After her son Waka Flocka Flame’s tour bus was shot at in North Carolina Thursday afternoon, Debra Antney took time to address various media outlets she felt inaccurately reported the story. Antney, who also serves as Waka’s manager, spoke on how her son/client is such a polarizing figure among Hip Hop fans.
“It is safe to say we took no part in this,” Antney said of the shooting. “We had nothing to do with this. This was someone else coming up with random shooting doing whatever else it is that they do. Were they even shooting at the bus? Who knows? There were other cars that were hit, but because the bus was hit and it happens to be Waka Flocka, it made good news.”
Antney added that all members of the security team, as well as Waka Flocka Flame himself were licensed to carry weapons. During the nearly five-minute long video, she also made some interesting connections between Hip Hop’s history and the recent accusations that her son is involved in gang activity. During the raid on his home in December of 2010, Georgia police accused Waka Flocka Flame of violating Georgia’s Criminal Street Gang and Terror Prevention Act. Waka would later deny the claims.
“All of you that think all we are about is hood stuff and promoting violence,” Antney added. “Hip Hop is a way of life. That’s what it was first created from, really. It was either your past experiences or somebody else’s experiences that you were putting out. Things that were going on—that’s what you were putting out in music. It was sort of like relief…”
