The Breakdown: “Are Rappers Keeping It Too Real?”

Is rap an honest account of what’s going on in an artist’s life? Or is it just entertainment?

    1. Rap is about one thing in 2017 – making labels money – a label will pull in an artist by giving them an advance as long as they sign the 360 deal – now the artist Has entered into a contractual obligation and the label now hold the cards (power) – at this point the label waves money in front of the artist and this acts like the carrot on the string in front of the donkey – the donkey clearly being the artist – being controlled by his contract – that’s why everything sounds the same and all content is so similar (pushing percs and xans on kids etc) – now let’s say you’re smart, like Russ for example – Russ makes more money than a lot of these puppet ass artists – you hear him talk about net profits over gross earnings – that means money he actually takes home – but they blackballed Russ forever because he’s too smart – and that’s just an example (I don’t even like Russ too much but I respect him 100%) – once you understand this you will understand why intelligent artists neveR get on but circus acts like cardi B etc do – dirty game

    2. NYC got some of the tightest gun laws: shyne, shmurda never had a chance in NY. They were done before it started!!!

    3. HHdX with all these question tackiness where te answer is an obvious NO. Dudes shooting each other several times and no one dies. Dudes wearing dresses. People writing rhymes for “top lyricists.” This new generation is PC, gay AF and a bunch of talentless mumble rappers. Who wants to hear a Future, Gucci and Drake freestyle. No one.

    4. The definition of “Real” is relative. You Can be a Nerd rapping about Dungeons and Dragons and be real. Being real means staying true to yourself and not being fake and pretend to be soemthing you not. Being Real is not always associated with negative things

    5. Its entertainment who they are on stage or screen is totally different from whom they are in their personal life problem comes in when you blur the line music careers and acting don’t last long any way reality will take over soon

    6. Turn on an old 89.9 Stretch and Bobbito WKCR show and forget these talent-less purveyors of mainstream drugs, death, misogony and ignorance ever existed let alone breathed on a microphone.

You used to have to seek out material with this type of subject matter, now It’s being blasted at the youth. Can’t help but think they’re is some kind of agenda.

    7. Last few years hip hop has shifted a lot to mumble rap and auto tune. It’s rare to see a lyricist and 90s rappers: Nas, Jay Z, Eminem are working on the last of their LPs. It’s a weird shift but Hip Hop has always been about The Youth and The Young Culture.
