Kid Cudi – Indicud

Kid Cudi’s otherworldly aspirations, at the very least, have been an affirmation that the Cleveland rapper will never settle for the industry standard. Ever since breaking through in 2008 he’s been an instrumental force of nature, solidifying himself with a dash of bravado, a touch of anxiety and a shot of medicinal therapy. And yet, while previously surrounded by substantial figures, Cudi now finds himself in musical solitude, a decision made on his own accord. No Kanye West, no Plain Pat, no Emile. Solo dolo indeed. Fully handling production duties alongside his usual vocal heroics, one thing’s for sure; Indicud is his most hands-on release to date.

Cudi’s finest moments emerge when his convictions transcend any cryptic persona he’s constructed (Mr. Rager, King Wizard, etc). Over stout drums and a surging MGMT sample reverberating throughout “Immortal,” he puts his daily concerns into perspective.

“Bet you want to see me weak / Not sort of my thing you see / I’m too damn cool, my mojo too dope.” These same detractors feel his wrath on “Cold Blooded” where he raps, “One two one two, assholes now please listen close / I live for the day to watch all you pussies roast / Woosah woosah, so I don’t slit nobody throat / Aww it ain’t my fault, homie thought he had the juice.” Granted, Indicud is particularly upbeat compared to his past projects, but it’s clear that animosity breeds some of his best work. This goes for the Kendrick Lamar-assisted “Solo Dolo Pt. II” as well. Slightly erratic, the track features a cooler-than-thou Cudi relishing in his success.

Interestingly, there are a handful of instances in which Kid Cudi takes a backseat on the vocals (which he’s likened to Dr. Dre’s 2001), and despite his absence, the results are commendable. While it won’t persuade the most fervent Rap supporter, “Red Eye” blissfully captures the vexing trials of life from synth-pop trio Haim. Considerably more appropriate, “Beez” finds RZA rocking venomous back-to-back verses (“I don’t write songs, grasshopper, I write sceneries”). If Indicud is indeed a nod to 2001, then that would make King Chip his Hittman. Making appearances on the first two solo albums (known then as Chip Tha Ripper), the fellow Cleveland-native’s presence is tolerable if only because he’s featured on the exceptional production of “Brothers” and “Just What I Am.”

Kid Cudi’s penchant for total control, and sometimes lack thereof, becomes the biggest hindrance on Indicud. Throw whatever adjective you want at the offbeat inflections heard on “Unfuckwittable,” it doesn’t change the fact that it’s strenuous to sit through. His vocals fare better on “Girls,” but with him and Too Short strutting amongst a cheeky theme, it’s a performance that’s only briefly amusing. Over a distorted melody, somehow Cudi pulls a move on “Young Lady” reminiscent of Phonte’s verse for “Whatever You Say,” in that none of his rhymes…rhyme. And then there’s the curious case of “Afterwards (Bring Yo Friends).” Built around a throbbing background designated for the electronic scene, this mischievous nine-minute cut is capped off by the sparse vocal musings of Michael Bolton. Even the most well-executed Internet meme couldn’t do this odd pairing justice. Forget experimental, it’s downright excessive.

Sustaining an imaginative disposition, it’s fitting that the first words uttered on the album are, “Once you realize you can do anything, you’re free.” Indicud is an ambitious project that Kid Cudi took a blind shot at, and while by no means does he completely exemplify his immortal identity, he certainly makes a compelling case nonetheless.

      1. Commenting three different times with a different name but the same comment content is a good indicator of having a sad/boring life. Faggot.

    1. This album is a 4 at least. Cudi is original and dope! Fuck what these garbage ass haters say…..

    2. Id give this two stars. One star for effort and one star for consistency. The production is bad whether you ltke it or not. I cant complain about the lyrics and vocals,Typical Cudi content. If youre a fan you might be willing to overlook what this release is lacking. There is nothing here that asks for the listener to hear it again Too much yet not enough. Dude left Kanyes label because someone told him the truth.

    3. i love it, this albums feels how you would expect cudi to be after man on the moon and wzrd it’s like a fusion of both styles that works if you’re not into cudi i don’t think this will change you but if you are you should love this album 4/5

    4. Cudi is the leader of the new school, hands down!! He represents a generation who grew up listening to all genres of music. It’s innovation at its best. You can’t place him in a box. He’s like Pink Floyd mixed with Outkast and a little bit of Marley. He’s on his way to being legendary.

    5. Beats lacked, would have been way better if had other producers instead…he’s no KRIT when it comes to producing a whole album.

    6. Its good. A few tracks I could have done without but a good effort unlike most of the crap out today.

      1. Lol “you don’t understand.” The dude is talentless, end of discussion. His singing is so bad and his rapping is so basic…

    7. You’re legit the dumbest person I’ve ever witnessed. You think this albums bad because you don’t get Scott. You don’t understand. Catch up idiot.

