snoop is whack as fuck. might be hte most over rated rapper ever, he really has very little skill when you read his lyrics especially now. back in the day when he was comin up itd be a different story but now, nah.
According to who? You? Is your opinion generalizable in any way, shape or form? Take Care has an aggregate rating of 7.8/10 to The Dreamer/The Believer’s 7.4/10. Take Care has also sold exponentially more, so it’s a more universal record as well.
Common was never known as a plat selling artist tho, and he doesn’t appeal to the mainstream crowd as that was never his career background. Common doesnt even care about album sales so that whole ” hes doing this to push units” stunt Drake tried to pull was pathetic. Drake is a pop artist so that statement was asinine.
@Anonymous get the fuck out of hip hop you stupid fuck! You are the reason hiphop sucks these days. Take Care was a fucking pop album. End of story. We discuss hip hop here, and as far as quality hip hop goes Drake gets beaten by Common in every applicable facet upon which you could compare them. So leave and never fucking come back. Everyone gets into these arguments because you are debating pop music versus hip hop music, which have entirely different methods of determining quality music. Pop artists make music to sell records, and gauge their musicall success upon how many records you sold. Trying to apply that theory to rap is just fucking retarded. If that held true in hip hop then Soulja Boy is a better rapper than Biggie. Fucking leave, quit plaguing what used to be an intelligent community. Rap artists make music to contribute to a lasting culture. In 50 years there will still be die-hard Common fans, yet Drake will have been forgotten. So shut the fuck up and leave. Seriously.
Anonymous i understand where you’re coming from but in hip hop, a quantitative edge is vastly different from a qualitative one in terms of a “successful” album. If Common wanted to challenge the mainstream quota by making this a “pop” record thats sonically appealing, he could have. But theres a reason why he chose to only work with No I.D as the producer. Theres a reason why he featured Maya Angelou on the opening track.
Common’s intention was to rhyme about certain themes that are deemed ‘classical’ in hip-hop on soulful melodies. Drake’s intention was diametrically opposed to Commons but he executed his game plan successfully. Does that make Common’s album better? Not necessarily. But that also doesn’t mean that Drake’s was better. Both exceeded in their respective dimensions. Ultimately, hip hop is largely subjective and fans are naturally fickle.
Stats can always be measured but the quality of the album is an independent judgement made only by the listener. I think, aesthetically, The Dreamer/The Believer was better even though it didn’t monetarily exceed Take Care. At the end of the day, i have my opinions and you have yours.
Can you really, objectively determine the artistic merit of any given rapper? I mean, you may categorically deny that “Take Care” was hip-hop, but you’re really just projecting your own standards and criteria onto a nebulous concept. Will Common actually have a “lasting legacy” down the line? Couldn’t that be the product of your own hyper-partisanship? It’s an opinion rooted in subjective biases (that we all have); it holds as much weight as me saying Drake will be a legend down the line. But really, it’s far more likely that individuals who can conflate commercial and critical success — like Jay-Z, Kanye etc. — could have prevailing legacies. Drake’s definitely not in that league as of right now, but who knows where he’ll end up, dude’s 25. His trajectory is on the upward swing, and if he can refine his technique as a rapper, then he has a chance, simply because he’s captured the imagination of so many loyal fans. Statistics are spurious without qualitative analyses, but that’s why Anonymous brought up the Metacritic score — it just proves that Take Care had a better critical review than The Dreamer/The Believer (rap sites like XXL gave both records the same 4/5 rating, for example). This shit’s all based on personal opinion, stop getting so salty about how other’s feel. Not everybody’s going to agree one way or the other. I think it’s important that hip-hop have variance; the hip-hop/pop/R&B music that Drake puts out, and the “conscious” brand of hip-hop that Common subscribes to are both needed to ensure that the genre can survive regardless of “what’s in” at the time.
any true hip hop head know that record sales dont determine who wins a battle if u wanna look back at when Jay-z got ETHERED by NAS we all know who won that battle so #’s dont have anything to do with wins unless your taking points and if so Drake the cake boy wouldnt even score.. He sells records cuz he hums on balls Drake aint nothing but Justin Beiber with facial hair matter fact Justin Beiber is tougher than Drake… Bars win battles not numbers and notes… sing to your girl not to me playboy…
@KC, you said Drake is not in the same league as Jay Z and Kanye as of right now, but he will NEVER be. Look at the early careers of Kanye and Jay Z. They are True Hip Hop heads who came up and became mainstream success stories. Maybe I don’t know enough about Drake, but his debut album is nothing like Reasonable Doubt. My prediction is that Drake will not stand the test of time, Common has already done that. 2 decades.
this is clearly a freestyle, youd have to be retarded to think he wrote this.. Saying com-sense 25 times and cosmic kev 5+ times. Hes repeating his name to get time for his brain to think and apparently he fooled you
u obviously were’nt listening. as the dj adlibs and cuts him off he takes the adlib and begins rappin again. if the dj aint keep cuttin him off throwin his train of thought off common woulda went in. decent freestyle for common. woulda been better if not for the dj. youngsters just dont know how long common been spittin niceness and real freestyles.
he def is coming off the top with pieces of his written stuff added in but who can do that now a days i know CANADA DRY aka MR MASCATO cant… COMMON is a true MC ask JAY Z
Come on son s/o to French free Max this nigga _Common is a old school nigga in the game so he gets props by default but this wasn’t his strongest… the beat went way harder than this nigga
Common is the real deal. He aint afraid to come off the dome…he aint afraid to battle and name names if someone comes for him. He is true hip hop.
I really don’t know how anyone can compare a CD like The Dreamer/The Believer to Take Care. The themes and lyrics on Take Care are almost paper thin….shallow shit..it’s like Drake literally has NOTHING to say.
Meanwhile, Common goes deep, goes light and everywhere in between. You can say it aint fair because Common is older, but listen to his earlier stuff and it’s superior to anything Drake’s put out as well. Common is just a superior artist IMO. They don’t make em like that anymore…..maybe J Cole, Kendrick or KRIT will step it up in the future but Drake is not it. I’m sorry.
the dreamer/the believer sucked, really; only thing on-point was the technique, take care’s lyrical depth was lacking, but the subtext – taking a different take to the “tortured artist” concept that kanye made famous – was really well-structured when you listen to the whole record holistically … ay, my opinions though
The slick talk directly or indirectly to Common is cool because the reality is he’s real hiphop and Drake isn’t. Can Drake freestyle? No! Can Drake battle rap? No! Has Drake made a classic album? No! Do do guys over 18 pump Drake’s music in the car or at the gym? Hell No! Well then what does he have? (((little boys and girls buying his album))) More pop then hiphop. The Ja Rule of this time. So keep it up with the slick talk, becuase your boy is done. The cats out the bag, everyone knows he’s a corny dude. Oh and by the way, it doesn’t matter how old you are in music as long as your good. I wonder if you young cats will still listen to Drake when he’s “old” I guess not, but then again will he be around? lol FHFS!!! Fake Hiphop Fans Suck! Learn the hiphop culture!!!
COMMON IS A ILL MC WITH SENSE!!
What up Serena! Too funny!
