Terminator X, who worked with Public Enemy for years, recently spoke with Crazy Hood about why he decided to retire from the music industry.
“I left the music business because I was fed up with the greed and cutthroat environment that it is—this includes Public Enemy,” Terminator X says. “That is not an environment I choose to be in. My family started an ostrich farm, which I participated in, but it is not the reason I left the music business.”
Since he left the industry, Terminator X says the genre’s gotten worse.
“I think the subject matter of modern Rap is, for the most part, the worst it’s ever been,” he says. “Most of what I hear out there is either sex, violence, or drugs. I would be happy if they would simply find anything else to rap about. That would be a good start.”
Terminator X says he has a theory as to why the genre has deteriorated in his eyes.
“The original Hip Hop has been lost to the music business,” he says. “The original Hip Hop music was done out of love of Hip Hop music and culture. Rap music today is a product of the music business which decides what it thinks is sellable and marketable. The DJ was one of the most important elements of Hip-Hop. Now, DJs in Rap music are almost irrelevant. The DJ has gone the way of the R&B band. In my opinion, the original Hip Hop music has been altered forever. Times change. Culture develops and changes. Such is life. Music will carry on and change always as everything else does. I hope the DJ and scratching will return to Rap music.”

Some people need to re-connect to the roots of why Hip Hop culture was created in the first place… Afrika Bambaataa found a way to inspire and uplift youth in a positive and creative fashion, He and the other fathers and mothers of culture CREATED Hip Hop as a POSITIVE, PEACEFUL way OUT of the gang life, drugs and violence in the government made slums & ghettos of America. We must also remember it was Co-intelpro that brought the crack and drugs into the Ghetto this was in direct retaliation to the good the black panthers were trying to do to uplift the people. But NO the corrupt powers that be didn’t like Positive, truthful rap or the Creative culture that brought people together & brought Empowerment to all people, the powers that be want to keep us all down… As Kool Moe Dee said; They (those who control the music industry) stopped playing KRS-ONE, and Public Enemy and Started Playing Gangster Rap. Someone made an investment in that.
Let us continue to present day 2014 (majority) of rappers drop the N-word multiple times in a song, they have no knowledge to base their rhymes on, they offer no positive message, they rep a negative lifestyle, demean women by portraying women as mere sex objects and they glorify violence and drugs. That is the OPPOSITE of TRUE HIP HOP CULTURE.

rap music is corporate now, they don’t want historians or certified representatives, they don’t want the 30+ year olds spitting the truths, all company needs is a base to unwillingly consume their product and diluting the content was/is necessary to do so
z100 is their perception of rap music, and mtv is how they visualize the community (but if you have comcast, mtv2 is buried far, far away from mtv) and they’re not gonna question it, hell, most of them are popular personality followers, not rap music fans
