Grammy Rap Committee Considered Not Having Macklemore & Ryan Lewis In Rap Categories

A person who attended a general Grammy committee meeting said that people on the rap committee didn't want Macklemore & Ryan Lewis in rap categories at the Grammys.

Most Grammy rap committee members felt that Macklemore & Ryan Lewis should not qualify for rap Grammys, according to a person who attended the general Grammy committee meeting, per abcnews.com.

The person, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said Grammy rap committee members said the duo shouldn’t be in the rap categories because of their success on mainstream radio and their pop appeal, the story says.

A vote among the general Grammy committee eventually said that the Seattle duo should be in the rap categories.

"It's not that they don't think he's a rapper," the person said of the rap committee's decision. "It's just that when you're trying to protect categories and someone has become popular, it should be judged as much...Where does their music exist? Who are their fans?”

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ The Heist is up for album of the year and the pair is nominated for best new artist. The pair is up for a total of seven Grammy Awards.

Macklemore said earlier this month that if The Heist wins Best Rap Album at the Grammys later this month, Hip Hop will be “heated.”

“We're up against Kendrick, who made a phenomenal album," Macklemore said. "If we win a Grammy for Best Rap Album, hip-hop is going to be heated."

Thing is, they didn't earn hip-hop's respect before the radio. And they still don't have hip-hop's respect so they better not have won.

none of those guys with the exception of French are even working with Macklemore. they dont need to say anything nice about him but they did.

Yeah like Nas fucks with Drake and Lil Wayne. They need a co-sign dummy.

I just read on this very website that The LOX, Styles P, Jadakiss and Sheek all fuck with and respect Macklemore. Talib Kweli had nothing but good things to say about Mack and Ryan Lewish. Big K.R.I.T. would probably say the same after Macklemore took him out on tour with him. Desperate for another hit French Montana even called him up for a single for his next album. Hip-Hop respects the hell out of Macklemore. Even if they don't enjoy they music they respect and appreciate the hustle and grind.

I recently re listened to The Heist and good kid m.A.A.d city and there is no doubt that good kid runs circles around the heist. Nothing about race or who each rapper is the quality of work from good kid makes it the far better album. Because of the year that Macklemore had I believe he should be at least nominated for rap grammys because he is a hip hop artist just view the work on its own quality not by who is more popular with the mainstream public.

The bottom line was mentioned: SKILLS it's all about SKILLS, and when Macklemore had SKILLS for 10 years they were not recognized. He didn't use GIMMICKS, he just made good music and finally he blew up. many rappers without skills get lucky, and many with them don't. When one does I won't hate on him/her at least untill I can listen to their library to know where they are coming from...

  • Nate

of artists out there and compare Macklemore he falls into the "top tier". It's not even about a Top 5 argument or best lyricist argument. It's about does he make great music, hip-hop background, paid dues, + points for being independent and having success without the major label deal backing, and for being original, honest, and REAL. He passes the tests. Compare rap to the NBA. Too many hypejob rappers (or basketball players from "name schools" don't make it or succeed in the NBA. I'm not going to argue about Mack being a "all-star" or MVP, but there is no arguing he gets a "spot on the roster". Just because you can name 5 players in the NBA doesn't mean you understand the sport. And just because you think Jay-Z has made a great album doesn't mean he is a "Top 5".. (very over-rated). Hay got his money but conversely Macklemore isn't without skills because he is white or because you didn't hear him because the rap media held out as long as possible until they couldn't deny his accomplishments. The saddest part is how the overwhelming "audience" that gathers once a artist has a hit or two DISTORTS his true image. Do you think that if Slaughterhouse (and Crooked-I) in particular blew up beyong moderate success to a HUGE POP following that Crooked-I would not be "real", or "true hip-hop"? See it's just about looking at the background, the true history, and not the hype. Nas, Crooked-I, Macklemore, it's all real hip-hop. If Kanye did not blow up and his first album was 808's (if he didn't put out the 1st three albums) his hybrid influences could force the Grammy "experts"-haha.. to also place him in another category. But the truth is, he DID make Garduation, Late Registration etc, and lucky for him he already had blown up so he is and always will be considered as "HIP HOP".. Yet listen to Yeezus and the argument can be made that he ventures outside the relative boundaries of HIP HOP much more than Macklemore... Don't believe me? Ask Lord Jamar.. wait a second he will be hypocritical and backpedal since he wants to be on the White vs Black thing... don't worry "Lord" there is plenty of space in rap for you. There is 100,000 artists out there. You just have to be one of them that has your product SELL.... if you really hate on artists not being within hip hop criteria/boundaries focus the microscope more on Kanye's recent efforts instead of being ignorant regarding Macklemore's background and playing a race card

