UK Rapper Lowkey Announces Retirement From Music

UK rapper Lowkey has announced his decision to quit the music industry. In a statement on his Facebook fan page on the evening of Tuesday 18th April, the outspoken emcee told followers; “After many months of contemplation I have decided to step away from music and concentrate on my studies.” He thanked supporters and explained;  “the ego is a destructive thing and I feel this business and these social networks in particular have a tendency to feed it in an unhealthy way.”

The South London-born rapper has achieved widespread infamy, not only through his music but through his political activism, and his staunch pro-Palestinian stance has lead many to view his lyrical content as controversial.

Gifted for being able to paint vivid images in succinct musical verses as well as exposing injustices in carefully constructed yet seamlessly flowing lyrics, Lowkey’s back catalogue includes the recently released, critically acclaimed album Soundtrack To The Struggle, which also featured Immortal Technique and Mavado.

His departure from the music industry very quickly spawned thousands of responses from fans, and although deactivating his page shortly after, Lowkey did offer a hint of a return to the music scene in his statement; “Maybe at some point I will get back into it again but at this stage I feel I should direct my energy in different, more helpful directions.” He signed off; “thank you for all those who have supported me over the years. See you on the other side people.”

    1. he’ll be missed by many fans, the fact that his retirement from hip hop has made it onto this website shows how much he has achieved over the years with no record label or major representative behind him.
the guy is a gifted musician and a very hard worker, he’ll be successful no matter what he does.
      P.A Salute!

    2. He was just on a track with HOPSIN on Young Noble’s mixtape called – The End think it was his last track.

    3. Leaves a massive hole in the political side of hip hop music, very well educated and a deep conscious MC seen him in manchester when he was warm up for Talib Kweli. I went more so to watch Lowkey me and a friend of mine said we will havta go one of his own shows next time instead of being a supporting act…. Not gonna happen now though.

      1. I’m sure your mother wishes she would have shoved a coat hanger up that cavernous hole she calls a vagina when she was pregnant with you.

      1. Who cares where hes from Slick Rick was from UK and he was huge when he was around. These days Drake is one of the biggest rappers and he’s from Canada. Why be so ignorant?

      2. its brothers like you who are ignorant to seeing real talent… just like the whites did to the black brothers back in the day… shame on your lame ignorant ass.. go suck off lil wayne so he can rap for the 1000th time about a hoe suckin him off.. I aint famous and get action no need to rap about it sad silly twat.

    5. Damn. One of the best lyricist not just in the uk, but in the world, if you don’t know about him, you should do yourself a favor and look him up.

      1. hes a well known political activist whos been big in the uk for years, if he even tried paying immortal tech he would get laughed at as neither of em are corporate sellouts who compromise art for cash

    7. Just because your dumb ass doesn’t know him, doesn’t mean he’s unknown.. Ignorant ass, house nigga.

      1. And that’s why the world hates America. They thinks the world revolves around them. Xenophobic (or is that too big a word for your small mind?)

      2. You hate America yet you are on an American hip hop website catching feeling about an overrated has been who never was. Here’s a word for you..Illegitimate..As in that’s what the UK hip hop scene and that’s what you probably are since a bunch of Americans probably ran a train on her.You feel better?

      3. TALKIN ABOUT HIP HOP YEAH UK SHOULD FUCK OFF…NO XENOPHOBIA OR HOMOPHOBIA OR SUM SHIT INVOLVED…WHAT A WEAK MINDED NIGGA U ARE…JUST FUCK OFF

    8. he bitched out, theres plenty rappers more popular who deal with bigger egos without complaining, its called keep it G and keep it moving, i guess he couldnt ride it out like a real nigga, he must not have wanted it badly enough, never heard of him anyway, good luck with your little spelling and science quizzes, we out chea

      1. i agree. This garbage rapper has already been garbage… now he has added QUITTER to his garbage repertoire.

      2. bro u chat shit, u can never be as succesfull as lowkey, and plus all thoes american rappers dont have no meaning to their lyrics all they talk about is sex and money but yet all you dumb fuks just bob ur head up and down to the beat.

      1. it’s “Scene”, not “seen”. Obviously you need a teacher such a KRS-1 not Lowkey the clown. He’s garbage.

    10. He has more sense to retire than childish 40+ year old rappers with wives and children still in the club gettin’ groupie love from hoodrat baby mamas.

    11. I don’t know why I sink so low as to actually answer some dumb fucktard like y’all that probably think that Wayne and Rick Ross are real Hip Hop. You guys don’t know shit about Lowkey. The man has toured the world without even a record label. Done so much important work that your ignorant asses couldn’t comprehend it. He’s shit? No, it’s your brain that’s so full of shit that you can’t comprehend the artistic level of his music and his love and honesty for Hip Hop. There’s a reason for why he’s gotten the recognition of Public Enemy, M1, Da Circle and Immortal Technique. ‘Nuff said.

