This week, Slept-On But Dope features artists from Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia, respectively.

Oddisee examines Kanye West and Jay Z’s place in the world, while Scoe teams with Xzibit for a soulful gangster gem.

Oddisee – “Yeezus Was A Mortal Man”

While Kanye West may “get the most press” regularly, Oddisee certainly deserves some here. His track, “Yeezus Was A Mortal Man,” is one sure to catch some who slept on it off-guard. “I know that Yeezus was a mortal man,” Oddisee raps on the track. “And, Hov ain’t Jehovah, just a normal man / And, we all lambs to the slaughter / That all die, but some die harder / Which one is you?” Outside of name-dropping, the track is a barrage of clever, thought-provoking and insightful rhymes. “Out of trouble and on the hustle where I be at,” Oddisee spits. “I live within the jungle and on the humble the silent cat / The louder the lion, the louder the lyin’.” Perhaps Oddisee stays out of trouble, but this track remains to stay in the spotlight. – Andres Tardio (@AndresWrites)

Scoe f. Xzibit – “They Ain’t Ready”

Formerly known as Roscoe, Kurupt’s younger brother Scoe has been working behind the scenes the last several years, writing for Dr. Dre’s Detox and a handful of high profile artists. With his just-released Tha Influence street album, the Philadelphia native shows that his skills remain razor sharp. On the collection’s “They Ain’t Ready,” Scoe flows smoothly over Nottz’s hypnotic, soulful beat. The DPG member recounts coming up around Snoop Dogg and the rest of Tha Dogg Pound. Scoe does a nice job blending punchlines into this look into his life with some of the most popular rappers on the planet. Xzibit kicks in on the chorus, adding a husky vocal presence to the cut, which signals Scoe’s return to the spotlight. – Soren Baker (@SorenBaker)
