Yelawolf Talks Race, Interscope, Longevity

As Yelawolf’s Radioactive hit shelves this week, the Shady Records signee spoke on an oft-discussed topic: race in Hip Hop.

“I don’t hate the term ‘white rapper,'” he explained. “It’s fully relevant and will always be… It’s important to hold to the culture as it is, no matter how abrasive that [term] might sound or it might be. Race is still real and you got to recognize it.”

In an interview with Billboard, the emcee explained how things got rolling after he took part in Wiz Khalifa’s “Deal or No Deal” tour.  “After that [tour], things just started happening,” said Yela, who then explained why Interscope was a good fit for him. “The big difference is walking into a meeting with Jimmy Iovine at his house as opposed to an office, and getting congratulations for all we’ve done, and they’re just saying, bluntly, ‘We just want to be involved. We want to be a docking station for you to come and refuel and go back out and do what you do.’ That’s exactly what they said, ‘fuel station.’ It feels right-important.”

Yelawolf revealed lofty goals for himself. “We all want longevity. I have a ten-year goal, so I could be like David Grohl or something. I want to be like [Eminem], [Jay-Z], Anthony Kiedis, Kid Rock. They’re getting older and they’re great, touring the world, making a good living. That’s the goal I’m trying to achieve.”

    1. A guy who doesn’t even have a short-term chance is wishing for longevity. Lol

If you want longevity, how about you make albums that aren’t blatant rip-offs of Recovery, like Radioactive was. Pop bull shit.

      1. your a fool must be tone deaf b this album a classic all original. how thins anything like eminem. not even in the same category. you a dweeb stop hating ya fraggle

      2. while I don’t think it was a classic i did enjoy it and I totallyu agree that it was nothing like recovery – fuckin haters probably don’t even listen – just reading ignorant reviews

      3. i thought yela put out a pretty good record personally. alot of people are hatin on this man yet i bet their favorite rappers are gucci, waka n shit like that which is fine if thats what u like. noones lookin for lyrics style n substance. they jus want a hot beat n some simple bullshit 2 bob their heads to at the club. yelawolf is to intelligent for alot of these dumbasses. his fast delivery is to much for their slow brains to handle. the haters are now dissmissed. bitches. slumerican/ghetovision/shady

      4. You guys are fucking stupid. Yelawolf? Intelligent? If you think Yelawolf is smart, then you must be dumber than shit. And how did this album NOT sound like recovery? A shit ton of soft rock ballads with droning poorly sung hooks, unfunny punchlines, and stupid guest appearances? They’re the exact same fucking album. Which makes sense, cause Eminem exec. produced Radioactive.

If you’re going to say I’m a “hater” how bout you back it up with some things that don’t totally blow about this album?

      1. shud be ashamed of urself u sound so ignorant u dont like someone based on race that makes u a lame borderline racist

      2. lol this guy just trolls on every hip hop site..he’s all over rap radar too putting a bunch of shit about how gucci is the goat hahaha i’m convinced he’s just saying outrageous shit to get attention since there is no possible way a person without downs could come up with the same opinion

      3. I agree with the first anonymous dude who replied to ur bullshit u know fuck all bout hip hop kid. And yelawolf sounds nothing like lil wayne.. Does wayne rap as fast as he does?, infact I aint never heard yela mentioning lil wayne, so I highly doubt he’s trying to be him. Oh an eminem is wack? Lol gtfo I bet u consider waka flocka shame, soulja boy and gucci lame good rappers. SHADY!!!!

    2. I BEEN COUNTING AND THIS IS THE 4TH TIME YELLOWISH TALKS ABOUT BEING A WHITE RAPPER I GUESS THAT’S HIS EXCUSE FOR HAVING LOW SALES AND A FLOP OF A ALBUM SO HE CAN SAY THAT WHITE PEOPLE ARE LOOKED DOWN AT IN THE INDUSTRY AND EMINEM ONLY SALES DUDE IS LIKE A BROKEN RECORD

    3. Yea I agree his album wasnt wat it was hyped to be but than again are albums now a days really what ppl make them out to be? Like come on it’s his first album ppl damnn was lil waynes very first solo album “The block is hot” the best? Umm no that shit was fucken wack and eminems first album that shit sold what. Like 2 copies? And I’m not talking about the slim shady lp I’m talking about his album from 96 called “infinite” it was so bad that he got dropped from his label. The point his it’s his first album so we all gotta start somewhere right?
