Renowned fashion designer Virgil Abloh, who rose to fame with his luxury streetwear collections, predicts the very clothing which made him famous is running on borrowed time.
In a recent interview with DAZED, Abloh discussed how his role in fashion has changed since that awkward 2009 photo featuring Kanye West and several briefcases.
When asked where he sees the future of streetwear, he said, “Wow. I would definitely say it’s gonna die, you know? Like, its time will be up. In my mind, how many more t-shirts can we own, how many more hoodies, how many sneakers? [apple_news_ad type=”any”]
However, a bulk of Abloh’s career is based on t-shirts, hoodies and sneakers. When he released his Pyrex Vision collection in 2012, it quickly became the hottest streetwear brand of its time. The follow-up collection, Off-White, is one of only a few Hip Hop inspired brands to successfully cross over to high fashion.
Despite critics labeling the Illinois-born designer a “hypebeast” for his high priced zip ties and tongue-in-cheek quotation marks, consumers purchased the pricey pieces so fast, Abloh’s following became cult-like.
Hip Hop fashion icons such as Rihanna and A$AP Rocky embraced Abloh’s luxurious urban brand. With all this in consideration, hearing Abloh himself saying that streetwear is going to die comes as such a shock.
As Abloh’s role in fashion has changed, apparently so have his views. In 2018, the 39-year-old designer was named the artistic director of Louis Vuitton, one of the oldest fashion maisons in Paris. From where he sits, he sees the next wave of fashion leaving the streets and going back to old school basics.
“I think we’re gonna hit this like, really awesome state of expressing your knowledge and personal style with vintage – there are so many clothes that are cool that are in vintage shops and it’s just about wearing them,”he said. “I think that fashion is gonna go away from buying a boxfresh something; it’ll be like, ‘Hey I’m gonna go into my archive.'”

he’s right though. a lot of folks try to cover thier lack of personal style with expensive brands and gear. a ton of these rappers look like bums of you can see past the labels. no taste.
Have you seen the stuff he designs? Have the shit a saw was men wearing skirts so what does that have to do with with streatwear? This cross-colours not cross dressers
Streetwear will never die and alot of rappers have stylists anyway they do hide behind these big names who dont want u in their clothing but a person who appreciate streetwear knows how to swag and support the real shout out to the black owned clothes makers
TOLD VIRGIL WRITE BRICK ON MY BRICK!!
I been on the wave he’s talking about ..NEXT
Just checked out his latest creations got fa* written all over it so you can have it
I rate the work of Virgil but streetwear been here since the late 80s/early 90s, it ain’t going anywhere. You see the Fila’s, Kappa’s, even Cross Color’s making a comeback with gen Z. You see the luxury brands constantly biting what’s popping on the streetwear scene, so this is sounding like a statement just to say shit. We don’t need stuffy eurotrash names to be the only thing people are wearing, keep on creating culture out there ya’ll.
Who??
Depends on price and what you consider streetwear. Champion, Timberland for example won’t be going anywhere (if you consider that streetwear, I do). It won’t be going any wear because it’s affordable and not overly trendy. Some of this shit that’s hitting the streets is clownish, over priced, and is only suitable for a kid in 7th grade.
Facts. Make street wear that’s for grown men. Not kids in school
First of all, people in cities where it gets cold will always were hoodies. Secondly, I buy new t- shirts every season. So what is dude saying is false. Street wear will always be around. If his sales are dying off then he needs to do something different with his hoodies and t-shirts.
Yea but they talking about $200 tshirts and $700 hoodies
Nah, MF’er. People are just crackin wise to the bullshit you were trying to pass off as street wear.
Another negro that let his boujee grow because he got “approval” from an European. He should speak for only himself and men that cut pages out of gq and vogue
Hes only saying this because his employers are demanding so.ething dofferent next year i.e. they need to seel their own brands..enough time has passed for dumbass people to have forgotten the gucci shit and start patronizing these highend brands. Difference is, they have a black faces to peddle the shit…virgil and dapper dan come to mind.
My problem with street fashion in 2019 it’s priced crazy, back in 2002-03 you could get a dope outfit from Akademiks ,Enyce or 555soul or one of those at the mall for like $150/200 and be fresh in high school now that won’t buy you a Off White or Vetements tee shirt.
