“Straight Outta Compton” Not Playing In Its California Namesake

Straight Outta Compton earned $60 million dollars on its opening weekend at the box office, nearly double projections and making it the #1 movie at the box office.

Despite its success, the city of Compton, California cannot screen the film due to having no movie theatre.

CBS Los Angeles spoke to the sociology professor at USC, Manuel Pastor about this shortcoming.

“It’s a low income area, it’s been heavily dis-invested in,” Pastor says. “When you live in a community that doesn’t have that kind of retail, it’s a sign that the community is devalued and people within the community feel devalued.”

Dr.Dre is donating all of the royalties made from his Compton: A Soundtrack By Dr. Dre album to building a performance arts centre in Compton.

      1. Pretty much a made up version of what happened. My sister isn’t even a big hip hop fan like that and she was like where is the D.O.C. and straight up was clowning the part where Dre allegedly got in Suge’s face, like that wouldn’t have ended in an ass whoopin’ or worse.

      1. Very true, despite all the negative attention Its gotten a lot better since the 90’s/Early 2000’s.. been living there all my life and I cant complain

    1. Hate to tell the truth here, but have any of you ever been to a theater near or in the ghetto? Its a horrible experience. We used to have a theater near the ghetto that people from the ghetto would go to. When Rush hour 2 came out it was a disaster. People yelling, acting the fool, two ghetto girls started fighting, and then two ghetto dudes starting fighting and the movie was only 5 minutes in. I’m sorry but ghetto people dont always have the best manners in public, and theaters require people to shut the fuck up, and some people arent capable of that. No smart business man would open a theater in the ghetto, what a pain that would be. Harsh reality.

      1. think thats bad? I was at a drive in mvie with my girl, next thing some crip niggas start wildin out, shooting up the whole place. lucky to be alive.

    2. NWA really weren’t all that great. Not sure what all the hype is about all of a sudden. NWA only released one album in 1988 with the original 5 members. Who cares!

    3. Dre is a damn BILLIONAIRE and Compton can’t have a damn theatre? Talking about giving back to the hood huh Dre? You ol Busta. Yet you dont mind making millions off the movie and the soundtrack do ya? This muthafucka been a sell out.

    4. Folks in Compton know this fantasy Disney shit isn’t for them anyway, lol. How are you going to have a NWA movie without the D.O.C. in it or DJ Train and all the other dudes who were actually instrumental in getting the thing off the ground like the cats who were in the Posse? Hey, but let’s randomly put Pac in the movie even though he has absolutely nothing to do with the NWA story yet leave out one of the biggest things to happen to the group during their time when Dre beat that woman up. SMH.

      1. You’re talking a bunch of nonsense for someone who hasn’t even seen the movie. The DOC was in the movie. And Dre beating up Dee Barnes wasn’t one of the biggest things go happen to the group, this is about NWA, not just Dr Dre. There’s only so much you can put in a 2 1/2 hour long movie.

    5. Well at least he’s building that Performance Arts Center. He should build a movie theatre too, that would’ve been cool for the #SOC movie. The closest theater is in Paramount, Bianchi Theaters.
