Hip Hop Album Sales: The Week Ending 11/4/2012

Meek Mill's "Dreams & Nightmares" does nearly the exact same chart position and sales figures as Wale's "Ambition" one year ago. Sean Price's "Mic Tyson" is his best-charting work to date.

As predicted, Meek Mill scored a Top 3 for his solo debut album, Dreams & Nightmares. The Maybach Music Group member has had a benchmark year in a career the spans the better part of a decade. This week also brought Tech N9ne's latest digital project to the charts, timed specifically to release at Halloween week.

The HipHopDX guest editor last week, Sean Price, received his highest charting solo effort to date, in a career that spans nearly 20 years. Mic Tyson is Sean's third solo album, in between a lengthy career with Heltah Skeltah and Boot Camp Clik.

Two final additions to the charts came by way of emcee/singer-turned pop culture sensation, Cee Lo. Although the Goodie Mob member has been in the headlines recently for alleged sexual misconduct, his Christmas album, Cee-Lo's Magic Moment, appeared in the Top 100. Lastly, veteran Oakland, California duo The Coup returned with their first album in near five years. Sorry To Bother You featured Boots Riley and Pam The Funktress working with Killer Mike and others, after tenures with Galactic and Street Sweeper Social Club. The former Wild Pitch Records sensations appeared at #194.

Meek Mill Reached His Dreams

As last year's MMG redefined Wale and his sound, 2012 has been a formal introduction to Meek Mill. The Philadelphia, Pennsylvania emcee's aggressive style dates back to dozens upon dozens of local mixtapes in the mid-2000s. After a brief tenure with T.I. at Grand Hustle Records, the dirtbike-riding emcee has come into his own under the business and tutelage of Rick Ross.

Dreams & Nightmares features the MMG crew, along with Nas and Drake. The latter is featured on controversial single "Amen," which has been a stand-out single in recent months. The album's deluxe edition also features "Burn," another popular hit featuring Big Sean. Both singles curiously appeared on Meek's free May mixtape, Dreamchasers 2. Meek's debut is within 1,000 units and received the same charting position as band-mate Wale's Ambition one year ago.

Sean Price Comes Back Like Mike Tyson

Sean Price had a career week with his third album, Mic Tyson. The Brooklyn, New York Rap vet's latest features production by Alchemist, 9th Wonder and Stu Bangas. Appearances include B.K. undergroup Hip Hop mainstays like Ill Bill, Torae and Pumpkinhead too.

The album sold nearly 7,000 copies, giving Sean the first Top 100 solo album of his career. Not since 1998's Magnum Force with Heltah Skeltah, has Sean Price performed this strongly on the charts. His rhyme partner, Rockness Monstah (f/k/a Rock) was not featured on Mic Tyson.

    • ETK

lol nigga it was free you seriously expect datpiff numbers to reflect album numbers? you can have the hottest mixtape on the circuit, won't reflect shit bout your album. and btw, 160k is a lot today. these hood rappers aren't touching them Taylor Swift Rihanna sales

    • Anonymous

no it's because MMG pays sites like datpiff and worldstar to bump up their views and downloads so their artists seem bigger than they really are

    • nobody

because people arent going to buy your music if you constantly give it away for free. that and the fact that no one wants to hear 60mins of music from him. its only so many bottles you can pop...heauxs you can smash, and niggas you can shoot.

  • Anonymous

just goes to show dat piff numbers are completely bogus

  • Anonymous

Just shows you what a little marketing can do for your first week numbers, the BPR's have spoken with his Mic Tyson debut, good work for an emcee on a independant label without the budget of a commercial rapper like Meek or any YMCB/MMG corporate slaves. P!

  • Anonymous

and game think he a hot artist hahah

  • Anonymous

Those numbers prove Meek is all hype. Give him one more album and he's finished.

  • Anonymous

There is NO Way in hell Kendrick is movin these type of numbers, Aftermath buying 75% of those records and u dudes know this!!

