Famous Dex has been sued for $49,000 by a man who claims the rapper stole his watch — but the judgment is currently in limbo due to “defective” documents.

According to the Los Angeles Superior Court docket, which has been obtained by HipHopDX, Michael Francati sued the “Hoes Mad” rapper all the way back in April 2021, claiming that he and Famous Dex knew one another “socially” back in March 2021.

Francati claimed that he wanted to show off his watch on Dex’s Instagram account, because “I thought it was a good opportunity to have my watch viewed by a large crowd because Famous Dex is a well-known rapper and has a massive audience on Instagram,” per the court documents.

However, after the pair agreed to meet at a smoke shop in Van Nuys, CA, Dex (real name Dexter Tiewon Gore Jr.) allegedly drove off with the watch, then claimed he was robbed at gunpoint.

Though Francati initially sued Famous Dex for more than $170,000 — including more than $90,000 for compensatory damages — Judge Teresa A. Beaudet refused to honor the request, claiming that Francati provided “no additional evidence regarding the asserted value of the watch” or “the extensive emotional distress, anguish, and anxiety [he] has suffered,” per the court documents.

Additionally, though Judge Beaudet ruled in favor of Francati back in March 2023 — claiming that “Plaintiff has sufficiently supported his request with the submitted declarations and evidence” — she did not grant Francati’s petition for a default judgment because there were “defective” documents (that is, improperly filed and filled out). Francati was then ordered to re-submit the corrected documents so that Judge Beaudet could grant the order.

A hearing for an Order to Show Cause was scheduled for Wednesday (May 3). No decision has been made public as of yet. To date, Famous Dex has not participated in any aspect of the lawsuit, hence Francati’s request for a default judgment. However, it is unclear whether the hearing for the Order to Show Cause was brought by Francati or Dex himself.

Should Famous Dex be required to cough up the money, it certainly won’t make too much of a dent in his bank account, as he reportedly signed a $5.6million deal with 300 Entertainment back in March.

Dex flexed the alleged deal on Instagram, sharing a colorful photo of him lounging in the 300 Entertainment lobby reading a magazine.

“5.6m new deal today God is amazing,” Dexter wrote.

Famous Dex’s new deal comes as he plans a career rebound in the wake of his newfound sobriety. He celebrated five months of sobriety in June, which came after he underwent two stints in rehab for reported opiate addiction.

Dex’s rehab came after fans expressed distress at a series of videos on Instagram that seemed to show the Chicago rapper high and nodding off. He initially denied any reported drug addiction, telling his concerned fans to calm down.
