50 Cent’s 5: Murder By Numbers arrives to the Rap community’s inbox under dubious circumstances. Despite the fact that Fif has heavily intimated that the album is supposed to be his final release for Interscope, the Queens emcee found himself releasing it for free, claiming that it was simply a release planned to sate fans’ appetites before his proper fifth and final album for Interscope. You know, the album that’s not going to be called 5. It’s just as well, given that Interscope didn’t do much, if any, promo, as Jimmy Iovine seems hell-bent on keeping 50 on his roster until Fif delivers an album worthy of some fanfare.
“My Crown” has 50 Cent staking claim to the throne over quirky Focus… production, replete with a Reggae-Hop flavor, and starts the project off on a positive note. That’s quickly forgotten, as 50 awkwardly becomes the first rapper (Hip Hop nerds, feel free to fact-check here) to ever rhyme about his philanthropic efforts as an indication of how much he’s rolling in dough on “United Nations”: “I’m back off a paycation / Can you believe it? I’m getting paid on vacation / Yeah, I’mma keep niggas forever hatin’ / They thought I was going down, now look, I’m levitatin’ / I’m with Deepak, meditatin’… / Funding the World Food Program / Finna solve world hunger, goddamn.” The very idea has got to leave a bad taste in the listener’s mouth, and the execution—lyrics, production, and delivery—is a mess.
“Business Mind” is markedly better. Intertwining entrepreneurial pursuits of the legitimate and illegitimate varieties, the song finds 50 in his element over some cinematic production. Featured artist Hayes is more than adequate on the cut, and seems to elicit a better effort from Fif. “Leave the Lights On” has positively fonky production, but it’s wasted on 50’s mundane bedroom talk. “Be My Bitch” calls to question whether Fif took this project seriously at all, as Brevi’s hook and singing can only be described as laughable. “Can I Speak To You” is actually a nice closer, with ScHoolboy Q providing some much-needed energy on the mic, but it’s too little too later.
Given that 5 clocks in at just over 30 minutes, it should be an extremely tight, cohesive project. It’s not. Whether label issues or the daunting prospect of matching his past success are the reason, 50 just isn’t having fun making music anymore. He appears to have been going through the motions since 2007’s Curtis, with 5 being the latest example. And it’s not just 50 on the mic that’s the problem; the G-Unit general’s ear for production, which used to be a strength of his, has completely deserted him. Perhaps Jimmy Iovine is onto something by refraining from releasing 50’s final album on his contract, or maybe that’s what has 50 releasing such subpar material. It’s a chicken-and-egg question, but the answer doesn’t really matter. What’s relevant is the quality of 5: Murders By Numbers. If it’s any indication of what 50’s future releases will sound like, things indeed look bleak.

Love him or hate him but 50 is 50 man and on this new mixtape all he is doing is exactly that, being himself. Granted he isn’t at the GRODT point anymore because he isn’t hungry. But there’s def some hints of genius on this release. “Money” “NY” and Can I Speak to You. He does need to chill with the girl cuts. 3-4 is way too much for a 10 song LP. And the production is still not quite there yet either. His ear is def a lil off, but getting back to the right place little by little.

I’ll put it like this. I’m a long time 50 fan and all, but I’m definitely glad I didn’t have to pay for this “album”. This project is basically on par with “The Big 10” and “The Lost Tape”, in that it’s fairly decent in some areas, but overall it’s not spectacular and it’s rather forgettable. The reviewer mentioned the “Curtis” album, and I’ll take that album, as well as “Before I Self Destruct” (his most underrated album) and the “War Angel LP” over this Murder By Numbers effort and Big 10 and Lost Tape. If this MBN is any indication of what “Street King Immortal” will sound like, it may be time to hang it up.

Banks is defiantly more lyrical than 50, also the reason the beats were not very good on this “Free Album” is because on GRODT, TM, C & BISD had Dr. Dre & Eminem as executive producers and now it’s looks like for “Street King Immortal” he IS gonna have them in that role now. He just needs to attack the album from a creative direction maybe make it a concept album? Banks is defiantly more lyrical than 50, also the reason the beats were not very good on this “Free Album” is because on GRODT, TM, C & BISD had Dr. Dre & Eminem as executive producers and now it’s looks like for “Street King Immortal” he IS gonna have them in that role now. He just needs to attack the album from a creative direction maybe make it a concept album? But yeah I would like to see 50 leave Shady, Aftermath, Interscope on a good note so he’s got A LOT of hard work to do judging by this attempt.

The Big 10 was solid and I enjoyed The Lost Tape, but this one is absolutely terrible. 50 isnt bad at all. But his golden-age is over. I wanna compare him to a snoop dogg (i guess..more or less). They both had alotta attention from rap beef, they had/have side projects (shows, businesses, etc), they always try to follow music trends (auto-tune, singing rapping..) and they constantly put out albums despite their sales declining.
My point is..50cent isnt a bad rapper. Hell always have at least a few songs that are solid (more if your a fan). But, its like he tries to hard to be relevant. Must people are like..”dude your a multi-millionaire business mogul/rapper so why are you tryin so hard..?”. Starting beef with Fat Joe and Jadakiss becuz they did a song with Ja Rule and then Rick Ross (which btw he lost)..He’s rain ended musically for the most part but I think he can make some noise off the mic becuz he seems like a good business man. Im kinda late but after reading the review i felt the need to comment. This Album/Mixtape when i first heard it i thought it was fire. Not every song but out of the 10 songs i fucked with 8. Be my bitch tho commercial and not my taste for some reason was always on repeat. That shit with School boy and the Business mind track(that was a feature to can’t think who) also were songs i couldn’t listen to only once. I had those on repeat.
Point is i don’t this shit was a classic like GRODT or as good as TM. But it was on par or probably better then Curtis. Some songs definitely game me that old 50 feel. The production on GRODT was some of the best production ever. If the product on this was as good as GRODT it would be just as good. Cause i felt lyrically 50 was on his shit.
And im not a 50 fan. And the only reason why i stop bumping the Album is cause i been stuck on Nas’ life is good Album. 2.5 is too low. I would give it a 3.5 out of 5. And the only reason why i wouldn’t give it a 4 is because after i hear the whole Album/Mxtape i wanted more. Basically the Album is too short but it bangs.
Also i want to mention how BISD was a really good Album that was slept on. I loved that CD. Overall 50 has put out some really good Albums. Curtis might have been his weakest project and that wasn’t bad. I ain’t a 50 fan but i fucks with him more then 95% of the niggas out now.
3.5/5 More closer to a 4/5 but it was to short. In alot of cases tho short Albums are great.(illmatic or Makeveli) But this doesn’t have that game changer feel like Illmatic or Makeveli had.
I agree with you, 50’s albums have generally been pretty good and didn’t deserve the hate they got. Murder By Numbers isn’t really an album anyway, as you already pointed out it’s way too short and there are no big features or big producers. Street King Immortal will surely be bigger and better than this tape.

Overall after listening, hopefully 50 can talk less and perform more on Street Immortal. I want him to do music he WANTS to do but it would be nice to see him act like the grown ass man he is and talk about his real life; instead of being 50 slangin’ guns and drugs eff’n bitches I’d like to see his true emotion shine through on a track. Not a Eminem attempt (Recovery) to appease fans with shit you “think” they want.
This is not an example of 50’s skill.. The Lost Tape and Big 10 were both great.. this is his worst offering.. I give it a 2/5 just for the 2 strong tracks it did present.
