Tyler, The Creator has implored his fans to closely study Missy Elliott and her discography after the Virginia rapper broke down each of her iconic albums on Twitter.

Tyler took to his own Twitter account on Wednesday (December 7) to ask his younger listeners to focus in specifically on “Pass That Dutch” and the “Hot Boyz” video, both of which he said still blow his mind today.

“To my younger fans, go study all her album,” Tyler wrote in response to Missy’s original Twitter thread. “pass that dutch beat still blows my mind. Go watch the hot boyz video. See how she approached lick shots and gossip folks with her voice. capitol M!”

Tyler’s request comes after Missy Elliott reflected on her prolific creative partnership with Timbaland, which spanned five of her albums from Supa Dupa Fly in 1997 to This Is Not a Test in 2003.

While shedding light on the creative process behind each project, the Grammy-winning rap icon revealed that as her and Tim’s success grew, so did the pressure on their shoulders to deliver.

“My 1st album was stressfree because I didn’t have any expectations. My label told me they would give me my own label if I did 1 album so me & @timbaland completed this album in 2 weeks not knowing this would be the beginning of many more to come,” she wrote of Supa Dupa Fly, widely regarded as one of the greatest rap debuts of all time.

Missy then reflected on the challenges of making her follow-up albums and her commitment to pushing her sound — and Hip Hop as a whole — forward in a creative way.

“By this album I felt a small relief & I felt my 2nd album allowed me & @Timbaland to EXPERIMENT with my 3rd album outtaspace sounds since my 2nd album was theatrical with knockin beats,” she wrote of 2001’s Miss E… So Addictive. “We were open to showing what the FUTURE of music could sound like in our minds.”

This isn’t the first time Tyler, The Creator has asked his fans to do their Hip Hop homework. During his CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST Tour stop in Portland earlier this year, Tyler took a moment on stage to shout-out the likes of Q-Tip, RZA and DJ Drama, urging his fans to go back and listen to these greats.

“Because of the Internet now, a lot of kids don’t do their history. And the genre they’re a fan of — man, they don’t see how important a Gucci Mane is that all these kids are derivative of now,” he said. “So all y’all being here being a fan of this thing, please just do your history and learn and respect this thing that some people really hold dear.”

“I can’t lie, seeing a bunch of baby-ass white girls dancing to RZA beats in 2022 is fucking progression to me, bro,” he added. “It’s beautiful.”
