A new profile of Young Thug on Rolling Stone finds the Rich Gang managed artist revealing details about his time spent in a juvenile-detention center as a teenager as well as the incident that led to his sentence.
During an interview with Rolling Stone writer Simon Vozick-Levinson, Young Thug also opened up about his current life.
“I’m loving it,” Young Thug said, speaking from a studio session. “Who wouldn’t want to be me right now?”
Birdman, who signed Thug to his Rich Gang label for a management deal earlier this year, is also quoted in the piece, saying, “Without a doubt, he’s going to be a superstar. He’s special.”
“He looks to me like an animal locked in a cage, ready to eat the world up,” Birdman said separately in the profile.
Addressing his current schedule in the studio, Young Thug admitted, “I never leave. All day, every day, every second. Gotta keep the money coming in.”
Explaining how he transitioned into rap after getting into trouble as a child, Young Thug mostly shrugged off the career choice.
“Anyone can rap if you’ve got brains,” he said. “So I just went with it.”
“I was in the streets at eight, nine years old,” he said. “I was going to school so my dad and mom would keep buying me clothes, but when I got out I did what I wanted to do – fighting, all kinds of shit.”
After describing how he landed in a juvenile-detention program for four years—”I broke my teacher’s arm,” he said. “Took his ass out. Pussy-ass nigga.”—Thug explained how the program didn’t keep him away from trouble.
“Seven in the morning to six in the afternoon,” he offered of his daily life in the program. “No windows or nothing, like a real jail. Lot of punishment. I didn’t do shit there but gamble, smoke and fuck.”
