The Weeknd has hinted that his Trilogy album might be removed from streaming platforms.
The Toronto crooner jumped on Twitter on Sunday (November 13) to reveal that his 2012 compilation is not presented the way he wants fans to hear it due to missing samples and a different mix. Trilogy comprises of The Weeknd’s first three mixtapes: House of Balloons, Thursday and Echoes of Silence.
The compilation contains new mixes and samples on various songs, giving fans a slightly different listening experience from the original tapes. As a result, Abel is flirting with the idea of removing Trilogy altogether so that fans can properly experience his early mixtapes.
“If y’all wanna hear the trilogy how it’s supposed to be listened to … listen to House of Balloons, Thursday and Echoes of Silence individually,” The Weeknd explained. “Not all samples are on trilogy and the mix isn’t the original mix. But shout out trilogy but fyi, for the new fans, it isn’t an album.”
He continued: “I might get rid of the compilation just so there’s no more confusion, now that ALL the samples are finally cleared since December 17, 2021. But I also know there are fans of the compilation so I might not get rid of it. But just want it to be clear for all the new fans and weirdly older fans …”
If The Weeknd does indeed remove Trilogy from streaming platforms, fans not need worry as House of Balloons, Thursday and Echoes of Silence are still available in their original forms on Spotify, Apple Music and elsewhere. The mixtape trilogy is where it all for the XO hitmaker and features early favorites including “Wicked Games,” “Twenty Eight” and the Drake-assisted “The Zone.”
While he’s contemplating what do with some of his old material, The Weeknd is currently planning on giving his fans in Los Angeles, California, a Thanksgiving treat. The 32-year-old will bring back The After Hours Til Dawn Tour to SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, with a performance on Saturday, November 26 and a bonus date added on Sunday, November 27.
The two shows were planned after The Weeknd cut his September tour stop short after losing his voice just four songs into his concert. The singer announced the rescheduled shows via Twitter, confirming Mike Dean and Kaytranada will also be returning as the opening acts.
See this is why I never got into streaming. I dont support the idea of music being removed, period. I decide what I wanna listen to, not the artist, the label, cancel culture, etc.
Normally I agree but in this situation the streaming version only existed as a work around for sample clearance issues. Drake, Wayne, Weeknd, Big KRIT all have classic mixtapes that got butchered to be on streaming.
There are songs that are in Trilogy that aren’t on the original mixtapes. Which happen to be good. I also agree that music should not be removed or altered like the current trend with streaming.
Wiz Cabin fever opening track different on Spotify but still can find it on YouTube. I burnt the mixtape so I have the track somewhere in my collection and it’s fire!!