  • Me

and btw hip hop fans dont support their artistes noone goes platinum that easily now with all the technology allowing us to download the album free online.. Kdot album selling 250k while Taylor swif selling a milli ..where are the hip hop fans man..WHERE THE FUCK ARE THEY..BUY THE ALBUM IF U WANT YOUR ARTISTES TO DO THE NUMBERS!!!

    • Sam Snead

co-sign there is 5 oe less albums a year that are even worth 45-60 mins of my time now

    • Me

My theory is if you don't support good music they will stop making it. Unfortunately that means only 2 or 3 purchases a year.

    • Fish

an artist going platinum makes NO difference to anyone other than the artist. If Kendrick sells a million, i get nothing for that, so please explain why i should give a quarter of a fuck how many units ANY of them move???????

  • The B

Sean Price got a solid ass album tho. I wish artists like that could sell more, but I don't think he gives a fuck one way or the other.

  • Me

ok my review..GKMC no doubt the best album on the list..From start to finish..Dreams and Nightmares wasnt nothing shy of his mixtapes with the exception of tony story or whatever..i dont consider that an album.just another mixtape..not hating.. cruel sumer was also a great album right after KDOT..idk how 2chaiz reached up there..That was me hating.. Dont care abt the others. • Mr Offiicial

Cruel Summer rick ross gfid dreams and nightmares kendrick lamars gkmc most overated albums out.. imagine if they had no promo

  • lol

Gotta love how everyone gets so insulted and/or excited about sales and shit, but when it comes to debating great underground artists like tech 9, chino xl, rakim, etc blind fans look to their sales and say they suck, and when it comes to huge successful lyricists like Eminem, Jayz , Kayne, Nas, ect they "suck" for being mainstream and that sales dont matter...fuck sales, dont adjust your opinion based off fucking numbers on a chart, and ENJOY THE MUSIC IF IT IS GOOD

  • gh

cee-lo fucking FLOPPED. that's being on NBC biggest show. NBC is getting ready to END cee-lo after he drugged some chick and raped her. they aren't going to back their monkey on this. nobody wants christmas tunes from a fat sellout rapist that used to rap. meek mil did that with all the promo in the world because he's a no talent loser with no charisma. rap music is over.

  • TDE...&...ROCNATION

So much for having 3 million downloads on datpiff, just goes to show you that his fans don't really support him. BTW haa.haaa

  • pete

meek mill is a fool,he had a good buzz back in november 2011 he could have dropped his album in january 2012,his buzz died n kendrik lamar overtook his buzz

  • YEBO

165K IS VERY GOOD DEBUT FOR SOMEBODY LIKE MEEK MILL. WHICH NEW RAPPER OUTSOLD HIM? EVEN 2 CHAINZ WITH HIS CLASSIC DEBUT WAS HYPED ALL OVER THE MEDIA AND SOLD LESS IN HIS FIRST WEEK. WACK ASS KENDRICK LAMAR SOLD MORE, JUST BECAUSE HE DICKRIDES DR. DRE AND ALL THE WESTCOAST ARTIST ALL THE TIME AND HE'S REALLY GOOD AT IT (SLAUGHTERHOUSE SHOULD'VE SOLD 800K IN THEIR FIRST WEEK, SINCE IT IS GROUP OF FOUR NIGGAZ SUCKING EMINEM'S COCK). BESIDE OF THIS, MEEK'S ALBUM IS REALLY GOOD, MAYBE NOT AS GOOD AS HIS MIXTAPES, STILL ONE OF THE BEST ALBUMS OF THE YEARS AND CLASSIC DEBUT FOR CLASSIC RAPPER WHO WILL BE REMEMBERED IN TIME. DAMN, IF HE AND 2 CHAINZ RAPPED BACK IN 90'S, OVERRATED BIGGIE AND PAC WOULD BE STILL SERVING THEM SOME BIGMACS.

