Too $hort‘s older brother, Wayne Shaw, has reportedly been shot and killed in East Oakland.

According to Oakland police, Shaw, who was 61, was shot on Wednesday (January 29) on a sidewalk as multiple people attempted to ram a vehicle through the entrance of a weed dispensary.

Shaw reportedly went outside to confront the attempted robbers but was shot, with the culprits then fleeing the scene. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead by paramedics.

“The suspects arrived to the location,” Oakland Police Department Lt. Gloria Beltran said. “They attempted to force their way into the property. While they were attempting their way in, the victim stepped out, was confronted by the suspects. The suspects fired several rounds at the victim.”

Police are also investigating Shaw’s connection with the marijuana business at the property as there are no records of a cannabis permit being issued for the address.

Too $hort has yet to comment on his brother’s death and police have yet to make any arrests.

The fatal shooting took place just a short distance away from where Too $hort has a street named after him.

The Bay Area rap legend was honored in Oakland in 2022 with the renaming of a three-block stretch on Foothill Boulevard to “Too $hort Way” following lobbying from local politicians.

December 10 was also declared Too $hort Day by then-Oakland mayor Libby Schaaf.

At the ceremony, which was held at Too $hort’s old high school, his Mount Westmore cohort Ice Cube spoke about the rap veteran’s impact on the local area.

“He decided to put his energy, his time, his creativity into something positive and something constructive,” Cube said. “He took the whole industry by himself in a lot of ways by being the spearhead and letting people know about Oakland, California and the Bay Area.”
