    J. Cole takes a different twist on TLC’s “Unpretty” and even has the legendary R&B group on the track.

    1. This is the second official single. And a damn good one at that. Radio needs positive messages like this. Production is nice.

      Born Sinner June 18!!!

    2. Damn, that one dude posting that “fake tracklist” for Born Sinner is right so far. WTF is happening to the world haha

      1. right so far? this song has was announced a long time ago. its not hard to fabricate information based on information that has been available for a long time. stop being so gullible.

      1. So they have to change their band name because someone from their group died? Nitpickin son of a bitch. It’s a tribute to her that they’re keeping the same name. They’re not going to change it to TC, stupid ass.

This sounds like NOTHING else on the radio. It’s a breath of fresh air.

Like Cole said before, “sit around in middle class homes with computers on hating on the newest song” So keep hating, man.

      2. ^j.cole stans will never stop using that damn quote to try and put someone down and make themselves feel better whenever somebody doesnt like a j.cole song as much as they do. his critique of the song was not even close to hating. the only person hating is you.

    3. usually dont care for J.Cole but………Damn!!!! HArd Song! got to give credit when credit is due!

    4. Perfect modern day radio hit. Cole didnt dumb down his lyrics like he did on Work Out and Mr. Nice Watch. Looks like he finally found his lane when it comes to radio songs. Power Trip and now Crooked Smile. He’s got a hit here without changing his style of lyrics and flow. The choir part is dope. TLC feature will bring a lot of attention. The positive message is dope for a radio smash.

    5. Another good song but there’s nothing unique or special about it, it’s just okay. Beat sounds like a regular beat from the 2000’s. If you go back 10, 15 years you could find loads of songs like this. All of his music sounds outdated, he does nothing creative or innovative, he takes no risks. But of course the younger hiphop heads are going to like it because they just started listening to hiphop 2 years ago and they’ve never heard shit like this before. Songs like this have been done to DEATH. It’s sad that “normal” is now “exceptional” in this day and age. It shows you how much music sucks as a whole.

      1. HAHA, fuck outta here fam. This sounds NOTHING like the radio hits 10-15 years ago and sounds NOTHING like songs on the radio now.

Doesn’t take risks? Putting TLC on the hook is a risk. They’ve been out of the game for awhile and aren’t anywhere near as popular as they once were. Cole doesn’t throw Rihanna on a hook or Future on a hook like other rappers nowadays. You’re nitpickin, fam.

This song is a breath of fresh air. Production is dope and doesn’t sound dated whatsoever.

      2. ^ Yes, it does. This sounds exactly like a song from the early/mid 2000’s. And like HHDX said, TLC themselves did this concept already with “Unpretty”. There’s nothing unique about this and it does sound old. Don’t let you fanboyism blind you.

      3. Yeah, it’s Cole’s take on Unpretty…that’s obvious….embracing your flaws. But it doesn’t SOUND anything like it. You act like EVERY rapper has done a song like this. Artists can take on the same subject but do it in their own way. Lots of songs have the same theme. Seems like you’re just nitpickin for the sake of it.

      4. I completely agree with, Notimpressed. Cole is a great rapper no doubt, but he isn’t doing anything exceptional and awe-inspiring. All of his songs are pretty much on the same theme.

Take Kendrick for example, he is mad talented. Deals with diverse themes and got different voices and sonically is able to come up with much fresher music.

Take Yelawolf, dude has crazy flows and his raps have an IMAGERY that is sorely missed in today’s scene.

But then we have someone like Joey Badass, who doesn’t bring ANYTHING new to the table. He just sounds like a good 90’s rapper…

      5. yelawolf sold 2 copies of his album so he is out of the equation. joey badass has only one mix tape, how do you know he wouldn’t bring anything new as time goes by and he is a pretty good rapper. kendrick is a good rapper and so is cole. cole does every production on his album and still delivers. this is a pretty good song which will grow on people.and what do you mean by being innovative getting david guetta or featuring an euro tune on your song? sorry but thats not being innovative. if cole was to take such risk you guys will be the same to criticize him. cole is the new nas because if he does something poppy he gets criticized and when he does the normal thing he does he is boring. if u dont like his music go listen to kanye west he has the innovative euro feel in his songs leave coles song to his die hard fans, they are still gonna cop his album when its out.