      1. he’s whack. he retired cause that’s what quitters do. how can you let someone who QUITS be of motivation. #Quit

    12. haha at the hate. seriosuly you should check out his stuff, fire in the booth, alphabet assassin, there isnt a rapper here in u.s that can top those right now, and i love nas, krs-1 em. just watch it and youll be amazed thats all. dont hate like a middle school kid.

    13. Lowkey is a great rapper touching upon numerous social justice causes and support for many oppressed people. Hope he comes back to the music industry, till then, take it ez.

    14. It is disgusting to see how people can act all big, gangster like bad man over the internet. Americans need to start realising that americans never invented Hip Hop, it was brothers and sister in the struggle who created Hip Hop not America. And at this moment America is killing hip hop, by making Hip Hop present and represent the industry Ideology.

    15. Stay strong man, watch out for the Illuminati though!
Also good luck with your studies!

    16. LOWKEY is INCREDIBLE END OF FUCKING STORY HE RAPPED RAPS OTHER RAPPERS COULDN’T THINK OF ,HIS RAPS MEANT SOMETHING ! and for that fuck-tard hater that keeps trynna say shit but stays anonymous good job fuck for being an idiot 🙂

    17. Cant believe what im seeing here, so much hate.
After listening 1 track of this man, how could you not like it?!
Maybe its just the wrong site to post, much of the sheeple here are brainwashed by RickRoss and Lil fucking Wayne.
In my eyes if you cant feel Lowkey’s music its says more about you then about him.
Much much love from Holland and I wich you all the best Lowkey, you gave music a new dimension to me and for that I cant thank you enough.
Peace and love! (also to the haters)

      1. People like what they can relate to. Honestly, it’s not even close… ability + realness (honesty) + content. It probably all went to his head.

      2. P.S. “Can’t relate to anyone, that’s something that you can’t face” = false. I found Long Live Palestine and heard it, prompting me to ask where he’s been, then by some coincidence listened to the rest of his stuff and found the same things. I think he’s right in “I Believe,” and for that people call me arrogant. There’s no other way to describe it when you’re writing something and not really thinking, just relaying.

    18. Lowkey changed my life. He takes me to a place where very few people can take me. The emotion in his music, combined with his articulate yet understandable message was unparalleled. His ability to tell a story and connect with the listener is truly mind blowing. One of the best rappers of my generation, I don’t care what anyone says. If only Lowkey could read this… we need him badly.

      1. Your words summarize my thoughts on this man exactly. I’ve never had so much respect for a person as I have for Lowkey. He will be missed by myself and many others, but I thank him for all he his given me (and all of his fans). I trust the mans decision to retire from music out of respect.

      1. What about you and me? Do we not have more to give? Your sitting here scrutinizing a man who has done more to positivley influence this world then either of us have, and your only source of complaint is he did not do enough? Sounds like you may find some benefit in turning that critical lens around on yourself.

    19. he had that power to spread the message.. for me he shud carry on with the large fan base he had was only gting bigger took a large step back tym for sme1 else to push the message ..wasted opportunity had more to gve

    20. Lowkey never wanted to lead, he only wanted to help shape young minds positively, which he did, therefore it doesn’t matter if he’s gone forever, what’s of consequence is what his erstwhile fans are willing to do with the knowledge he’s imparted. It’s up to us to continue Lowkey’s legacy, not Lowkey to shape ours….

    21. I think this is the time to show we really understood Lowekey’s message. As he says in ‘when I die’ we have to help him live on, to fight for a better world and by fight i don’t mean a brainless human genocide revolution but a fight which spreads the real moral values and the truth. I think Lowkey never thought about a bloody revolution. He tried and succeeded for many of us to change the world from the interior of the self, a self who always keeps his mind awake (hand on your gun) and shares the truth with compassion in a nonviolent way (its millions i’ll return). Peace up!

    22. This can’t be true man! He’s literally in my top m.c.’s list. I understand his decision as well. Must be tough trying to juggle the media and still teach us and entertain us. I didn’t even get the chance to hit him up with a beat. lol Peace! Assalamualaikum ahki! We’ll be here if you change your mind ahki.

P.S. Ahki please just change your mind. Alhamdulilah!

    23. The albums that he did put out meant more than any other rapper could do with their entire careers. He said what he needed to say and was able to walk away from all the bullshit that rap is nowadays. Much respect to Lowkey!

    24. Oh shut up it was the fucking british government they put him in jail thats why he had to quit fuck u! Why dont u speak the fucking truth

    25. Is there any new information on Lowkey? Will he be making new stand on the scene? He is much needed and the face of conscious music around the world. I had the privilege of meeting him in Melbourne, Australia. He is an inspiration to us all and ashamed that we don’t have others like him.