  • Nate

For every good comment I read a idiotic/misinformed one so I can't cover every lame misconception about Mack but I'll just reply to one post here: ------------------------------ "Really? more hip hop than Slaughterhouse, Cunninlynguists, Vinnie Paz & Tech N9Ne, interesting" -------------------------------------- Those are great "hip-hop" examples. I own these albums. Good point. What most people who only listen to a couple albums a year think though is that Macklemore just "popped up" and made a savvy album out of the blue. Nope, he dropped music 12-14 years ago pre-dating Slaughterhouse, and C-linguist albums. This isn't a compare and contrast to those two examples, but the general point is when you take

I don't fuck with much Macklemore but I'll take him any day of the week over SID FROM ICE AGAE AKA WHACK MILLER. watch ice age and you'll see it. He's a sloth

  • @DaRealQuick

Jay-Z and Kanye West have won over 20 Grammies individually and have been nominated over 50 times. All of the wins and nominations were in Rap categories. Macklemore drops "The Heist" and he's up for Album of the Year. Yeah, that doesn't seem biased at all

  • MR. White

I can't believe how racist hip-hop has become. Not only did Mackelmore make the best rap album of the year, it was also one of the best selling. They bring rap music to people who generally don't appreciate it, and this is the thanks they recieve - people want them excluded from nominations. Other than Mack, the only modern day rapper pushing units is Em, but the assholes on this site won't aknowledge he's the greatest rapper of all the time and has done more than anyone to take rap into the mainstream. The racism Mack and Em face regularly disgusts me, because the same blacks who try to belittle them due to jealousy and bitterness play the race card at any and every opportunity. I hope Mack or Em win multitude of Grammys just to wipe the ugly smirk off these hating bastards' faces.

    • FOH

THEY DID NOT HAVE THE BEST RAP ALBUM THIS YEAR SO CUT THAT FUCKIN NONSENSE OFF. Yes it was one of the best selling rap albums this year but numbers has nothing to do with quality. And YES they did bring rap to people who usually dont appreciate it but also have no appreciation for the craft or culture. fake ass "rap fans" who no nothing and say stupid shit like macklemore had the best rap album of the year.

    • smh

      i hope your trolling.

    • A Person

You gotta be smoking crack to think Eminem is the GOAT. He is extremely dope, but you can't put him above Rakim, Nas, Kool G, Masta Ace, Black Thought KRS, Melle Mel, Grandmaster Caz or Kool Moe Dee, amongst others. Guru is also up there.

    • @DaRealQuick

This comment is so biased and misinformed that it doesn't even deserve a response.smh

you do realise that all these "in-depth" comments about these 2 dorks being gay, makes you guys look 10 times gayer than these guys right? lmao you seem to know a little bit too much information about homosexuals it looks mad suspect.

    • Gregg

Uh, I am gay & I click on these articles to support gay music & talk to other homosexual men, why are you guys here?

    • Anonymous

right? like why even click on the article unless you're just looking to talk homo life shit with other guys

  • Dennis

I was having trouble figuring out what these 2 are twinks or bears, I believe Macklemore's a bear. You see, some gay guys are twinks and other are bears. This gay guy's a bear. A twink is small and slender, like Lewis, I'm still wondering if a twink can be a top or is that reserved for bears? I'm sure there's a great deal of switching back and forth but I think more often then not bears are tops, unless they happen to be power bottoms.

