The Roots Recall Near-Beef with the Fugees

In a recent interview DJ Whoo Kid on Shade 45, the Roots explained how they nearly feuded with the acclaimed Hip Hop group the Fugees. According to the Philadelphia crew’s drummer and producer ?uestlove, he had heard a rumor that famed trio – which was comprised of Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean and Pras – has subtly questioned their artistic authenticity as a Hip Hop band during a show.

“I’ll say that the closest we came to [a beef] – and it was more creative shit – I think it was a little something with the Fugees back then [in the ’90s],” said ?uestlove. “I heard a rumor, somebody called me and said they started doing some ‘Hip-Hop 101’ thing at their show and was like, you know, ‘If you see anybody else doing this [Hip Hop band] thing, remember you saw it here first,’ knowing that it was a lie. But that was the closest thing.”

      1. I would literally smack you if you said that in my presence. Or maybe I’d pull a metal chair out of my backpack- CaClack!
        YOUZ A HERB!

    1. The Roots suck balls. Who the fuck listens to a group that named themselves after a plant sprout. ?uestion is not even a word. Black Thought? That’s a satanic thought.

Listen to Gucci Mane for real hip hop

      It’s Gucci Time!

      1. @Troll

Check the lyrics. I still rock this…even BOUGHT the video. MCs don’t even know how to bring it like this anymore…FUCK we don’t even have MCs anymore!!!

        The implorer, the universe explorer
Treat MC’s like the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah
Leavin these niggaz open like a box of Pandora
With styles that’s newer than the world order
Approximately three quarters of y’all are water
        I straight deport ya
Then orchestrate your torture with roots of culture
The pilgrimmage to the line of scrimmage up against your image
Where life is a heist, and the strong get a percentage
It’s ill as a war and within it I’m the Lieutenant
that surrounds you like a peninsula to snatch the pennant
You fold like Japan’s futons and fans
While I design a plan to make a rapper step like a pedestrian
I crush a mountain into grands of sand
Your pain stains the hand that held the mic inserted to the stand
The desperado, that refuse to follow
The Fifth afficianado, break you up into parts like vibrato
I deep like the dark of the night
Niggaz is sweet and sound silly when they talk on the mic
They use the simple back and forth the same
        old rhythm that’s plain
        I’d rather UltraMagnetize your brain
It’s the hip-hop purist, that leave you lost like a tourist
inside the chorus, niggaz is bringin nothin for us
As we breakin em down to fractions, tell your squadron
It’s time to go to war, Respond/React

      2. Hey idiot, its not ?uestion, its ?uestlove and what right do you have to talk about Black Thought, cause you’re a Gucci Mane dick rider so its obvious that you have never had a thought in your life (a rational one atleast).

      3. “What type of real nigga name himself after a bag?” …Jeezy got him YEARS ago so anyone using gucci’s name as an avatar is really just clowning themselves.

    2. SMH @ People calling ither group whack, Hip hop standards are so lowered these days.

I guess Black Thought and Lauren Hill arent dope anymore because they have IQ’s over 40 and dont rap like they have downsyndrome, I understand, Have fun playing your Guci Mane records

    3. The Fugees got kinda cocky when The Score came out. None of them not named Lauryn had a right to say sh*t. Clef is cool, but his rapping isn’t all that, and would’ve easily been destroyed by Thought, Malik, Dice Raw, or any other rapper down with the Roots. Pras was always a non-factor when it came to the group. Dude was less of a factor than U-God.

    4. Both are legendary groups, but wow… glad nothing really went down. Black Thought would’ve got at the Fugees single handed ’cause he can flow for DAYS.

And to any dumb fuck stupid enough to say either group is whack… please listen to another genre ’cause you’re currently killing the culture with your useless, non-educated ass.

    5. Glad this didn’t become a war as Roots would’ve easily won that one. I think Clef n Pras got a little cocky once they got awarded them Grammy trophies. Lauryn was always humble. Then again, I would’ve suspected Pras to be the one saying anything since he did say something to the effect that dissed Jeru Da Damaja, and Jeru came back with a few bars on the “Wrath of the Math” album.

    6. I saw the subliminal subtext of this battle. I saw both groups on tour with GooDie MOb right after “The Score” came out and both groups were playing covers in their sets. Black Thought was on the WakeUp Show and asked “Who’s biting who?” in his freestyle. Mmmm…history.
