A year to the week after Trunk Muzik deservingly got the retail treatment as one of the finest mixtapes in recent memory, the pride of Gasden, Alabama offers his studio debut, Radioactive. Despite the artist’s esteemed major label backing and iconic co-sign in Eminem, the record feels as any ascent to the majors would have for Yelawolf. His authenticity is what sustained him through previous deals, and it’s what made him an emerging star in spite of his refusal to conform. Still respecting that authenticity, Radioactive may veer towards the mainstream Pop, but nothing changes the fact that in an era of neon-Rap, Yelawolf is the bug light.
The first third of the album is what will appeal most to Catfish Billy’s devoted supporters. The self-proclaimed “White trash heartthrob” kicks off his show with a display of lyricism and content that aligns very closely with Yelawolf has always been about – sincerity, family, community and of course Chevrolet Caprice Classics. First single “Hard White” 
succeeds in blending velvet-rope club music with a Pabst Blue Ribbon-pounding anthem. In this call-back to Crunk, Yela chops, “I don’t cook my shit, I don’t break it down for you motherfucker out there waitin’ around for some Rap savior / You better look up at what it is that you facin’ now / ‘Cause Jesus drives a Harley, the devil wears Prada / If God was one of us, he’d probably’ drink vodka.” The emcee’s boosted arrogance and brushes with anger occasionally on Radioactive are elements that make the album shine. The Southern gentleman is at his best when he drops the humility and takes ownership of being a multi-talented counter to legions Upper Middle Class rappers popping up. “Let’s Roll” is another stadium record, with Kid Rock’s pleasant crooning. This is a week-in-the-life of Gasden, but really, a Middle-America anthem. In the same way Jay-Z and Alicia Keys made a cap-tipper to their city, this is Yelawolf’s “I see you” nod to the Hip Hop fans of the Red states. Wal-Mart parking lot music hasn’t sounded this good since Nelly’s Country Grammar, and don’t be surprised if this song is the one that delivers Yela to Rock Radio.
Despite a strong opening, Radioactive‘s biggest detractors are a bulk of its choruses and beats. “Radio” has the Lynyrd Skynyrd reaching riffs and ’80s Buggles interpolation, but this Girl Talk mash-up concept takes away from Yela’s potent verses about the changes in music, including mentions of Black Star, Trick Daddy and Group Home. “Made In The U.S.A.” battles a similar problem, as Yela’s earnest lines about the war, the economy and the state of the union are compromised by Priscila Renae’s wretched chorus, sounding like stage-exit music to a small-town political campaign. Besides Kid Rock, the singing guests on Yela’s debut cramp the style. As he proved early in his ascent, on Slim Thug’s “I Run,” Yelawolf can handle the heavy lifting of melody and a bridge, and can make songs that sound mainstream but authentic. A more recent example of this, “The Hardest Love Song In The World” lives up to its name lately, with a David Axelrod sound and a polished performance from an uncredited R&B singer. For some reason on Radioactive, the versatile Yela focused on writing strong verses and interrupted many of his messages with cheap choruses or poorly translated musical ideas.
When Rap is the vehicle for Yelawolf to deliver his message, Radioactive lives up to its anticipation and falls in line with the exciting musical possibilities of the DXnext alum. From Gangsta Boo to Lil Jon to Kid Rock and Killer Mike, the Alabama emcee was adamant about pulling his influences and trail-blazers onto his studio debut. 2008 mash-up mixtape Stereo was strongly considered as was Trunk Muzik in making Radioactive. The concepts and the potency of some of the sixteens absolutely dazzle, as Middle America may feel included in the mainstream Hip Hop conversation for the first time in years. However, what worked for B.o.B. isn’t necessarily possible with Yelawolf. Regardless of how it’s delivered, Yelawolf has a message that is felt beyond the confines of Rap music.

I think a 4/5 rating will do. Good album, I agree with the almost forced chorus’ on some of the tracks. One thing that got me twisted is if you close your eyes during some of the songs, Yela almost has some of the same rapping styles as 3 Stacks (Andre). Maybe it is just me, and I am not comparing the two artists what so ever, but give it a second listen an find out.

Good fist half, but he sound was a lil different for the secod half. Yela delivered content but some beats were too differnt from his natural vibe. Em kind of cramped some of his style to have him try and crossover on some songs.(the slow songs ). The content was on point but some of the ideas were poorly translated musical. The ft. with killer mike was kind of the only good song in the second half of the album. Wht I mean by second half is when Em jumped on that phone call about more girl songs, the album took a turn. Good ideas but the songs just didn’t jam.