    • Charlie

LMAO! Why don't I strap on my job helmet and squeeze down into a job cannon and fire off into Jobland where jobs grow on jobbies.

    • Mac

I agree Macklemore isn't too muscular & would be a bear, Lewis is not hairy enough, he's smooth he'd be a top, that's for sure.

    • Anonymous

wow we got an expert on faggots LOL funny cause you coming off gayer in that 1 comment than Macklemore and Ryan Lewis did in that 1 song about gay rights they made

  • Logic

kendrick lamar steals music concepts like the rest of the talentless mainstream. https://soundcloud.com/logicinthechi/control-prod-by-azbeats This one of the ideas of ours he stole with Small sean and the other rapper on the song. Who is small sean on the track of theirs saying rap slow? on the new song with dre who from chicago is kendrick lamar claiming he pimps? Logic in the Chi is whose image He will continue to try to steal. I don't mind admiration just credit for concepts.

  • P

the best rap album 2013 is def albert einstein from alch & P or the rugged man's legends never die... but yeah they pick kendrick cole and shit like that i don't understand it =(

    • Anonymous

Rap is the only category in the academy that only focus on what's popular about it and not the purest form of it and all of it should be considered just like they do with jazz, classic, country, or rock where not only the popular acts get a nod but their most skilled performers are also acknowledged and we know most popular =/= most skilled.

    • fuccya

Coz its popular, and thats all that matters to them. i mean you really think the whole ceremony crowd would dig underground raps? They came for pop music and rap grammy category is just for show, if there were no such thing as pop-rap there wouldnt even be such category.

  • Evil Genius

We are at a point were Rap has evolved to many different styles and forms just like Rock and Roll. To me there are a whole lot of artist who claim being a rapper but do a lot more singing in there music. Personally i don't think Drake is a rapper his albums aren't rap there are rap elements but its not 100%. Drake has said himself that he would never make 100% rap album which to me isn't Rap! Obliviously Macklemore & Ryan Lewis have a fan base they didn't pull a Jay-Z and buy a 1 million albums . If you dont like there music guess what there are other form of rap. This isn't the 90's Rap isn't street anymore its global and its commercial.

  • LORD JAMAR

which one is the bitch ? i'm guessin Faglemore. So that makes his boyfriend Ryan the butch of the relationship. Faglemore = bottom Ryan = top for you simple minded black folk here, these men are homosexual lovers.

whole lotta repressed homos running into every macklemore article they see to talk gay shit with other gay dudes online LOL

    • Dennis

Yeah, he's a power bottom, the power bottom is actually generating the power by doing most of the work. Speed also has everything to do with it! You see, the speed of the bottom informs the top how much pressure he's supposed to apply. Speed's the name of the game.

    • d

I think that Ryan is a bit of a power bottom. He generates thrust from beneath Macklemore but he's still the receiver.

  • Crip4Life

Hip Hop started in the streets and it will forever be in the streets, the fact of the matter is. Nobody in the streets is listening to mackelmore, only kids from the burbs. I ain't feelin his album, i don't care how lyrical he is, it's fuckin wack in the streets. Only people in the urban community (not suburban ) should have say to what is dope hip hop and what isn't! Kids from the suburbs tend to think just because a rapper is "lyrical" that makes them great! 2Pac , Dmx, Eazy E, and many many others weren't the most complex rappers but they are more legends, why? Because they kept it street. These underground, and lyrical cats can rhyme as many words out of the dictionary that they want and it is still wack in the streets why? Wack subject matter, wack beats, nobody wants to listen to any of that. People wake up, street hip hop (biggie, 2pac, big l , 50 ) any rapper that reps the streets, YES even Jeezy will have more respect than these lyrical cats, because hip hop IS the streets, and if the streets aren't feelin it, than it doesn't matter how versatile you are, wack is wack no matter what!!!!!!!!!!