    6. song is so cliche and boring. Cole isn’t creative. he just pretends to be a conscious, righteous, rapper because he doesnt know what else to rhyme about.

    7. solid track, great message. Disagree with the Eminem line. He didn’t sell just cause his skin was pale. If that were the case, why don’t all white rappers sell well? some people make excuses.

      1. He does sell because he’s white, ask eminem himself. “If i was black, i would have sold half” The other white rappers aren’t selling because they aren’t promoted that well/they’re garbage

    8. Easily the best “single” he’s ever had in terms of balancing quality and radio friendliness.

    9. j cole was on fire when he first came out, but dude is losing his shine fast. same old flow, nothing new. he has no personality when rapping. its like he just going through the motions

      1. Fuck outta here bitch nigga, just cause he doesn’t like this slow ass boring ass flow and boring beats means he likes that fuck nigga Chief Keef? Hell no, both are trash but at least Keef puts energy into his music unlike this boring ass clown.

      2. You are the typical mainstream fanboy. This shit ain’t boring. It’s a dope song. Kill yourself.

    10. yelawolf sold 2 copies of his album so he is out of the equation. joey badass has only one mix tape, how do you know he wouldn’t bring anything new as time goes by and he is a pretty good rapper. kendrick is a good rapper and so is cole. cole does every production on his album and still delivers. this is a pretty good song which will grow on people.and what do you mean by being innovative getting david guetta or featuring an euro tune on your song? sorry but thats not being innovative. if cole was to take such risk you guys will be the same to criticize him. cole is the new nas because if he does something poppy he gets criticized and when he does the normal thing he does he is boring. if u dont like his music go listen to kanye west he has the innovative euro feel in his songs leave coles song to his die hard fans, they are still gonna cop his album when its out..

      1. You sound young and brainwashed. David Guetta is not a “risk”, obviously. I’m saying he should actually be creative and try something new. Create a new style of beats, come up with more interesting concepts, invent new rapping styles, do something. All J Cole really does is follow the formula of the rappers he listened to in the mid 2000’s.

He is not the “new Nas” because Nas actually takes risks. Nas has songs were he tells stories backwards, talks about aliens, plays the part of a woman who has aids, acts as a detective who has to solve who killed hiphop, etc Nas is creative and deep, J Cole isn’t. He just does the same old dumbed down concepts of things he heard in the past and pretends to be a conscious rapper

      2. You sound like a hater. So if David Guetta was featured on this track you would appreciate it more? What else do u want from Cole. What new stuff do u want him to do sing a duet with Miguel and Mariah Carey. Cole is a lyricists so don’t expect that from him. This is a banging beat, legendary performance from TLC, nice verses from Cole. and what do you mean invent new rapping styles? You sound like u know nothing about rap?

      3. It doesn’t even make sense arguing anymore. It’s clear that you’re very close minded if you think hiphop can only be this or David Guetta/Marey Carey or whatever the fuck. This is the same reason why J Cole keeps doing these mediocre songs. He thinks the same way you people do. To him, his only options are to be “pseudo-conscious” or be a “pop artist”. He’s not creative enough to think outside of that box. He (and you) think too small…That’s why J Cole continues to be stay stuck in 2000’s doing dumbed down versions of old Kanye songs.

      4. @not impressed:Go kill yourself. You will never achieve half of what Cole achieved in life. This is a dude who graduated magna cum laude from college but still went out to do what he loved do. At the end of the day, this is good music; I’ll bump this shit in my car all day. And since you are that smart, you think outside the box, hit the studio and “invent” your own futuristic beat and way of rapping. Cole has creative raps, go check out lost ones where he rapped in third person, a dollar and a dream II. This is an excellent song, PERIOD.