    8. consistency was key
needs to change his music a little
      give it a new vibe
personally liked it cause it sounded like a mixtape but he can do better,

    9. it grows on you like all all cudi albums but it’s not MOTM at all. i think his next project is a mix of indicud and MOTM then we’ll have some real magic from king wzrd

    10. “Indicud is an ambitious project that Kid Cudi took a blind shot at…” then what the hell was WZRD?

    11. Indicud is completely different than any of Kid Cudi’s previous work, but it definitely shows the growth and evolution of his music. Great production, and it really grows on you the more you listen. 5/5

    12. I think Kid Cudi should produce a maximum of 5 songs on his album, his production isn’t bad but it get REALLY repetitive… A bit like himself TBH.

    13. only people who understand Cudi’s state of mind and his vision can really appreciate this album, most people are too closed minded for that.

      1. I hate people that think Cudi is REALLY deep, trust me, if you think that then it is you who is close minded.

      2. “Realness” said NOTHING about Cudi being “DEEP” bruh. You gotta read the comment again. Cudi definitely has a unique vision and state of mind musically. Whether you like him or not, you can’t deny that

    14. I loved this album, I really enjoyed his production and trademark Cudi style, big fan of how the songs linked together so well all the way through, I feel like it’s such a pleasure to listen to and more artists should adapt it. I was sad to hear that Cudi left G.O.O.D Music but am ecstatic to hear about Wicked Awesome Record (W.A.R) I cannot wait to hear the songs that will be released by this label, Kid Cudi beats complemented with other artists should be a pleasure to hear.

    15. Im the biggest Cudi fan that I know. I can go weeks of only listening to Cudi’s discography (excluding WZRD). But Indicud is a dissapointment to me. The catchy melodies he incorporated in his songs in MOTM 1 & 2 are mostly gone. His flow is messy on the majority of cuts. Its no suprise that the most Cudi-like song, Just What I Am, is my favorite on the album. The production ranges from great (just what I am, Brothers) to unlistenable (young lady, Lord of the sad and lonely).

The appeal of Kid Cudi was how he could put you in a certain mood with each song. Every song really had a vibe to it. The vibes and moods appear to be gone and it just feels more hollow this time around.

I am on my 4th listen thru currently, and I must say it is gradually growing on me. still dissapointed tho.

      1. Wow could not agree more. Kinda creepy that another Brandon says exactly what I think. I feel as if everyone who is saying that criticism of this CD is “hating” is missing the point. I love Kid Cudi, but I just don’t think he is a good enough producer for all of his songs. It gives the CD a dull, depressing vibe with only a few up beat songs in between.

Having said that, only have gone through the CD once and I am sure I will enjoy it more with familiarity and time.

    16. There is no point in discussing this album, or any of Cudders music for that matter, with these so called “hip-hop” fans. Alot of these closed minded idiots are so comfortable in their generic “rap” circles and expect every artist to put out southern beats and recycled lyrics constantly, simply because its the norm. Hip-hop was based on “making something out of nothing”, being expressive to your full potential and creating something yourself that no one else has done, not by whoring yourself out to every producer and shouting lyrics like “sometimes i stevie wonder” or “i got so much money i could buy your bitch!” There is nothing wrong with changing up your style, worked for lauryn hill with neo-soul, its working with drake and r&b, its working with death grips with electronic music, it worked for a tribe called quest with jazz…ect Maybe if some of these people opened their minds up to other aspects of music, we might actually have more great musicians coming out with extraordinary, innovative and exciting music, rather than celebrating absolute shit that keeps faggot ass dick riding kids and degenerate morons who love everything that everyone else loves, foaming at the mouth.

      1. You make no point here whatsoever, your arguing without a point. Cudi is the least ‘generic’ rapper going… plus he doesn’t class himself as a rapper. He has always said his sound is different, he raps, he sings, and people still love him. so carry on arguing an invalid point you dick

      2. LOL @IronWolf stop thinking HIPHOP is a science, stfu and enjoy the music you sound dumb as shit, sorry i didnt read the novel above. Like Cudis music?? Dope, you dont? Cool, just shit the fuck up and stop being a dickriding/hating stan

    17. A solid album, but the production was a little weak at times and the lyrics were very bland and repetitive at times. Apart from that its pretty good. Far from a classic but still a 4/5.

    18. Album is dope! People don’t understand cidi, therefore they don’t appreciate it and expect him to stick to a one album sound? move on and appreciate king cudi.