    • Anonymous

what a moronic comment. no one cares what a bunch of bums in the street are listening to. they dont buy albums so they dont dictate who wins the awards

    • evil genius

@Crip4life The rappers you mentioned were considered gangster rappers. Guess what there are more forms of rap than gangster rap and everybody who listen to rap doesn't listen to gangster rap. If that's the form you like then that's cool but even in the 90's there was more than gangster rap.If you are truly into Hip Hop culture then you cant be close minded and listen to only one form up rap.

If Macklemore didnt pander to the hipster and gay audiences with his two big releases, he would still be posting his Soundcloud on hip hop boards, beggin dudes to check his shit. His gimmick has allowed him to leapfrog the biggest obstacle > skills! And thats why I think a lot of hip hop heads are annoyed by him. Yes, Rakim, E-Rule, Nas and co. are virtually ignored while this clown gets praised, and thats not right.

  • Anonymous

Fuck that shit. they played my nigga Cole with BORN SINNER. plus its easy to see who should win: KDOT'S GKMC!!! EASY

  • Toni

I'm glad they are in the Rap Category... I mean come on this duo is not pop music... I've been living in Seattle since 1998, and I've seen Macklemore peform numerous times back in the day.. I've even got footage from a New Year's eve fan show he did in a little hat shop on the Ave.. He's always had a different style about him which draws in people, but don't get it twisted he's a rapper by definition, and deserves to be in the running for a grammy.. They act like the duo had some huge record label backing them and throwing them into mainstream.. Get outta here! They had to work hard to get people in big cities like L.A. to play their music. Yea so what they are on Main Stream Radio.. So is Kendrick Lamar.. So is Drake.. So is jay Z.. So is Eminem.. what of it! an just like all of these artist they started form the bottom.and now they're here... and are just as deserving to be in the rap category for the Grammys.

    • Desperado

  • DA BIG HOMIE FROM LA

Macklemore is exploiting social issues and the gay community to profit. Rappers dont come out of nowhere like that without substantial backing from the music industry. When has corporate music ever wanted good messages to be released through music? Its more about pushing a liberal agenda and trivializing hip-hop with songs like Thrift Shop which shows how insensitive he is to people who actually rely on thrift stores due to low income!!!!

    • Anonymous

"Macklemore is exploiting social issues and the gay community to profit. " How is that any worse than exploiting your own people and glamorizing drug dealing and violence like so many rappers do. Many who never lived that life at all, cough*rickross*cough.

    • Anonymous

your a dumbass. although your philosophies about corporate music are correct you should do your research on macklemore before throwing him in there because to someone who has followed his and many other independent artist careers for years you just sound ignorant and hating. Thrift shops are the shit. im broke on foodstamps and im not offended i think the songs ok and the videos funny. stop being such a pussy.

  • jalen34

Macklemore and Kendrick shouldn't even be in the same category.

  • jalen34

Rap albums that go pop are never nominated for best pop music awards. Eminem lost album of the year when he was at his most successful to a band that nobody ever heard of. Kanye lost album of the year in one of his biggest years to a jazz album. The people who give the awards are never fair to hip hop music so why should hip hop go out of its way to be extra fair to pop rappers?

    • Andrew

Im white and there is no way The Heist is anywhere near as good as Good Kid, m.A.A.d City is. They make a great point because the lane that his music is popular in is mostly if not all pop. They need to protect their genre when a more popular artist with work that is not that great will win a award over a less popular one in the mainstream. Nothing about race I feel the exact same way about Flo Rida as I do about Macklemore.

    • Camaro434

"racist black people." Wow. Really? Because you REALLY think that he should beat out Kendrick for best RAP album? This is the best rap category, not the best pop category. I am black and I totally hate the racist shit both ways, but lets be real, this would be some WHITE bullshit if they win.
