Maybach Music Group alum Wale made headlines this week after he confronted two NBA commentators who were taking potshots at him during a Washington Wizards game. Now, in a recent interview with Power 99’s Cosmic Kev, the D.C.-born emcee discusses the incident.
Wale took the blame for his actions, saying that he got caught up in the moment and handled the commentators’ jokes poorly. He added that he should have approached them at a different time and with more respect than he did.
“Anything at this point makes me sound volatile ‘cus when you’re in the moment, you don’t really think about that, but now I’m thinking, ‘Okay, I’m around all these white people, and I’m a black dude with dreads and tattoos walking upstairs to confront somebody’…I could see why that would be [frowned upon],” he explained. “Was I going over there to say, ‘Hello sir, my name is Wale, could you not talk bad about me?’ No, but I was going over there to be like, ‘Yo, my man, you gotta have a little respect, you’re in my town. I know you’re trying to do your job, and I ain’t trying to disrespect you.’ Whatever, but timing is everything, I could’ve waited. I can take that [criticism].”
The incident began after Wale was seen heckling Toronto Raptors small forward Rudy Gay during a recent game. The two commentators began poking at fun Wale, saying that, “he’s not Drake, that’s for sure.”
Wale isn’t the only rapper who’s been stirring up trouble with the NBA as of late. Lil Wayne also made headlines after he claimed that the NBA kicked him out of a Miami Heat game and has banned him from attending future league events.
