Various Artists – Rap Essentials 2000

Over the last few years the Rap Essentials compilations have been a premier forum for new Canadian rap talent. On 2000’s edition there is a clear dividing line among the included artists between those with real talent and those still in the developing stages.

The most impressive track, and perhaps one of the best rap songs of the new millennium is Gimme 5 Mics by Arsenal. If Arsenal can capitalize on even a miniscule amount of his potential, he will make his name known.

Brassmunk
continues to gain momentum in their strides for underground dominance with the hard rock laced Live Ordeal. These guys are unbelievably dope, and Live Ordeal proves just how versatile they are.

Citizen Kane’s
Soldier Story, and Mathematik‘s No Division (with Swizz Beats sounding production) are excellent examples of the great improvements that both of these artists’ have made.

Newcomer Apollo‘s track 4 Da Crew is also worthy of mention.

Sadly, veterans Dan-E-O and Madlocks both contribute uninspired tracks that only disappoint.

POW
‘s Crazy and Wild, and Sniper Chad & Colossus‘s Romeo should have been scraped entirely. In order to boost sales hit tracks from Black Rob to Q-Tip have also been included. But overall the content found on this disc has just as many lows as it does highs.
