Westside Gunn Responds To ‘Hate’ Over New Album ‘And Then You Pray For Me’

Westside Gunn hasn’t let criticism of his new album phase him.

The Griselda head honcho took to Instagram on Sunday (October 15) to share his feelings at the response to And Then You Pray For Me, his brand-new project released just days prior.

He shared a video of Officially Ice, one of the co-hosts of The Joe Budden Podcast, praising the record during the show.

“On first listen, this is top 3 rap album this year for me,” Ice said. “This album is crazy. It sounds like he made an album for me… I’m like, wait, this is an Ice album!”

“That’s fire,” Budden chimed in after hearing a snippet of the Ty Dolla $ign-assisted track “Chloe.”

But according to Gunn, the reaction to the album hasn’t been all positive.

“[T]he same ppl that I THOUGHT knew me and what I stood for is the main ones leaving hate comments,” he wrote on IG. “I’ve experienced for the first time in my career where it’s literally bots that was sent to put negative attn on my album in the comments.”

And yet, he continued, “I still smile with every VVS Diamond tooth in my mouth showing bc whether u get it or not I’m still the [Greatest Of All Time] AND I FORGIVE YOU.”

Gunn has claimed that And Then You Pray For Me, a sequel to his 2020 release Pray For Paris, will be his last studio album.

“[This is] going to be the last album where I take the time to say ‘this is an album,’” Gunn told Rolling Stone. “When I was doing the Hitler Wears Hermes series, I was doing all them projects like mixtapes. I was recording the whole shit in two, three days. I’m not saying I won’t come with a five-song EP with Madlib or I won’t do a seven-song EP with Alchemist or I won’t rap. I’ll do all of that, but making a studio album, I’m done with all that.”

    1. This album killin what drake just put out and Westside knows he could have came better. Solid B on the album.

    2. I like Griselda and trap beats, but they don’t go well with West style. Conway and Benny sound good over them, but West way too offbeat and low energy for these beats. Album is garbage. Oh and you Griselda apologists are ass too.

    3. Ya ok Chris brown..oops I mean , ya Chris brown…what others characters will you be playing lol…that’s Chris brown in a body suit

    4. Ya ok Chris brown..oops I mean , ya Chris brown…what others characters will you be playing lol…that’s Chris brown in a body suit…Conway is Wale btw

    5. Listening to this album after looking forward to it being is been a depressing year for music especially hip hop I was hoping for this to be a good album. However, after listening to it I was greatly disappointed. Is not that every song is bad. There are some good songs I can replay, but as a whole project the beat selection for many of these songs was just not fitting for Westside Gunn. It really was missing the Griselda sound. Although I appreciate him taking a different approach and experimenting with something new is just these modern type trap beats are not fitting for Westside Gunn his style works better with the boom bap type beats that made us grew to love Griselda. Especially being a sequel for Pray To Paris it sadly to meet my expectations and was really missing the Griselda sound that made them. Still can respect he tried something new.

      1. Jesus loser. Write a ducking essay about it already. Ever had pussy? It’s more fun than comment sections. Dork.

      2. Well fucking said!! This is exactly how I felt about the album. It felt like everyone that he featured took over and instead sounding like he was featuring on THEIR song. I was so excited for more Pray For Paris style beats and he seemed to play to too safe to do that.

    6. I really liked the album but I didn’t like the Ty dolla sign song because I don’t like “porn type rap”
This album is not for everyone, in fact most of Griselda and especially westside gunn, is actually for very few that are really into this type of rap. That’s the way we want it, im glad some of you haters are typing blasphemous comments, none of the griselda records catalog is for you.
Some of the album highlights are Kitchen lights, mamas prime time, kostas, flygod 2x, jd wrist, Babylon bis, jalen rose and Mr. Everything ft. Jeezy.
Stove god kills it the whole album. I wonder if these “cringe worthy”!trolls in the comments actually listened to it. I bet not. And then I pray for you to get a life and stop clicking on articles to hate.

    7. The album is dope. Very solid. He just put too many tracks on it. There are at least 8 bangers, which is bananas for 2023. Stove God Cooks and Rome Streetz kill him on his own shit.

    8. I respect he tried to switch things up but fr he could’ve gave us the griselda sound and limit the trap beats to just two songs or let Benny and Conway do their thing on them Now we need to hear Michelle record album that’s only right u still flygod and I still support the movement this album just wasn’t it

    9. Westside isn’t a rapper he is a business man that puts out albums for the name recognition and money. He is essentially the Birdman…Diddy…Master P…RZA of the Griselda camp. His albums are a way to introduce new styles and artist. Purely promotion of the brand…he’s got nothing to lose. The lyrical talent is with the features.

    10. The album sucks especially compared to its predecessor. Gunn raps his mf ass off on Pray4Paris, who can forget his lyrical stylings in those especially grimy boombap sounds. He rapped alongside modern day greats like Wale & Tyler & more than held his own. I’ll bet my entire life that Westside Gunn drops another album that honours his boombap upbringing in the next 2-3 years.

    11. If this is his last official album then he went out with a whimper…its BAD bad. No laser guidance…just collateral damage everywhere. Conway and Benny sounded incredible on the joints they were featured on…then West came in and slowed the whole operation, almost to a halt…i didnt hear one iota of effort in RAPPING from him. Yikes.
