X the last great from the golden age??? X was rapping for a while but the first time he really exploded on the scene was on Money Power Respect, his debut dropped in 98, to me personally he was along with Nas the best solo rapper from 98 to about 04, Nas kept going and stayed consistent, 04 seemed to be the year his Movie career slowed down also. Dmx is not one of the greatest rappers of all time he is one of the greatest artist of all time, their are other rappers that deserve to be in that category also, like Nas, Jay Z, Tupac, Bone Thugs N Harmony, Outkast, Common, Eminem,
Check out Xs’ first video “niggas up to no good” from 94 on youtbe.Do a video on Hiphop producers too who haven’t got their just props like Daz and KayGee. Also relook at Ma$es talent, though Puffy dumbed him down.
Fugees album “The Score” (1996) is one of my favorite albums from that era. “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill”, from 1998.. “By 2013, it had sold over 8 million copies in the US and over 19 million copies worldwide.” (Wikipedia). After that, i really have no clue. I reckon she was blackballed in the industry and had some sort of meltdown or some shit.
The Score is one of my favorite joints ever. She delivers one of the all time great rap performances. She’ll forever be loved for Miseducation which was one of the greatest ever, as repeck mentioned above. I have a hard time saying anyone with essentially an album and a half is a GOAT contender, though. Missy had a more impressive career to me.
Though i crack jokes (pun intended) about DMX drug problem i put mad respeck on his name. His first three albums i liked.. even the follow-up “The Great Depression” was aight. After that i kinda gave up on dude. “Get it on the Floor” was my shit though.
DMX is struggling wit doing the devils work and wanting to obey God’s words to come out of the devil control world of music, not many keep their sanity when they sign that contract thinking ok my talent will make me a star then find out all the foul things they have to do to become rich and famous and then the devil take it all back and most die broke, sad ending they all will face in the music business look at them from Chris Brown strung out to Kanye West losing his mind because of what the devil is taking them through !
X is just a good hearted person. He knows what’s right and you can tell if he could do it he would. He can’t get up. But this whole post is crazy talking about his addiction in the public eye and bringing it back into the light. Who are you to put someone’s personal business on blast and make it the damn headline of your site. Stay up x. We gonna love you know matter where your path takes you. We riding with you!
Nice comment from someone who simply read the headline. The majority the post talks about mental illness, which you would recognize had you actually read it. The video uses nothing but dmx interviews and talks about mental illness as a real issue plaguing minority communities, offering statistics on how it affects the black community. There isn’t judgment here. This isn’t dirt. This is light. There are so many people “riding” with X and millions in similar situations that would rather quietly watch these people kill themselves. Views like this are complicit to the carnage. If this conversation is the problem, I’ll be that. Hopefully, others will realize it’s OK to talk about these issues openly and that it doesn’t make you weak to experience these feelings and battle these demons. I’m sure X would agree. Watch him on Drink Champs. Watch him on The Breakfast Club. Watch him on any of these public forums. He can’t help but talk about it. He’s only talked about this in his music. That’s why we love him.
X’s first 3 albums might rank as the best 1-3 album run of any solo rap artist ever. I can bump all 3 straight through. Filled with bangers and street anthems.
Unique voice, the movies, singles that still get played on the regular (Party Up, RR Anthem, What’s My Name, etc)
Different style, but I see Weezy’s career being similar to his. DMX had the industry by the balls, but drugs took over. Lil Wayne is on the same path, it’s just taking longer.
Agreed. He’s definitely up there. Redman’s first three are amazing. kendrick’s first three too. Kanye of course and ‘Kast. X is definitely in elite company.
I grew up listening to dmx was 12 years old when I first heard him. I was in juvenile hall Stockton CA his music was like nothing I’ve ever heard before pure aggressive hardcore vocals mixed with sensational beats. It was like he was talking straight to my soul. He faded fast now i can’t believe he was even The same person.
First off, thanks for doing this and glad you are doing better after your injury. These breakdowns are now part of my Saturday highlights. About this post, I feel like the post wasn’t as cohesive as it usually is – it’s like you really wanted to talk about mental illness in the hip hop community (a very noble thing to do by the way, kudos) but then you wanted to use DMX to bring that point home. Unfortunately, the examples you gave of DMX’s ‘illness’ (or even ODB’s) weren’t really related to mental illness but to addiction. Aren’t those 2 separate issues? Or is one caused by the other? I don’t have the answer to these questions (in a Justin Hunte voice, haha). Really though, I also feel that the post didn’t give a really insightful look into the ‘fall’ part of DMX’s career because you sacrificed time you would have given to that bit to focus on talking about mental illness(which – I reiterate – is a good thing – just that here it was not smoothly transitioned to). I feel this is the same thing that happened with the Game post too. IT’s not such a bad thing, it’s just that the contrast in the topic and the subject matter is quite glaring in this particular piece. That said, I enjoyed this and will be recommending it to others. thank you.
Oh shoot!! Just read the piece about drugabuse.gov. My bad – I see why you equated mental illness with drug abuse. I wish that bit was made a bit more clear in the video though. My ADHD generation quicker to watch the video than read, haha. Still, I wish a bit more time was taken to dissect X the way you do other subjects or in its place, a post purely on mental illness. Splitting the two topics, when not done as masterfully as you do in other posts, can tend to confuse a viewer.
if you were going to mainly focus on mental illness why use a dmx headline? why not put kid cudi on it? who is currently dealing with mental issues and drug addiction. He’s an artist that had early success in his career and year after year you can tell his mentality has gotten worse and worse.. I don’t know.. i just think if you’re going to talk about X you gotta give him a real article hes a fuckn legend man..
right but my point was that they headlined the article to be about dmx but was really only about mental illness and drug addiction and I feel that who dmx is deserves more than that. If you want to talk about his downfall explain the parts of the illness and addiction and how they effected it and at what points in his career you can see it. Dive into the life of DMX.. Also i don’t think dmx is to be considered done at this point. I think talking about kid cudi who still has a lot to offer and is currently going through these things make the article more relevant if you wanted to just play on the addiction and mental illness. Also the headline stinks I would be happier if the article’s main headline was about drug addiction and mental illness and still had the parts about DMX in it..
I believe there should be a school that teach celebrities how to manage fame. DMX is very aware of his drug addiction, means what? He’s changeable. All he needs is a better a stronger entourage and sign off Def Jam
X put his foot on the neck of “Bling” rap and start brought back that NY grimey rap. Say what you want but he put NY back on the map after BIG died. Yeah Yeah I know people want to say Jay but DMX was what NY was about…being grimey as all get out. I had a homie that only listened to West and South music…DMX changed my homie for real. Dude had 2 number 1 albums in the same year. I was a Marilyn Manson fan also so when he had him on Flesh of My Flesh I flipped out!! X be on the track growling and barking and everything. I remember The Game saying that X was our Hip Hop version of Michael Jackson some years back and to think about it he’s right…we’ve seen the ups and down of this man and he keeps fighting. Keep your head up X!!
DMX couldn’t have been any bigger had he been sober when he came out, and his career would have tanked had he won his battle with drugs and alcohol… People love fallible artists, human artists, artists they can touch, artists they can feel. That’s why as much as Jay – Z has all the accolades, even he knows he never truly hit it with the heart of the people like X did, because of that one fact. Jay was waaay too sophisticated, infallible, nothing could hurt him, and he did nothing wrong, made all the right moves. The masses associate with pain easily. Look at ODB, Kid Cudi, Eazy E, even Lil’ Wayne. If you’ve seen the Wu Tang Clan documentary, one of the affiliates muses on the notion, ‘so you gotta be high to drop some hot shit?’ So, it’s vicious and it’s venom, but it’s what the industry was built on. X is just its product. Of course the masses still love him, because he wasn’t afraid to be human, wasn’t afraid to be Earl, just like ODB wasn’t afraid to be Ason. Most rappers lock their darkest secrets in closets and spend their entire careers living a persona of a tough, untouchable guy. The masses love this because it helps to forget their own pain (think Will Smith: getting jiggy with it, the line about the cigar – cigar from cuba, it’s for the look, I don’t light it). X will go +platinum the second he releases a balanced project, why? Because the humans, that identify with him will buy it. The drugs were always going to take their toll on him. He’s been addicted longer than he’s been a rapper! So it’s in a day’s work. We the fans, pray for him everyday, that he doesn’t lose his life. But he is the last poster boy of ‘keeping it real’ ODB style, and we love that, sadly.
DMX is one of the greatest hip hop artist of all time in history. X-Baby 4 Life!!!! I’ve been a fan since ’97
Slippin’ will forever be one of the best songs in history.
Definitely.
Make a noise for God goddamit.lol

