The first thing that catches you is his voice. It’s a little Scarface, a little Barry White, and a pinch of Easy E.… with a Midwest accent. One listen to Marquis Devilin Turner’s first solo album and I knew: dude was born Sik.

2,190 Days and Still Breathin is inspired by Sik Da Don Sikosa’s 6 year incarceration for robbery. Facing that kind of time is enough to make anybody go crazy. They threw the book at him. Apparently he’s throwing it right back at them. So Throwed showcases his pent up anger and defiance.

I’ma keep the heat on these streets/My name Marquis: Call me the beast/The beats just got a lease / the beats is offa the leash/I’ma crush whatever I reach / I don’t care if it’s the police / In east precinct/I’ma still blast my gun as soon as you wink/ Don’t think/ I ain’t come/ back to piss ya’ll off/in a 6 all off/ With a chic suckin Sik till she cough/ Remember the boss, R.I.P. niggas finish ’em off/ give a fuck who be with Niggas / I diminish ’em all/ Picture me, pissed off and mentally lethal/ Intentionally evil/ Hoping that I’ma eventually see you/ It’s a lot of you cock niggas/ saying who you they shot nigga/ But I don’t dropped niggas in front of the cops nigga

2190 Days sounds like a major label project. Production from the Midwest’s own GRIP is polished, with beats that grab you without distracting you from the vocals. That’s a good thing, because Sikosa has a lot to say, and a lot of different ways to say it.

The album was recorded in Detroit, Toledo and Atlanta is not confined to any one style, with Sik spitting fire on some tracks, mellow on others. The deep, almost raspy vocal tone is highlighted on U Can’t See Me. Every bar drops with an almost hypnotic precision. Choppin’ & Flippin’ is a made-for-radio single that makes you want to pop a collar, while Bounce Sha Shake That is a sexy R&B blended ghetto-ballad about the chase. In Da Club featuring Bonecrusher is a hard hitting get crunk type joint as well as My City featuring MC Breed. The album also features upcoming artists Majic Juan, Al Sheez, Max A Mil.

Although I personally found the voicemail message skits a little played, they don’t prevent this from being one of those elusive “let it ride” CDs that you can play from start to finish. On this album Sikosa is more than still breathin, he’s alive and well.
