’s a hip-hop star. 4. Gunplay’s album is never coming out. 5. Legal troubles is no excuse for not releasing anything. 5. Def Jam obviously cares about MMG if they’re giving them any attention and they didn’t screw over Gunplay, he screwed himself over.

      7. 1. Obviously it disappointed interscope though. If Yayo is that successful, why can’t he get another album out? Meek mill is getting an album out this summer. 2. MMG held up so much better than g unit. Their EP’s are all flopping while MMG still commands high spots. Don’t even need to get into d12 as that fell the fuck off since members keep dying, flopped hard in their solo careers, or even both.

      8. 1. It didn’t disappoint Interscope. There’s many MMG members who haven’t released albums. 2. MMG is not holding up well, they keep flopping and taking Ls. G-Unit (whise EPs didn’t flop) and D12 did better than them.

      9. 1. Most of the MMG crew have been signed to the label for years. Stalley and Omarion flopped. 2. Gunplay’s album is not getting released at all. 3. G-Unit are able to release new material, they just released an EP. They didn’t even release an album yet and the music they released didn’t flop.

      10. G-Unit EP sold more than Triple Cs, who alongside Ross, aren’t the only ones signed to MMG for years.

      11. WHAT?? 50’s first and/or second album did the whole MMG rosters career. Yayo did 900K off the couch on probation couldn’t even go no where. Buck’s first went double platinum and second went platinum. Banks HFM platinum, RA Gold cause the leaked album, Beamer Benz or Bentley sold more as a single then ross last two albums! Ross has 4 number 1 albums and not one platinum. Who cares if you’re number 1 when 50’s CURTIS album is platinum 1.2 million. Don’t even talk about the G-Unit album beg fore mercy!! haha triple platinum

      12. Animal ambition 140,000 total sales INDEPENDENT
Hood Billionaire 180,000 total sales MAJOR (DEF JAM)
Ross probably made nothing he OWES def jam money
50 made between 700,000 to 1,000,000 just from sales

    5. hahaha, Games BEST selling album maybe, but any songs coulda been on that disc and it woulda sold.. THEY RAN HIPHOP for those Years…

Game has better songs and material since the departure from the unit.

    6. LMAO Game’s only dope CD.. and 50 wrote the whole thing… im from the west and this just proves game is a fucking FRAUD

    7. Obviously. Game’s albums have gotten progressively worse to the point that I don’t even check for him anymore.

    8. If The Massacre tracklist looked like this, it would’ve topped GRODT easily! what do you think?

      1. Intro
      2. In My Hood
      3. This Is 50
      4. I’m Supposed to Die Tonight
      5. Piggy Bank
      6. Outta Control
      7. So Amazin’
      8. Get In My Car
      9. Ski Mask Way
      10. A Baltimore Love Thing
      11. Ryder Music
      12. Gunz Come Out
      13. My Toy Soldier
      14. Position Of Power
      15. I Don’t Need ‘Em
      16. God Gave Me Style
      17. Hate It Or Love It Remix

      1. how so? There would be no Documentary without him. There would be no Game, no G-Unot, no black wall street, no blood money ent without 50

    9. Nowhere here does it say 50 wrote anything for Game…. He just gave him beats he didn’t use that happens within labels all the time lol… I honestly think 50 is just extremely butthurt over Games success without him but that’s what an insecure person does

      1. Even Game will tell you 50 made a bunch of those songs, hooks and all, they were finished songs before Game got them and changed the verses.

    10. Somebody tell 50 it wasn’t the songs, it was the co-sign, lol. It was the equivalent to what Lil Wayne did for Drake and Nicki Minaj at similar times in their careers. Doctor’s Dvocate was waaaay better anyway. Game has been steadily going downhill since though. So has 50.

    11. This article is a little misleading. For one, I think it should be noted that Game’s first 3 singles as an artist had 50 Cent on it. Secondly 50 wrote other records on the album like Special, Church For Thugs and selected the beat for Higher.

Idk, I think this article submlinally diminishes 50’s effort on the album. Good read though

    12. What 50 means is the beats & the hooks, we all know he didn’t write Game’s bars… It’s still old stale news!

    13. Not too many rappers can say they got bodied by Tony Yayo on their own song but Hurricane Game sure can.

    14. i love it how 50 cent takes credit for the documentry but every song on that album is california theme related. So many references to things only seen and experienced in la is mentioned in every song and someone from new york wants the crredit. 50 cent just wanted to defame the game thats all.

    15. Music is not all abt ur debut album, is how long u sustain in d music industry therefore I compliment game even after his debut album

    16. Jay-z wrote a lot dres stuff as well, 50 cent helped the game, there’s a lot of New York in LA hip hop history.
