Will Smith has been enjoying his return to music of late and has proclaimed his lyrical greatness in a new Lyrical Lemonade freestyle.
In the hard-hitting “Lunch Break” freestyle, the rapper and actor is not shy in making his case as a Hip Hop legend, comparing himself to a number of soccer superstars.
“Hip Hop’s Messi, Neymar and Ronaldo / Goooal! Scored on these boys / I’ve won damn near every award on these boys / Sold-out movie theaters and even tours on these boys / Feelin’ like a mop, wipe the floor with these boys,” he raps over a hard-hitting trap beat.
Smith also brags about how he has overcome adversity, seemingly alluding to the fallout from his infamous slap on Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars.
“I be overcoming shit that y’all be having trouble with / Let ’em run they mouths, I mean really, that’s what come with this / They built a wall but I’m jumping it and loving it / They want me to be done with it, but I’m still havin’ fun with it,” he spits.
Watch it below.
The freestyle comes shortly after Will Smith dropped Based on a True Story, his first album in 20 years.
The 14-track project finds the 56-year-old addressing a number of talking points in his life, including his much-scrutinized marriage to Jada Pinkett Smith and aforementioned assault on Chris Rock.
“Personal life with my wife — mind your business, it’s complicated,” he admits on “You Lookin’ For Me?,” referencing their highly publicized separation and Jada’s past “entanglement” with singer August Alsina.
“Int. Barbershop – Day,” which plays out like a barbershop debate between staff and customers, touches on his so-called “cancelation” following his violent Oscars outburst.
Smith previously revealed that JAY-Z inspired the title of the album.
He said in an interview with Sway in the Morning: “Before I started [the album], I made two phone calls. I talked to Jay and I talked to Kendrick. I said, ‘Hey, I want to get back to music. What’s the advice?’
“Jay said, ‘Don’t fake your story. You gotta say what’s true for you. You’ll be looking at the younger rappers and you want that to be true for you, but you don’t live like that.’ He was like, ‘Be true to your story. Tell your story.’ And that’s where I got the Based on a True Story, from Jay.”
The Bad Boys star then recalled Kendrick’s advice: “Kendrick, he paused and said, ‘Man, just say that shit you’ve always been fucking scared to say.’ It was basically the same thing. It was like, be honest.”
Big Willie has moved into almost a pop persona, and this has been for years, ever since he started acting. He was once a force in real hiphop with DJ Jazzy Jeff, but I can hear the older will in this somewhat. Just still sounds very pop
You 56 and you still rapping, uuhhhhhhh
Rap is not a kid’s music. It grew from a young place but it’s music. You can have kids’ music in every genre, sir or ma’am
People say this because most rap is immature and childish. But there’s grown man rap too. Every gentry has this. But rap fans are mostly ignorant and can’t be nuanced.
@He Sucks What a stupid, tired take…. 🙄
Duane Martin about to clap Will’s cheeks to that horrible freestyle.⏸️
Could only listen to this for like 10 seconds. Go home Will.
