In honor of activist and Tupac Shakur‘s mother Afeni‘s 61st birthday, The Tupac Amaru Shakur Center For The Arts is hosting an exhibition on the woman with In Her Defense: The Exhibition.

Premiering February 1st, the installation will feature two key components. The first will be a gallery of documents, information and photography chronicling the 1969-1971 Panther 21 controversy. Afeni Shakur garnered national acclaim from her arrest in 1969 for the alleged attempt, with 20 other members of The Black Panther Party, to bomb over 156 New York City buildings, department stores and public offices. After her arrest, Shakur opted to defend herself. Throughout the ensuing two year trial, Shakur was largely incarcerated, where should be caring her son Tupac. Many of the artifacts on display are from Afeni‘s personal collection.

In addition, there will be a play of the same name in production. Both the play chronicling the event and the historical documents will be on display through March.