Great call on KayGee.
Also is Lauryn Hill a GOAT? where does she stand in hiphop history
Fugees album “The Score” (1996) is one of my favorite albums from that era. “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill”, from 1998.. “By 2013, it had sold over 8 million copies in the US and over 19 million copies worldwide.” (Wikipedia). Darkman X lips stay wrapped around that glassdick 24/7 smh
X left his spiritual side of life and become worldly DMX EASED GOD OUT,ego now look at him he must go back to his first love THE LORD pretty simple.
That’s a powerfully tragic thought.
Think Kanye losing his mind played a roll?

Yeah
X dropped 3 incredible songs this year. However, none of them received much attention. #Shame
MoE Wings was hitting!

If only you and the other writers were this active in the comments section when people catch all of your grammatical errors…..
The cover of flesh of my flesh blood of my blood isn’t grimy, he took it to a level beyond that. Vivid AF

The way this guy says “posthumous” is just absolutely ridiculous. Especially from someone that “writes” for a living. Get it together DX.
Addiction is a mother fucker………

Cudi’s ending is still rather undetermined and he took personal steps to get better. We all know X is done so a cautionary tale is neeeded.

He doesn’t keep his hair cut or give a fuck how he dressed.
What happened to this guy is unbelievable
There will never be another DMX. Hope he finds his way back.

wouldn’t really call it a fall of DMX. He put out plenty of classic albums, did major tours, and will always be one of the best ever
