Murder Is Leading Cause Of Death Of Rappers, Study Shows

A new study concerning the deaths of popular musicians shows more Hip Hop artists have died due to murder than any other genre.

Professor Dianna Theadora Kenny recently shared her findings after examining the deaths of more than 13,000 music artists.

Kenny, who teaches psychology and music at the University of Sydney, recorded the results via The Conversation.

According to Kenny’s article – “Music to die for: how genre affects popular musicians’ life expectancy” – murder accounted for 51% of rapper’s deaths.

“This could be due to these genres’ strong associations with drug-related crime and gang culture,” Kenny says in a recent interview with the Washington Post.

“It’s a cautionary tale to some degree,” she adds. “People who go into Rap music or Hip Hop or punk, they’re in a much more occupational hazard profession compared to war. We don’t lose half our army in a battle.”

The study also shows that rappers are less-likely to die from cancer or heart disease than an artist who performs jazz, blues or folk music.

    1. “People who go into Rap music or Hip Hop or punk, they’re in a MUCH MORE occupational hazard profession compared to WAR. We don’t lose HALF our army in a battle.”

This statement and this study are flawed in that it’s only based on the cause of death for the deceased artists. We don’t lose 50% of our artists to murder!

These other musical genres have been around much longer than hip-hop. For instance, the pioneers of the game are only approaching 60 years old (Kool Herc is 59, Bambaata is 57). They have not had the opportunity yet to die of old age or natural causes. Hence, all the rap/hip-hop artists in the sample pool died young for one reason or another. The blues have been around much longer and many artists have lived until their 80’s or 90’s. Therefore, the study is skewed.

And how did the Professor distinguish between rap artists and hip-hop artists?

      1. Yes. Terrible science at work here. Makes me think it’s some sort of satire. Half the deaths are caused by murder not half of all popular rappers die. The fact she made that mistake discredits her entire study.

    2. The numbers are beyond skewed for this shit. Rap didn’t really get started until the 80’s, it’s such a young genre, of course most of the deaths won’t be from natural causes. Run these numbers again 50 years from now and it’ll be far more balanced.

    3. The high rate of cancer in Fold and Country shows that God hates those 2 genres and shuns them.

    4. So HHDXXX gonna pretend like Skeme didnt say he wroter FANCY/ LEQVE IT for IGGY – the great white hope. I
If this was Nicki or any black female rapper it would be front page news.

    5. Why is this news, hiphop has only been around since 1978, give niggas a chance to die from old age before publishing some bullshit like this.

      1. Exactly man, this is some bullshit. When the oldest heads in hip-hop are only in their 60’s, of course the majority of deaths are going to be unnatural. Like blowing your own brain out or OD’ing on heroin is such a better way to die. Fuck this shit

    7. The theory about the statistics being skewed because rap is a new music form, sound plausible, if it wasn’t for the fact that Electronica artists got a 10 percent chance of death by homicide. Electronic music didn’t become really popular until early 80s.