    11. I love how if a hip hop song isn’t about “street life”, promoting hate, or reflecting the perspective of a chronic pessimist then it’s mainstream garbage by default. The beat and lyrics are solid, a legendary group is being paid homage by a “new school” emcee, and it has a positive message; something that is sorely lacking in the hip hop community these days. Some of you really need to open up your eyes and expand your perspective. Not everything has to be murder, drugs, bitches, and hate. And you people wonder why hip hop is still under attack these days. SMH…

    13. You people complain about everything. This song is dope, it has substance and positive. You all say he talks about the same thing, so does Lil Wayne, DRAKE, 2 chainz, Kendrick, etc. Ya’ll can’t really judge an album based on the single, for the most part an album single is structured for the radio. Radio stations do not play straight up Hip Hop. so stop complaining and he’s boring just because he speak that realness that the average person can relate to.

    14. Dayum it’s just too many haters on here…hip hop fans are the most contradicting people! It’s all good though the real recognize the real we don’t have to say it or try to argue with these lames!

    15. I dont think people understand that we are blessed to watch a legend in the game as he grow

    16. no one is making music like j cole….this is real music not that 2chainz french montana shit just grow the fuck up and recognize whats real

    17. @@@not impressed:Go kill yourself.

      1. Lost Ones isn’t creative…Nick Cannon did that in like 2003. The song is called “Can I Live” and it was way better. Common did that song and it was called “Retrospect For Life” and it was way better. Dollar and a Dream is not creative and he has done that song 3 times already. What else you got? You’re dick riding him for no reason, he’s not worth it.

      2. So because nick common and common did songs about abortion j cole’s wasn’t creative. stop hating fool.

    18. waterfall guwop dissaproves he still bumps waterfalls by tlc and this isnt up to standards

    19. drake runs rap and he shits on this wanna be j snore. Drake is the face of rap and when drake drops gis album it will go platinum unlike snore

      1. Kill yourself with the lies you speak. Aubrey is not the best rapper alive, he doesn’t run rap, and he’s not the face of rap. J Cole is superior to that wheelchair Jew. He’ll go platinum because he’s a shitty pop artist. Cole will go platinum.

    20. It’s unfortunate how fucked up the thinking of people are nowadays. A real artist doesn’t make music to showcase his new innovations. A real artist makes music based on his inspirations. When Marvin Gaye hit the studio to record what’s going On, u think he was thinking about innovation, of course he had the talent but his inspirations came first and the outcome was a timeless work of art, Illmatic is what it is today because Nas rhymes was based on his experiences in the projects, he brought the grimy life of the hood to the attention of the people who never lived there.

    21. haters keep on hating while the unibrowed guy keeps on caking!!
      Born Sinner June 18th!!!!!
that choir at the end of the ish is mad pote!!

    22. A mainstream rapper in 2013 releases a song that’s a positive message and catchy but people still find a way to shit on it. Unbelievable. Yes the subject has been done before by TLC. That was the point of having them feature on this song. As long as the artist puts his or her own spin on it then it’s all good. Cole did that with this song. Kendrick did it on No Makeup. There should be more positive tracks like this in the mainstream. It’s better than the superficial bullshit we’ve heard the past ten yaers.

      1. Don’t mind that Not Impressed guy, probably a writer at hiphopdx who has is 2.5/5 rating review for Born Sinner ready for June 18. A review with stupid terms like “dumbed down version of mid 2000 Kanye songs” and things of that nature.

    23. Representing NC have a chick that doesn’t see the beauty she possesses but this here is an ode to her…Crooked Smile!

      20. Jesus for a Day feat. Kendrick Lamar (Produced by J. Cole)
      21. Niggaz Know (Produced by J. Cole, co.Canei Finch)

      1. That shit really looks legit. On the Pre Order it says Miss America is track 17. He might be telling the truth this time

    25. my dude heard the album. this album is 5/5 star as a whole, more cohesive than his first. don’t beleive me just watch.