  • Anonymous

Kendrick Lamar - good kid, m.A.A.d. city = over rated album of the year. Skyzoo - A Dream Deferred = under rated album of the year.

  • d3

the fact that meek mill's d&n is on pace to sell more records than Good Kid maad City is a shame to see. ppl today wouldnt know hip hop if it smacked em square in the face

    • Prengo

Woa. c'mon bruh all albums drop atleast 70% after 1st week which means meek 2nd week is gonna be around 40,000 which means he'd prolly just barely reach the 200,000 mark in 2 weeks so chill with all that "catching GKMC #s" BS

    • Anonymous

meek wont even hit 242k after 2 weeks

    • d3

word he did 242,000 first week, but im sayin if meek has the same numbers in week 2, he'd have around 330,000 total sales (as opposed to kendrick's 304,000 after his second week).. yeah obviously unlikely to generate the same number of sales back-to-back weeks, but still way too close if u ask me. GKMC should still be ahead of d&n regardless of this being its first week. not calling that shit a "classic" yet cuz thats for the lames to do, but the shit is real good, high quality HIP HOP music, and that shit meek put out is the same garbage people been puttin out for years now. same shit. same boring ass shit for motherfuckers with low expectations.

    • Anonymous

yeah where did u get that from? meek not touching kendricks numbers

    • kidmex

It's actually not gonna sell more then GKMC.

    • Anonymous

?? GKMC outsold D&N first week...

  • Anonymous

    Macklemore is amazing!

  • Eye Control

Kendrick dropped the album of the decade, I already heard it 10 times and yes it's a masterpiece. But I'm still trying to figure out the meaning behind his album title, I think he has two A's in the title to represent a metaphor for his flow, a Double A battery (I think Duracell) because Kendrick has a lot of energies and can rap for a long time before he runs out of breath. He can hold a lot of breath for someone who smokes a lot of weed lol. I definitely appreciate the High Power movement, I think it will help legalize weed. Section 80, Control System, and now Good Kid, Kendrick has dropped classic after classic. He really might be 2pac reincarnated

    • Anonymous

      Eye Control= I can troll

    • Vern

Anon, you got trolled man. He obviously ain't serious. ''Eye Control / I Can Troll''. Really man.. Double A Battery? lol cmon son. Also Hiiipower doesn't rly have anything whatsoever.. to do with smoking week bruh.. he's just plain trolling.

    • Anonymous

Ok, the name of the title means: "My Angry Adolescence Divided" or "My Angels on Angel Dust". Kendrick explained this already. ANd he doesn't smoke a lot of weed, in fact if you listened to "good kid, M.A.A.D city" 10x, you'd know why he avoids it. But yeah, I hope somehow the HiiPower movement affects the legalization of marijuana, that would be awesome.

  • Anonymous

mmg buys their own albums to raise the sales? who else would spend money on that crap

  • Meek

rick ross gonna hold me back rick ross gonna hold me back

  • yardley moise

damn meek ???? onlt 165K?????? smh for all that hype?, smh I am a true fan, but the Dream Chaser mixtapes pt 1 and 2 was better than the album, and Tony Story part 2 was a failed!!!!! part 1 was a classic, SMH fuck u officer ricky!!!! this is all ur fault

  • Anonymous

If anyone wants to clown MIC TYSON, in the Tampa/St Pete area, which is a few million people, exactly ONE Best Buy even stocked the fucking thing... Probably NO Targets... And yeah, there's some indy stores but compare that to the saturation of fucking LAUGHTERHOUSE (which sits, unsold, everywhere)...

165,000 for 1 of the supposedly hottest in the game is terrible and people cant blame it on Sandy cos Kendrick still moved 63,000 Jay Z dropped his classic on 9/11 and people could have still copped it on itunes dude has records and videos all over the place all the hype cosigns big name features lol MMG is so smoke N Mirrors its all fake paid for hype They run the internet but in the end they keep loosing. Congrats to Kendrick for moving 304,000 and getting great reviews which much less hype and promo and cosigns and big name features
