Meek Mill – Dream Chasers (Mixtape Review)

It’s amazing what a major co-sign at the right time can do for your career. Just a few years ago, Philadelphia-native Meek Mill was seeing his potential squandered despite being affiliated with T.I.’s Grand Hustle imprint. Now, the 24-year-old can breathe a bit easier with Rick Ross and Maybach Music Group at his disposal, with Dream Chasers acting as a testament to his newfound drive for success.

It’s evident that much like his mogul overseer, Meek Mill has an ear for insatiable beats that fittingly compliment his lyrical street tales. Whether it’s the bounce of “House Party,” the motivating background synth on “Dream Chasers” or the much-praised cut “Ima Boss” beats crafted by collaborators Tone Beats, All Star and Jahlil Beats make this a mixtape worthy of repeat listens for the production alone. A confident Meek Mill rarely shies away from the lively production, taking every chance he gets to boast while preserving a consistent delivery that shows his maturity on the mic.

In that same vein, the mixtape’s largest detraction becomes Meek Mill’s persistent references to drugs, money and women. Look no further than “Won’t Stop” and “Get Dis Money,” where paper becomes Mill’s main focus. Blinded by the almighty dollar, it’s safe to say one likely could have been omitted to prevent redundancy. His narrative on “Tony Story” finds itself slightly typical and commonplace as revenge in the dope game becomes a motivating factor for the characters in the story. Truth be told, Ricky Rozay’s lyrical repertoire suffered from this same issue which he was able to grow out of. It’s likely that Meek Mill will do the same in the future.

Dream Chasers is an extension of what Meek Mill solidified on Self Made Vol. 1: a young hungry emcee who has found the right supporting cast to push his brand of Rap. The lengthy track list could be a bit cumbersome for listeners just getting into his music, but for the supporters of his Flamerz series, Dream Chasers is a nice addition to his ever growing collection. In any case, Meek Mill should have changed the title of this project, because frankly it seems like his dreams are fast becoming reality.

    1. Meek Mill is trash. I actually thought this would be good, but he’s just a mini Rick Ross that sounds like he hasn’t reached puberty yet.

    2. Hottest mixtape i’ve heard in a long while. Way better than i thought it would be. Wasnt just shoot’em up and selling drugs even though the theme was basically chase that dream by any means nessesary. He gave that 2pac gangsta mentality while still delevering messages, telling stories, and makin the club jump. track 8 Tony Story instant classic..few artist can tell a story like that, track 3 House party is gonna be killin the clubs the rest of the summer and into the fall, track 9 MIddle of the summer another hit. He killed Love dont live here anymore for all those who didnt think he cud get deep. Those r just my favorites…but i dont care who u are …ur either listening closely to wut hes saying or at least bobbing ur head to the vast majority of this mix tape. i predict that hes to b the next big star in hip hop since Nicki and Drake and one of the best in the game. i want u all to come back and read this post a year from now and tell me i was wrong. im giving him 5 stars because he keept it gangster for his grass roots fans while still displaying superb lyrical talent, wit and swag.

    5. He iaight i guess.I cant see him getting really big. I live in south NJ so hes popular in my area. Alotta ppl bang with Millz. I think he gets really repetitive. Jalil beats (or whatever) has repetitive “hood hop” type beats but hey work well with Millz flow actually. I will say Millz has come a long way since the rap dvd days where he used to freestyle on dvd documentry type shit beefing with dudes in hes city. Hes flow got better and he rapping with Ross. I respect him

    6. If Meek Millz Dont Savour Ya Taste in music, then y listen 2 him ? Negative Pussys go get a job instead of talkin shit on the internet keyboard warriors lol, Meeks Keep Ya Doin Ting Nigga , Love From The U.k !

    7. He’s a super talented rapper and the beats bang. Easily the best street rap album of 2011. House Party is by far the biggest banger I’ve heard this year.

    8. I don’t know how people can listen to this and think it’s just ok..other than some songs being a little repetitive, but he’s very good and will only get better. He’s clearly talented and has a raw style,I don’t know how anyone could hate on this guy.I wouldn’t normally give someone a perfect rating but I just wanna piss off the haters.