    26. If his album is going to be really cohesive with this style, then I will wait and watch before I can say anything. He moved his album to June 18 and according to DX he wants to compete with kanye. Some how I have this thought in mind that he thinks Kanye is going to be only obstacle to him and if that is the case I would laugh because judging from what I have seen so far from released rap albums this year ,cole has a lot of obstacles. I can’t wait for the album to come out and the track is not bad, infect its nice.

    27. Let em moan and groan..trust me…these sorry ass haters are going to be playing this song when they want some booty..cuz the woman are going to LOVE IT….so if your hating on Cole..TLC and This Classic Peice of Work…stfu…this track is about to be your bare necessity this summer…just watch!

    28. Personally I think Cole’s album will be better than Kanye’s but having his album come out the same day as him is definitely a commercial mistake for a young artist. Sales wise and just for generating buzz.

      1. it really doesn’t mattter that much. Only true fans buy albums these days, if that. Casual fans won’t buy an album from j.cole or kanye. Cole has his fanbase and those people will continue to support even if he falls off.

    29. like wtf, how do you hate on this…..the track has a great message, TLC killed it and the choir at the end was amazing…..wat gives you the balls to hate on this

      1. Do you know how many song from the 2000’s ended in those choirs? Nothing creative about that at all. He stole that from Just Blaze. J Cole is trapped in the 2000’s and I’m not just not impressed

      2. You’ve spent the past hrs of your life hating on Cole and listing other frauds like Nick Cannon as better rappers than him. HAHAHAHA. Like I said, you will never achieve the tiniest fraction of what Cole has achieved.

    30. sayin cole is trynna be a drake is just bullshit,,,have you ever heard such a message from drake????started from the bottom now we here, pls stop

    31. THIS NIGGA STAY WITH THEM CAPTAIN SAVE A HOE SONGS. THIS NIGGA IS STUCK IN THE 90’S WACKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK

      1. haha m sure you’ve played it like ten times already…you cant hate on a nigga if you have him on ur playlist

    32. lol and if this shit aint fire nigga then why they noddin with it?…the hate in their blood cant stop their souls from vibin with it

    33. this is wack, cole proved once again why he was still behind Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, Nas and Kanye West

    34. nas first album had no special guest appearances, the out come …….. it is crowned the best lyricist ! tlc ? damn hommie ! nas only got little dude az !

    35. dope track…great message….great flow….TLC….great choir…great beat.,,theres still hope for hiphop

    36. Kanye: 2 singles, flopped
      Cole: 2 singles, both hot

One more hot song from Cole and I’ll be convinced whose album is gonna be better

    37. are there people who seriously think the lyrics are that bad? d@mn if you can’t find the positivity and inspiration in this song then you must not have a soul…glad most people appreciate it. And to anyone sayin’ it’s a song for the “Hoes” then you’re reducing it to something much less than it really is…while he is speaking to the ladies he’s largely speaking to EVERYONE and letting them know their imperfections don’t define them…open your minds.

    38. Great message and concept…but the style is very kanyeish to the max. All those out there comparing this to kanye are foolish as that’s his style….