    19. along with other people I was really dissapointed the first listen but after listening to it more I appreciate the production more and the songs themselves. MONTM 1 is probably the best we will see from Cudi but this is still a decent album

    20. i like this album, seems like people are voting low just because the dont like hime for no reason. listen to it a couple times for honest review 4.3/5 so ill round up for hhdx sake 😛

    21. WIthin Indicud, Kid Cudi proves his production skills and once again thrives with his meaningful lyrics. Tracks such as “New York City Rage Fest”, “Afterwards (Bring Yo Friends)”, “Just What I Am”, and “Immortal” exemplify his talent in production amazingly. With the assistance of several other artist, such as A$AP Rocky, RZA, King Chip, and Michael Bolton, the lyrics become incredibly relevant and masterful.

    22. Good album. Not outstanding like he said it was going to be, but its definitely worth it. I’m not sure if it’s just me or did the album kind of seem all over the place?

    23. Stop with this bullshit you cudi nut huggers… if you were a real fan you wouldnt allow this nigga to come out with an album this shitty and go unheard with your disappointment. Im a huge cudi fan and it sucks seeing other fans talk about how cool and different it is when really its dog shit. Criticism brings the best of anybody. Quit being content with this nonsense.

    24. Kid Cudi is my favorite artist, but as a whole, I’ve got mixed feelings about this album. The only song I cared for on WZRD was Teleport 2 Me, and theres a only a few cuts I like on this album. I’m not feeling his Rock vibe, and I’m not feeling him as a producer. I respect him trying to go to different areas creatively, but I like him on his Man On The Moon vibe. Most people that hate him only hate him because they claim he’s not hip-hop, but that’s what makes him unique. There’s no specific genre attached to his music. He does his own thing.

    25. Its alright, but dude has become less entertaining to me with each album. But I respect his shit he does what he does

    26. i respect his direction. Doin what you wanna do is the whole point of making it. With his separation from GOOD, I believe Cudi knows what he’s doing

    27. Dope album..

it’s funny because the only people shitting on the album are raps fans.. Cudi is not hiphop/rap. He has certain elements that represent hip hop but you can’t place his music in just one genre- which is GREAT! we need more of that in music, especially today. This album has sounds similar to Trent Reznor’s sound (Nine Inch Nailz) which is dope as fuck but most people on sites like this have no idea who that is- which is cool, too so it’s not expected for those who only listen to rap to appreciate an artist like Cudi, which is cool, too. Cudi’s music caters to a demographic bigger than hip hop/rap heads, and he knows it, and that is why despite the fact that radio and sites like Hip Hop DX give him no love, he is still relevant, and he’s doing it on his own terms; creating what he wants. I’m lucky I listen to all types of music so when I listen to artists like Cudi who push the envelope, it’s refreshing. Those who keep their taste only on the hiphop sound will only like 2-3 songs on his album, so they miss out, which is cool, too.

      1. you are so right on this! and the fool above me obviously knows nothing about music if he is going to sit there and type it’s still rap just on different instrumentals as if their aren’t many different genere within the rap genere itself smh

      2. i listen to other music and thought this album was mediocre, i will admit its his best effort since MOTM, but i don’t see how singing the same melody over and over again flat and out of tune is pushing the envelope

    28. have to say, I was dissapointed the first few listens thru. but im currently on my fifth listen, plus im baked now. and it sounds pretty awesome. im trying to think of words to describe it and im coming up with: majestic, ahead of its time, risky, experimental, and trippy.

MOTM1 will always be my favorite cudi album of all time.

    29. This album is definitely a grower, so don’t hate after the first listen. Some songs really felt like an old school Cudi while some felt like a better version of WZRD style Cudi. Was a great album, only thing I didn’t care for was the instrumentals.

    30. Great album, Cudi adopts a new dope style going from rap tracks to some other hard to catalogue style haha. I also love the production, great to hear some new fresh material.

    31. Listen to it a few times before you hate! THIS ISNT RAP ITS MUCH BETTER AND WAY DIFFERENT! With that said after you listen to it 4-5 times smoke a bowl and then listen to the whole thing! All you can say is this man is new and fresh till death!

    32. So Wolf gets a solid 4 stars but this only gets 3.5? Fuck outta here with that.
Im fans of both artists however this album was superior.

    33. GIVE ME A CHANCE
Youtube is all about finding new artist, & though I been rapping for a while im still consider a new artist. I just want my music heard thats all, im not looking for no record deal, getting famous ‘r anything like that.! so please just spare a few sec. to check me out, & if you like what you heard please SUBSCRIBE so ill know you actually listen & support
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PzBh55tD_eg

    34. The album was not ment for small minded fuck heads.this album is ahead of its time.the only bad thing about it was he could have added more tracks.
Another CAGE collab would have been dope.some Kanye & Travi$ Scott would have also been dope

    35. overrated trash forgettable you can’t say this album is on par with motm1 and 2 unless your an idiot or dickrider

    36. I like this album, but the production overall gets repetitive at times my ears only want to hear so many synths within the course of an album and at times the synths get so sharp it actually doesn’t sound pleasant to hear.

