Dave “Trugoy” Jolicoeur died at the age of 54 on February 12. A cause of death is still unknown, but his passing was mourned by many of his Hip Hop peers including Pharrell, Common, Busta Rhymes, Questlove, Prince Paul, Queen Latifah, LL COOL J, Fat Joe, Chuck D, Black Thought, Redman, Bun B and more.
Nas also paid homage to Trugoy during his first headlining show at New York City’s Madison Square Garden on Friday (February 24). Mid-set, he paused the show to play the opening verse on De La’s hit single “Buddy” before yelling out, “Make some noise for Trugoy, De La Soul. Rest in Poetry!”
De La Soul have since announced they’ll be honoring Trugoy’s life and legacy with a special tribute concert in New York City. Dubbed “The DA.I.S.Y. Experience,” the performance will take place on Thursday (March 2) — a day before the group’s full catalog becomes available on streaming — at the iconic Webster Hall in Manhattan.
According to a press release, the venue will be “transformed with artwork from the group’s classic album, 3 Feet High and Rising,” while legendary DJs Stretch Armstrong, Clark Kent, Rich Medina and Tony Touch will curate a DJ set commemorating De La’s legacy.
Just 333 tickets — a nod to the group’s “The Magic Number” — are up for grabs and are available to reserve from Wednesday (March 1) via the concert’s official website.
Those who can’t make it can livestream the concert on Amazon Music’s Twitch channel from 8 p.m. ET, where they’ll also be treated to a series of interviews with friends of De La Soul and special guests.