Epic albums usually change the industry not follow them. Think the Chronic or Nas first album. They brought in a complete new style of music and ushered a whole new style of rap.

Good lyrics, a few gems but too many weak pop hooks. Some worked, most didn’t fit. Review is dead on. As big fan of Trunk Muzic I was slightly disappointed. Still bought it, but I hope he gets the pop out of his system. “Made in the U.S.A” could have been a banger with a harder hook.

This isn’t gonna be his crowning achievement. It shows how good an MC he is but he lacks musical direction ( A lot like Em at points). I would love to hear an album of tracks like Get Away, Radioactive Intro and Hard White, tracks that show how good a rapper he is. For every good verse here there is a bad chorus or beat. 3.5 – 4 is fair.

Album is definitely 1 of the TOP Albums of the year….. Yelawolf gives you several pieces to think on with Good Girl, Radio, & The Last Song; some bangers with Hard White, Throw It Up, & Animal. His flow, lyrical ability, & the production make for an album worth picking up.

I loved this album and i am not even a huge Yelawolf fan, i actually like this more than Trunk Musik.
It is a a poppy sounding album at times, but i actually dug some of the pop songs.
He has some songs that really reminded me of the old eminem “Growing up in the Gutter” really made me think of old Eminem

I bought the album and thought it was great.
when i gave it a first listen i stopped at track 4, but i gave it another listen and its pretty good. the more i listen to it the more i like it. also cant go wrong listening to this in your car with the bass up

Me. Yela killed it, Gangsta Boo was fucking annoying, and the only time I can listen to Em flow like that is on A Kiss, it clashed horribly with this beat. Yela has now joined the select few who, in my eyes, have beaten Eminem on a track. Of course, this is all my opinion, but I’ll still wait for some asshole to come and say I’m wrong for thinking something for myself.

Good fist half, but he sound was a lil different for the secod half. Yela delivered content but some beats were too differnt from his natural vibe. Em kind of cramped some of his style to have him try and crossover on some songs.(the slow songs ). The content was on point but some of the ideas were poorly translated musical. The ft. with killer mike was kind of the only good song in the second half of the album. Wht I mean by second half is when Em jumped on that phone call about more girl songs, the album took a turn. Good ideas but the songs just didn’t jam.
But it grows on you the more you play it.

I’m a fan of Yela, but this album is just not at all memorable. It sounds like he was trying to hard to sell units. The beats and choruses are mostly shit. THough there’s a few solid tracks on here. To be honest…2.5 stars. All the interviews that I’ve read with him describing the recording process sounded like he wasn’t in control of the sound, and this album just demonstrates that.

That is a bit overstated. Yela is tight, hopefully this album grows on me, but it does not have my attention like Trunk Muzik. Now, if the quoted statement were true, Outkast would be like the Beetles or Elvis. But they aren’t and the times are different. So, Outkast is Outkast, Yela is Yela, Em is Em, and Jordan is Jordan. I just don’t get these far fetched, ridiculous comparisons.

I’m sorry but this review is 100% right. I guess many of you only recently started to listen to Yela, but for those of us who have been listening since pre-trunk music this was a disappointing album. I’m sure many fans of his original sound would agree. This album is a hard sellout, a totally mainstream attempt. Before all you bandwagoners flip out, i did buy this album. Yes it is lyrical. Yes there are some good songs. Unfortunately many of the hooks clash with Yela’s style. I do like Animal, I though Fefe ripped that but the other ones sucked. Best song is “Get Away”, and I hope Yela “gets away” from this pop shit on his next release. Lastly, Eminems feature sucked, I thought it subtracted from the track with Gangsta Boo, He should have hopped on “Made in the USA” and done a harder hook. Just my two cents take it or leave it, I couldn’t give a shit.

I also have to disagree. I’ve been a Yelawolf fan for a long time now, and its refreshing and exciting to see Yelawolf challenge himself not just sitck to the “Tried and true”. After all, this is what seperates the legends from the one-note ponies. If you do the same shit over and over again it might still be good, but that’s all you’ll ever be and you’ll retire without ever knowing what would have been if you tried something outside your shell. Yelawolf on this album was absolutely amazing. I think Yelawolfs real fans, meaning those of us who respect Creekwater and Stereo just as much as Trunk Muzik, realize Yelawolf’s talents are too diverse to just keep putting out mixtape sounding truck rattling southern bangers. This album showed how absoutely well rounded he is, whether its a quick spitting hard hitting track like “Throw it up” or its a touching, introspective song like “Radio”.
I don’t think that this is a mainstream album at all either, most of these tracks would never make it to radio except for a few. Do some of these tracks have a more mainstream sound to them? Maybe, in a way…but his lyrical abilities, his character, his intelligence and the substance make it completely unable to reach the mass sheep who couldn’t enjoy it if they tried because of their own stupidity. I’m sorry, but I flat out disagree with any Yelawolf fan who says this album wasn’t brilliant. To me and most of his fans, it exceeded our own expecations.