    37. Honestly its his 2nd best album…..or 3rd lol. The point is CUdder is doin his thing…deserved 4/5 for me
      This album didnt disapoint.

    38. And they dont even see that Cudi pointing his middlefinger on the album cover… Totally bullshit cudi sold his soul to be more famous…

    39. I think this album certainly is not the best work of Kudi. The subject matter isn’t as compeling as MOTM niether is the lyricism. He seems lost. MOTM was a 10 this is about a 6

    40. KID CUDI PRODUCED THIS ENTIRE ALBUM .. HE MADE EVERY SOUND ON EVERY BEAT. THAT BY ITSELF IS INCREDIBLE. THIS ISN’T MY FAVORITE CD BY CUDI BUT NONETHELESS THIS ALBUM ROCKS AND CUDI IS THE SHIT.

    41. Yeah so I guess I’ll say it again…GET OFF MAN ON THE MOON 1&2 DICK!!
This is a GREAT album and thee best project he’s dropped

    42. only like 5 good tracks on this album, seriously im so dissapointed with this wack ass singing shit damn cudi

      1. FUCK YOU NIGGA WHY THE FUCK YOU TALKIN SHIT BOUT MY NIGGA CUDI WHAT?!? BLAH BLAH BLAH HAHAHA WHO LAUGHIN NOW YA BITCH

      2. THIS GUY^ IS A STUPID ARSE!! The guy below me if you expected more well Im laughing at all Yall for listening to the industry is Punk I didnt expect anymore then shit from those!

    43. I think this album shows that he’s talented beyond just spitting bars, but the levels of enjoyment I reached while listening to it did not register very high on my levels of enjoyment meter.

    44. If your high, this shit sounds amazing as fuck, if not then it sounds like two fags fucking each other

    45. I can listen to it but I dont.like it, just like all industry music. I wanna give this album a quarter of a star! Can you do that??

    46. who ever give this a 5 out of 5 needs to clean the shit out ears because this was just disappointing

      1. U need to clean ur fkin ears bro. This album has alot more effort put on it than any other album by other hiphop artist. How can u hate on somthing meaningfull but not all the other bullshit music around. U should worry more about the lyrics rather all the beats and sounds, mayby then you can give us an opinion.

    47. Was such a disappointment. Some of the sounds just clashed against each other and couldn’t even stand it while I was high.

    48. Definitely not his best album, but still had a couple good songs (unfuckwittable, young lady, immortal, solo dolo pt 2, girls, red eye, mad solar, burn baby burn, lord of the sad and lonely, and cold blooded).

    49. A Lot Better Than WZRD,Glad He Changed From That,Glad He Smokes Again,Glad He Put Chip On More Than 1 Song,Now I Really Don’t Expect Cudi To Come Out Producing Like Kanye So I’ll Give Him A Pass On The Production Since It Wasn’t That Overwhelming And Since He Did Put More Of Himself Into It I Didn’t Expect It To Be MOTM..He Won’t Sound Like That Anymore Folks..4/5

    50. To understand how great this album really is, you have to a) understand Scott Mescudi, all of his work, his message, and his purpose and b) be open-minded and appreciative of a wide range of music. If you have not met these requirements, you will not like or understand this amazing album.

This album is extremely musically unique and produced very well, all by Scott himself. Many claim that the beats lack clarity and depth, or that the production is this albums failure. Scott designed the album to be this way. A great example of this is in “Unfuckwittable,” the best song on the album in my opinion. If you cannot get past the idea that the synths used are dissonant and are not able to appreciate unique music, you will miss how well they all work together, and will claim that the beat is “bad.” Musically, this song fully captures Scott’s new mental standing that he has come to. We hear his energy and sense of invincibility, perfectly complimented by the albums lyrics. This song is truly something special, and possibly Scott’s greatest work yet. If you cannot see it, you are missing out greatly.

This album is revolutionary for Scott and for music in general. It is his turning point in life and in his music. Any true Cudi fan, who knows what he’s about and has connected with him, will understand this album and give Scott the credit that he deserves for making it. Simply put, this album is a masterpiece.

    51. Indicud didnt do well because it came out the wrong year, dont believe me, type in on google, best hip hop albums of 2013, and youll see….

other than that, its great, if cudi waited and edited as best as he could and waited till 2014, his albums coulda went from being #7 in sales in 2013, to #3 in 2014 i research shit like this, litterally i do its my job, i work at complex

    52. This is a light album, a party album, but it is pretty well produced and put together. The production is good, and I enjoyed it.