    39. Cole proved once again why is was wayyyy behind Eminem, Kendrick, Jay-Z, Kanye and Nas

ok artist I guess but that’s all, 5/10 song

    40. Lol cole is trying to compete with kanye yet he’s trying to jack college dropout to the extreme

not a big fan of kanye but he is clearly better than this boy

    41. It’s funny how people put J.Cole and Kendrick Lamar under this microscope. They are killing the game and bringing something new where substance meets mainstream. The folks who listen to Wayne and Ross everyday are mad because they feel like something is missing and you know what that element of missing is? It’s ignorance. They aren’t ignorant MC’s they have something to say and a clear vision but don’t get it twisted they can flex lyrical ability too but they aren’t going to do it EVERY SONG! So the backpackers gotta know that these guys are SONGWRITERS TOO. This is the progression from just a hip hop artist to an artist. 2Pac managed to transcend that and 2Pac wasn’t even super lyrical. He was a poet. Biggie was a lyrical assassin but to me he didnt transcend like Pac did but in terms of HipHop Biggie is the GOAT. My point is that ARTISTS like J.Cole and Kendrick have more to contribute to music than just “rap” go to Lil Wayne for that. If y’all have complaints, then don’t listen to the shit…But see y’all aren’t content by doing that, y’all get mad why folks are listening and these two have a large following and that’s because real recognize real and folks are sick of the garbage bullshit that Officer Ricky and Lil Wayne (who idiotically reference to Till who was murdered) y’all folks want that ignorant shit, that shit that don’t even matter. When you want that real hip hop shit, holler at Cole, Kendrick, Jay Electronica, Phonte, Nas, Lupe, etc. etc.

      1. No chance. Cole and Kendrick are CLOWNS just like all the rest. Hip hop is history. It’s time to change the name of this genre and soon. Fat Joe was correct when he said “hip hop is run by the gay mafia.” It’s nothing but a bunch of FAGS running around in the game making a mockey of hip hop music/culture.

    43. Super pussy rapper rapping over an incredibly wack beat. Absolutely terrible.

    44. 5 reasons why Lil Wayne is better than BIG:
      1. Lil Wayne actually writes his songs,, BIG stole lyrics from Lil Wayne.
      2. BIG is too lazy he doesnt even make songs anymore.
      3. Lil Wayne is a GENIUS.
      4. Lil Wayne is hotter than BIG so he gets more WOMEN
      5. BIG was gay and had no talent

      YMCMB!

    45. Nothing but a bunch of goofs on here voting 5 stars for this. Really, 5 stars?? How the fuck you figure?? Ain’t nothing 5 stars about this. Get serious, man. Any joint off ILLMATIC is 5 stars. This joint ain’t even close to 5 stars, you fucking chavalas! It’s time to up your standards or get your hearing checked.

      1. Real talk. Standards today are just maaad low. 5 stars for this song is laughable. It’s got a positive message, but there’s nothing exceptional about it. I don’t think it’s a bad song at all, but it’s far from perfect.

      2. finally someone who speaks the truth… fans be dickriding 2 hard. Nothing above average with this joint at all.

      3. Oh and you aren’t a dickrider by slurping all over Nas’ dong. Get over it, Illmatic was great, but not perfect either

      4. I’m not NAS’s biggest fan and not all of NAS joints are 5 star but “Illmatic” is a classic fucking album and every joint off that is 5 star. It’s a QUALITY album with QUALITY lyrics and QUALITY production. I’m just saying, THINK more carefully before you rate something, even if you are a big fan of Cole. Be a little more realistic when rating. It’s absolute ludicrous giving this Cole song 5 stars.

      5. people have different opinions. your opinion isn’t the only one that matters. people may relate to this song more so than you do. that’s the beauty of opinions. people are different. do you understand? it’s pretty simple to comprehend but I don’t think you realize it. people have different opinions.

      6. You don’t need to argue with me and talk about opinions. Just admit you know I’m right that there is absolutely nothing 5 star about this Cole joint right here. I don’t give a shit about opinions. I’m stating FACT, TRUTH, REALITY, do you understand?

      7. Rate it what you want. Real music lovers interpret songs differently and yes this may mean more to some than others. Who cares what others think and what they rate it. Free your mind and don’t pay attention to the whole rating or how many stars a song gets. Listen to the message…

    47. I really dig this track, only reason I would give it a 4/5 is because I feel like this dude still has some serious potential as a lyricist, overall, good job, can’t wait to see what comes next

    48. This is a great song! Lyrics on point, beat on point and everything. I hate when niggas be bitchin because a song has a certain feature, a certain hook, a certian commercial feel… come on niggas this ain’t 95 and even in 95 rappers was starting to put singers in their hook.