5 stars, hands down. This album is 100% legendary and original, no album has ever been put out like this before . Never since Eminem have I heard a hip hard artist with so much diversity. The ability to have one track containing a hard hitting, rapid fire delivery and the next have a somewhat slower, insightful, but lyrically imaginative track, all while keeping his identity, is phenominally refreshing. There are usually 2 types of artists, those with incredible flows who lack lyricalism and creativity, and those who are amazing with lyrics but have no real flow or sound that makes them original. Yelawolf has both of these attritubutes, to a high degree. Combined with the fact that he is from the dirty south, is a former skateboarder, grew up living a welfare filled white trash life, just makes him that much more interesting.
Some of his trunk muzik fans might criticize this album for sounding too “radio friendly” with some tracks, or perhaps label it as too all-over-the-place, but I say it shows the diversity of Yelawolfs talent. Yelawolf could have easily put out another mixtape sounding album similar to that of trunk muzik, but yelawolf is not the type of artist to “settle” for what’s easy. He pushed himself, he challenged himself, and he explored new avenues an sounds on some tracks while still clinging to his southern roots and his rapid fire delivery on others, but always been Yela. I haven’t been this excited about a hip hop artist in a long time. Whether or not he recieves the commercial attention of the mass audiences is yet to be seen, but it’s far to say…either way, we are all witnessing a legend in the making.

Really good CD, but agree with DX on the choruses, some of them are a little gay. He reps the true south unlike the bullcrap ATL guys who try to when they know nothing about it.
Jay Cole isn’t rap. He is R&B/Pop. Radioactive is pretty good. Definitely got a unique sound. I’ve been a Yelawolf fan since I heard him on a few mixtapes a few years back. This CD is not exactly what I expected but good nonetheless.

As someone who thoroughly enjoyed Yelawolf’s first release, Trunk Muzik, I had high expectations as I started listening to this album. Unlike Trunk Muzik, this album started slow with the southern Ludacris feel, as it progressed it turned into a mainstream southern rap album. The album lacks depth, in comparison to Trunk Muzik which told stories about his relationships and southern lifestyle, instead he is rapping/talking about money and his newly acquired wealthy lifestyle. There weren’t any songs that really stood out as far as beats/lyrics are concerned. This album is a complete disappointment, in my opinion, it has no heart and lack orginiality.

So the album had a few and I mean a FEW poppy moments. It’s a mainstream debut. Nobody complains when Eminem makes pop-rap comedy songs. They laugh and embrace the different style being approached by Em instead of always going with the psychotic , misogynistic style he is primarily known for.
And even on the poppy songs, Yela consistently adds killer flow and a fast-paced delivery and adapts to whatever style of beat is thrown at him. It’s not a complete repeat of Trunk Muzik, so it’s nothing he’s really already done before.

I haven’t changed the cd in my car since it came out. Album is a little different from what I was expecting from Yela but it’s still the best cd out this year.

Not the best cd out. but I was wrong it is growing on me. Maybe because I am too lazy to scout for new music and just want to listen to something new. But This album is growing on me. But there is nothing special about it.
Radioactive is by far the best cd out there,and album of the year, not one song is a bad one, every song a hit, catfish billay is the best

I’ve nvr listened 2 Yelawolf B4 this album. Heard pop the trunk once & just was not impressed. But this radioactive is pretty frickin’ dope. This is my 2nd rotation w/ it & I’m liking it more every time. Regardless of what any1 thinks this album comes from a genuine place N him. So that makes it REAL! That IMO makes it art & not assembly line BS… I will definately B listening 4 more.

Deserves a Grammy. Definately the best RAP ALBUM OF THE YEAR, IF NOT ALBUM PERIOD. Listen to it with the 3 tracks bonus and its a hell of a journey. I hate when reviews pick and choose songs. ITS AN ALBUM. so listen to it. Yelawolf is now one of my favourite rappers. On the top 10 with Tupac, Immortal Technique, Nas, Classified etc.

Man listening to the first 6 songs I thought this was going to be the hardest muthafucking album of the year… But then Em called and it went a bit Hip Poppy till track 14 with Killer Mike, but yeah if you cut this down to your favourite 8/9 songs then it’s a 4.5/5 EP
Just love the album, one of my all time favorites.
It was cool. He couldve came harder though