    49. OMG, I am going to buy this album for real. Not gonna lie, after hearing this. Cole classic here. Haters gonna Hate.

    50. As an accountant for YMCMB I can confirm Kendrick does not want to go to war with YMCMB. Wayne already said that if Lamar barks one more time, he will go Mike Vick on him. The YMCMB army is built for war. Wayne a certified gangsta. He got 3 tear drops, did a bid on the island and all that. Wayne ethered rappers and even caused permanent damage to Dez Bryant’s knee. Kendrick is wack. All Wayne has to do is throw him a rock and Kendrick will fuck his life up again

      1. accountant for YMCMB eh must be a easy job seeing as they are shit kendrick dont need to go to war hes already better than Lil wayne and evryone knows it

    51. Nothing extraordinary about this at all, but its not bad i guess. I really hope born sinner has a lot more to offer. I want to be impressed! I’ll buy it regardless tho j cole deserves that much

    52. If you actually listen to the lyrics there is some meaning to the song unlike the rest of the trap shit rick ross/mmg/grand hustle/cash money bull shit which just talks about…. Jewlerry, cars, cash, drugs and hoes.

That’s 175 rappers (including the groups) that are alive that are better then J cole. Just to name a few.

      1. Bruh, you got waaaaaay too much time on your hands to not only think of all those names but to type them as well, The fact that you’re wrong about 85% of those names just makes this pathetic

      2. Birdman is a better rapper then J.cole? Are you serious? ctfu Flo Rida? Seriously…Your gotta be trolling

      1. is that u riff raff trying to stir more shit up after no one cared that u weren’t at summer jam

    54. I like the message…but I feel a way about this tarcj, no TLC without Left Eye. I see he was going for that vintage late 90’s-Early 2000’s sound but…

I’ll give it a 5 to be generous.

    55. This song is a reminder to be comfortable in your own skin. I like how Cole made fun of his own eyebrows and teeth. It’s not corny in any way. Plus it sounds good and is enjoyable to listen to. It’s not demeaning to women or “ratchet” sounding like a lot of today’s mainstream hip hop. Mainstream hip hop needs songs like this these days. It’s a nice change of pace.

Cole points out his own flaws and not many people do that nowadays. Bravo to Cole.

      1. everyone has their own opinions. Lyric wise, yeh Cole is strong. But if his lyrics are good, that doesn’t make that it sounds very nice.

He sounds and flows like Drake and I don’t like Drake. Lyric wise, I get ya, no doubt on that.

But a song is more than just lyrics.

        – lyrics
        – flow
        – voice
        – melo
        – beat
        – chorus

If i need to chose between The White Mandingos “Mandingo’s Rally” or “Crooked Smile” from Cole,

well that’s an easy one for me

      2. wow @ELJAY how stupid can you get….how does his flow sound like drake’s drake doesnt even flow all he does is sing

      3. flow/voice… whateva.

If the title said Drake feat. TLC, I couldn’t have said if the title was wrong or right.

Like Action Bronson sounds like Ghostface
Like Brother Ali sounds like Killer Mike

Like the name Anonymous is getting boring and has 0% originality.

      4. @ WestCoast17:

Brother Ali sounds NOTHING like killer mike haha wtf son

===> aw man, you sill don’t get it huh? Im talking about VOICES, not about FLOW.

Listen to Mourning America from Brother Ali and compare the voice to the one of Killer Mike…

Or maybe ur brain can’t handle “so much” information. In that case, ur practically a dead walker and I feel sorry for ur family.

    57. I was really surprised how well this song turned out. Cole continues to show his growth as an artist.

    58. 4/5 stars

When looking at this track, well, I really like the production, good hook, lyrically, J Cole comes across as self-aware and intelligent, but he still has a lot of room to grow as a lyricist. He has serious potential, and it would be dumb to sleep on him, unless he goes really wack with the features on his future work.

    59. love the fact he put TLC on this!!! i feel the fact that he goes back and scoops up classic people to be features. he did it on the first album with missy now TLC….use the artist the started this shit.

    60. music with a concept!! Big-ups to all the insecure ladies. You’re beautiful baby.
